Konami still makes bank on slot machine sales and maintenance, so there won't be any kind of bankruptcy-related IP fire sale. It'll be interesting to see what Konami does with its video game division. Sit on it? Sell it?

Very curious, very sad situation.

I have always thought Kojima's name was bigger than is actual ability with making games. Konami have obviously been riding that for years, so it will be interesting to see what Kojima does next. Another larger studio or strike out on his own?

So MGSV really is his final MGS ? ...

I'm sad.

Kojima has been making MG games for almost 30 years. He's ending it with what will probably be the best game in the series and one of best games ever made. It had to end someday, it's not all that bad really. I'm honestly better with ending it on a high note, than dragging the dead dog like Activision,Ubisoft and others tend to do.

Still who knows what future might bring, Kojima may be leaving Konami but it doesn't mean he can't ever come back and do another one. Although that's pretty unlikely. Konami also may find someone else to make MG, who knows. Maybe the turn it into a mobile game or something, lol

the 2020 prediction seems far fetched though

Probably left to die after MGSV is over. Kojima and his colleagues will have to resort to licensing UE4 or something if they open a new studio.

He could theoretically license the engine from Konami as well. However since Konami is burning bridges, I doubt that will happen.

Totally agree here. I guess it's just sad to see things end this way for Kojima

Could you pick a worse studio than Nintendo? The least story driven studio with the Kojima. Fucking lol. Can't wait to see what he does next.

So.. you're saying he'd give them something they don't already have?

I now hope it happens. For the Ricky Gervais lulz

Konami are dead without this man. That or they'll suddenly remember all the other franchises they have.

This is easily the best post you have ever made, and I now forgive you for finding the Mega Man series boring

Despite my strong feeling towards Konami and their mishandling of IPs over the years, I can't find myself being angry about this move to finally get out of packaged games. It's what they want, and as much as it kills me to know they've got so many great IPs that they will now lock right up next to Hudson Soft's corpse, I'd rather this way with dropping any pretense about caring about any of it than stringing people along that hey, maybe, just maybe, they'll get back to their former glory as a developer. It sucks that they're doing Kojima wrong like this as a result, but this needed to happen in some way, shape or form.

Assuming Kojima still wants to keep making games, he is going to have zero problems getting something off the ground, and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to bring a big chunk of the senior KojiPro staff along with him. And if he wants to take a break from this whole scene? I can think of very few guys more deserving than him.

Is everyone so sure Silent Hills is dead? I mean PT generated a ton of buzz and interest you'd think Konami would want to capitalize on that with or without Hideo.

The game we were all hoping for is dead and now its going to turn out crappy like all the silent hills of late.

I think that the best outcome is if Kojima makes his own little studio and creates a load of little passion projects. I'm sure he has loads of ideas in his head. People shudder at the idea of mobile, but I can see the man creating a load of immersive and interesting projects no matter the platform, size or budget, but as always, small games doesn't necessarily have to be mobile.

The man is in a very envious position though which a select few could ever dream of. He has got to be loaded after all these years so it is a possibility he could retire and live a happy life. He is also a big name in the gaming industry, one of the big publishers would snap him up very quickly to get a game made from him. Lastly he could go independent by using kickstarter or some shit, he would get serious backing.

I couldn't care less about no more MGS games seeing how MGS2 and MGS4, the two I played were simply awful. But he gave hope for Silent Hill and it seems to be dashed, I won't forget this! :'(

I can only be but so sad about the prospect that Kojima will be able to do something new and laugh as Konami flounders around in an industry they don't understand anymore.

Holy shit. I never thought this would happen. I pretty much thought Kojima was almost running Konami.

And that's exactly why Kojima was ousted. This really is Game of Thrones with Komjima studios playing the role of house Greyjoy and Konami playing the role of Starks, but less likeable.

End of an era but great news for Kojima....what happens to the FOX engine? Will Konami focus more on the true glory that is pachinko now?

Who's being pedantic?

Nintendo as a whole doesn't make story centric games, but they leave directors to do as they please. I don't think Kojima would ever get everything he could ever want from Nintendo (as in resources), but he would have all the creative freedom he could ever want.

That said, Nintendo would never approach him.
He would get the creative freedom he wants anywhere he goes, he's Kojima. That doesn't mean shit. His games on the Wii U unless there's a next gen Wii U 2 would also be a huge waste for him.
You realise that Ninendo has more story driven franchises than MS and Sony combined right?
What heavy story driven games did they release last gen on consoles other than Xenoblade?

Besides MGS and PES games I have no idea what else Konami does. Whatever it is isn't very good.. so this all sounds very odd. Surely Kojima has some control over the MGS franchise, names and characters, or will that be owned by Konami. Can't imagine them making a MGS without his involvement.

Kojima and his good buddy Sakurai can mope around talking about how they're miserable making the same games from their most famous series. It's the perfect match!
So two semi-depressive people not-quite working for Nintendo debating how bad this world is? Intelligent Systems by the way definitely is quite wordy, but they are not trying to make movies, they are still mainly gameplay oriented. I still think, if Kojima was going to work at one of the console vendors, Sony would be the most natural choice and Nintendo would probably be the least fitting of all big publishers. Of course, Nintendo would probably gladly take him and give him a team.

came into the thread purely because of silent hills and find this, one the greatest posts i've ever read on gaf.

for god's sake sell Silent Hills to someone who can carry it through if you don't want to do it yourself, Konami. They'd be idiots to burn all the buzz it created

Yes please, I was really looking forward to this game. Hopefully, either Kojima buys it himself or whoever does hires on Kojipro.

I honestly can't get my head around this, glad we got some more information at least. That 'making of' documentary will be really interesting now..are they gunna speak their minds or will it be censored? I'm scared for the condition of the game now, obviously it's "done" but as Kojima himself said, this is the most important part; testing, editing and fixing.

I want to know this myself ...

Does it even matter? Kojima won't be working on it, Del Toro is friends with Kojima and will most likely not want to have any involvement without the former and all the original Team SIlent members are scattered.

I'd suspect it's dead.
