Your Lie in April (Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso) IOTI Life is Colorful

This is true. I've read the manga up the current chapter, and remarkably little has been cut out. A lot of the cinematography seen in the show actually is based on the manga, which is quite impressive. However the manga suffers just because of its medium; we don't get to actually hear the performances. Otherwise everything else is the same, and it's really impressive that the anime adaption manages to be the definitive version of the show due to the incredible animation, soundtrack and direction.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a top-tier anime adaptation wise.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I'll probably look into it for the artwork alone. Yeah, I'm very impressed by the editing and direction of the show. I'm a huge fan of Beck, and I've waited ages for another musically centered show to come along (no K-On doesn't count dammit and this shits on Kids on the Slope from great heights IMO), and this was just perfect. It eclipses Beck IMO and rock is my favorite genre. Much better pacing to Shigatsu

You guys have convinced me to give this show a watch. Usually I'm more into action/adventure shows but I figure I could stand to broaden my horizon a bit.

I think this show has got very broad appeal. I can imagine showing this to someone who's not familiar with anime or thinks animation is for children and having them come out understanding why us weirdos appreciate this stuff. The themes are universal and the characters are very well realized

"Slice of Life" animes are always a weird watch at first until you get sucked in and then it's GG.

This one is above and beyond in all respects so it grabs you easier but I remember when I was watching Hyouka I was like...errrr...then fast forward I seen it all and it was the bomb.

You could actually show it to someone who hasn't seen an anime before and not feel embarrassed

LOL. I had to drop Hyouka two eps in for that reason. I'll return to it though. The animation in that show is just gorgeous. Based KyoAni

Check out Nodame Cantabile.

Will do. I see there's also an award winning TV drama attached to it. Nice.

oh and please use spoiler tags for the last episode, we don't want to spoil new viewers to the show

if the internet doesn't spoil them first xD

I'm probably just gonna bow outta this thread until I catch up. I started a rewatch last night and I'm up to episode 8. It helped a lot since I wasn't completely paying attention during the first two eps and completely missed the part where
Tsubaki tells Kousei that Kaori wanted to be introduced to Watari and that he should just play the wingman. This lead to me questioning why Kousei was so damned thick the entire time with the whole, "oh woe is me, why would she ever be interested in me? I'm friend A, wah.

to be fair with Kousei, during that time, had a very low self esteem

Well yeah, especially with Watari being the soccer captain/ladykiller he is and all. I like Watari a lot and wish his character was fleshed out more. They did an excellent job with Tsubaki, but aside from
his break down in the toilet stall
Watari is the REAL "friend A" in all of this

Final Episode spoilers below.

God I knew she was going to die but when he was reading the letter at the end I started getting so choked up and it was ridiculous. I like how they were able to perform one last time together, well somewhat, even though he was imagining it. That picture at the end really got me. I'm fucking ruined. So the lie really was the Watari thing, as many in the thread predicted. I wish they used a slower version of Hikaru Nara as the ending theme but I guess they wanted to go for a sadder feeling in the end.

Spring without Kaori...please.

This show was a great ride that I won't forget anytime soon.

I'll likely be ready to join you guys later tonight once I marathon the remaining eps. Wanna go in with a sense of continuity to it all since it'd been a few days since I'd seen Ep 20. When I hit that ep where Kaori says
I won't always be around to help you know, you know.
I felt like the show was gonna conclude with

Kaori dying during the operation (cause like c'mon, maximum shock value and all), and while Kousei and friends are devastated, Kousei musters the strength to deliver that last promised performance as a eulogy to this girl who changed his world. She's still with him in spirit. Montage of flashback clips play as poignant monologue rolls on. The three childhood friends become closer through their shared experiences with Kaori. Feels will be had, etc.

We'll see how it goes though.

I think this episode had the best animation/soundtrack in the series, quite fitting because it was the last episode

dat Kaori flashback ...........

It was the ending we all suspected, and the lie was what we all assumed, but the journey to get there was a good one. I'd have liked to have been held in suspense over her condition a little bit better than we were, but I guess it wouldn't have been the same on a first watch if we didn't know (it would have taken a second where everything would suddenly have been through the lens of "she's dying", instead of that being the lens on the first watch). The letter was a nice touch and the animation during the musical number was fantastic. It's a shame that we didn't get to see them play again, but I guess them playing in his mind is the next best thing.

Holy shit, this episode.
I was destroyed. There is nothing left.

Major kudos to the animators for focusing on Arima's facial expressions to such a degree as they did. When he has that vision during the performance, and then Kaori shows up, you can see everything on his face; there is no dialogue, no need for it. Just... fuck.

