GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

It's sad to me since Japanese companies--Konami, Capcom, Nintendo, Square, Enix, Namco, were so formative to my early gaming years.

I still enjoy gaming, but it's just been sad to see the decline in output with the majority of these companies. SNES to PS2 was just an amazing era of output and creativity from Japan.

I am kind of coming to the realization that this will probably be my last console generation or at least consoles will no longer be my primary platform of choice going forward. Kojima leaving Konami just kind of cements it. All of the great Japanese gaming companies I grew up with since the 8 bit days are either dead, focused on mobile now or are shadows of their former selves. I find that 99.9 percent of games Im interested in now are also on PC which I've transitioned too mostly. The only first party stuff I care about from Sony is Naughty Dog properties and I don't really care much for Microsoft's first party IP outside of maybe Halo and it seems like with Windows 10 cross buy owning an Xbox console going forward will be even more pointless since I have a PC. Metal Gear games were console sellers for me but now you can even get MGSV on PC. I cant even get excited about Final Fantssy these days. I'm starting to fail to see the point of owning a console. God help me, I'm probably going to be one of those PC/Nintendo/retro gamers next gen. God speed Kojima.

I wonder if releasing PT was Kojima's way of letting fans play Something rather than nothing. Maybe he already knew at that time that he wouldnt be at konami for long.

Could you pick a worse studio than Nintendo? The least story driven studio with the Kojima. Fucking lol. Can't wait to see what he does next.

I'm not going to get into a debate about who should go to where and who gets who, and I can bet my left ass cheek that Nintendo doesn't care in any case, but I thought it's worth noting that Nintendo seem to be very open to letting devs do what they want, and believe in the creators artistic vision/integrity (Bayonetta 2 for example, Nintendo basically gave Platinum carte blanche, likewise with 101).

I don't think it's been confirmed. It's just that most people believe that it only exists because Kojima wanted it, and thus with him gone it might get canned.
Oh I'm sure it will still happen. But Kojima's involvement in the game was what made that project hopeful.

I mean Guillermo del Toro? Norman Reedus? Without the Kojima factor, that just sounds like putting a Korn song in your crappy new SH in-name-only title.

Could it simply be that Konami is reconsidering their priorities? Is it possible that they would even consider selling the MGS IP and fully moving onto their Pachinko and Healthy living ventures?

Kojima will now come to America to make independent movies with Hayter. He will finally do what he always wanted to do. Get ready Hollywood.

Being pedantic doesn't change my point. I can't think of a pair that is less compatible.

Who's being pedantic?

Nintendo as a whole doesn't make story centric games, but they leave directors to do as they please. I don't think Kojima would ever get everything he could ever want from Nintendo (as in resources), but he would have all the creative freedom he could ever want.

That said, Nintendo would never approach him.

I'm thinking Konami thinks they have a bunch of IP's now and can throw any dev at them to make them work - and probably wanting to focus more on the mobile industry than before.

Is everyone so sure Silent Hills is dead? I mean PT generated a ton of buzz and interest you'd think Konami would want to capitalize on that with or without Hideo.

Nintendo's other hallmark is extremely well designed and polished core gameplay systems with an extremely high level of ingenuity and creativity...which is also a pretty good description of Metal Gear.

With that other director leaving, Konami might be getting out of AAA games altogether. In which case, the Silent Hill game gets the axe.

As far as Kojima leaving and metal gear ending I say FUCKING FANTASTIC NEWS. Now Kojima can actually do something different.

This.

I want to see what else he can create. I love the Metal Gear Saga - but I also love Snatcher and Policenauts. He is more than capable of doing other things [as evidenced by Silent Hills] so lets see what he can create next for a new publisher that maybe even tops the Metal Gear saga.

This is the future only a soothsayer could provide.

No way a proper Rising 2 is happening now either. Even if Konami greenlighted the project, Platinum seem the type who would refuse out of respect for Kojima.

Goddammit. Nothing good comes from this.
I really don't think PlatinumGames could afford to drop a project like that.

Sad to see this happen, loved MGS 1,2,and 4. (Couldn't get into 3, need to try again and never played PW) Kojima is a legendary developer and hope he can finally do a game he wants on his own terms in the future.

I hope he just completely says "fuck off Konami" by partnering with someone or doing a kickstarter for Silent Hills without calling it Silent Hills. (Spiritual Sucessor) since that Teaser was so good. Whatever happens I hope he does what he wants weather its horror, steath, or otherwise.

Being pedantic doesn't change my point. I can't think of a pair that is less compatible.

Look at Takahasi and Monolith Soft, still making story heavy JRPGs since becoming a Nintendo first party.

Not that I'd really want Kojima to be at Nintendo. He should make an independent company like the Clover guys did in becoming Platinum.

Could you pick a worse studio than Nintendo? The least story driven studio with the Kojima. Fucking lol. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Monolith and Intelligent Systems? Not every Nintendo studio is EAD.

Nintendo? What makes you think Kojima fits Nintendo? He would be way better fitting at Sony...

Kojima and his good buddy Sakurai can mope around talking about how they're miserable making the same games from their most famous series. It's the perfect match!

I really couldn't care less about the MGS series, but this I guess means Silent Hills is all but canned. I'd cry about Zone of the Enders, but a new one of those isn't any less likely today than it was yesterday.

Will be fascinating to see where he lands, though.

for god's sake sell Silent Hills to someone who can carry it through if you don't want to do it yourself, Konami. They'd be idiots to burn all the buzz it created