That was the most beautiful ending to a show I've ever seen, like I have to gather my thoughts. They absolutely nailed the ending so hard
that was the beautiful metaphorical death scene I've ever seen. Plus that scene where Kousei realizes that she loved him
I think it's awesome that everything makes complete sense now
with why Kousei never noticed her before
I think so much can be said for how amazing the direction of this episode was, truly breathtaking.

It's been a hell of a ride Shigatsu-GAF! Thanks to everyone who posted and are continuing to post in this thread (especially you DarkWing for helping to keep this thread going). It's been fun to watch one of the masterpieces of our time with all of you fine people.

What do I watch now? Well let me recommend a couple series for you:

Silver Spoon
Anohana

Lots of feels to be had here.

Just beautiful. I didn't cry, because it felt much more uplifting than I thought it would.
Kousei is a better person now, and it's because of her. Tsubaki knows her feelings now, and it's because of her. She made them better people, and they will forever remember her and thank her.

Pure beauty.

Oh god don't remind me of anohana right after watching this! I watched that too recently (again) and cried twice.

God. Anime can get just so emotional sometimes

thanks also for introducing this anime to us, I have to agree with you, best beautiful ending to a show, from the animation, to the music, quite a nice surprise to see the acoustic version of
ED1
popping up

I haven't played the piano for several years now and this show has made me come back to it with a greater passion

Hopefully more people will give this series a chance, I've mostly watched action anime but this series has spoiled me because of its beauty

now I will curl up in the corner and cry for a little

The ending didn't disappoint at least, but fuck I just want more. ;_;

Beautiful episode all the way through.

Don't watch AnoHana.

Totally watch AnoHana. Only anime I've ever cried to, and boy did I cry.

That show is the only thing I can remember that really made me tear up, that does not happen often. Fuck me that ending.

I was aware of what was going to happen because I ended up reading the manga. I think the only difference from the anime and the manga was the manga had reactions at the end of Arima's performance.

They did a great job in the animation of Arima's performance. The tears came when he begged Kaori to stay and then the confession at the end of the letter.

I do like there was some closure but I wished there was a time skip to see where Arima's piano career has taken him.

Just read the ending in the manga, this was more or less a full adaption. The anime version was head and shoulders better thanks to the direction and the music, they really nailed this

I still very much dislike tsubaki.

Other than that, I liked the ending though them
killing off kaori before they could meet once more after the performance was painful :(

that was the saddest part I think, although
the letter was uplifting but in a bittersweet kind of way

Silver Spoon would be good for an immediate watch after this show. Anohana will have you crying like right after every episode.

This has definitely become one of my favorite series this season. There were several times throughout the series when I ended up crying (mostly midway through it),
but the ending wasn't one of those times, mostly because of how telegraphed it ended up being
.

As others have said, it felt like Watari could've been given a bit more time in the limelight to flesh his character out, since his lack of importance later on
makes it kind of obvious that Kaori's thing with him didn't matter that much in the context of the series, after all
.

During the final episode I was torn between two theories:
either Kaori would live, as a kind of blunt metaphor that he had finally gotten over his previous issues, or she would pass away, giving Kousei a chance to show all his character development by not crashing and burning after losing her. The second option felt way more in line with the series, so I wasn't all that surprised when that imagine spot of them playing together showed up.

I've got to say that the black cat scenes were kind of funny for me, having recently finished reading the Umineko VNs, though.

Amazing, beautiful or however you would like to call it. It really was a very emotional ending, nothing less was expected by me, because every episode was emotional.

What a great anime, I was close but didn't shed a tear (Side note Anohana made me cry like a baby).

So he ends up with his childhood friend?

Called it!
She dies during surgery. Check. She saw Kousei perform when he was still playing the piano. Check. That was the reason she chose the violin instead of the piano. Check.
You have to admit mdubs, that was a pretty
sad
ending. Not completely without
hope
and
well done
but still
sad
. This was my first anime of this type and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

But it wasn't like a despair sort of sad, which is more what I was getting at. Very bittersweet but in the most beautiful and amazing sort of way.

Good ending. I didnt absolutely love it but I thought it wrapped up nicely.
I didnt really get emotional because we saw this coming from a mile away. I guess when you have 10 weeks to prepare for it, it doesnt hit you as hard. Felt bad for Kousei but I'm glad he didnt revert into being such a lonely punk, but instead transforming into more of a ladies man.

I love how the scene in the soundtrack cover made it in the anime. The fact that it was like 5 minutes of uninterrupted music made that scene even better.

Soundtrack was absolutely on point. Overall a good series that could have been better. I'll miss this show for sure.

So uh does this mean Kousei x Tsubaki is official? Is this the first time the childhood friend actually..won?

What a great anime, I was close but didn't shed a tear (Side note Anohana made me cry like a baby).

I thought I would be able to get through this without crying and I was doing so well. But on that last episode when that goddamn ending song came in during the final scene, I burst into tears and ugly cried. Damn you Anohana.
