Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

Hi guys,

quick question, I'm on Erasmus atm and I only brought my Macbook Air Mid 2012.

You think I could play the game on this machine? Anyone has any experience with it?

Would you guys mind deleting those quotes from your posts on the last page (or a moderator), I've been asked to remove that information.

(apologies to the other press guys in here too, bad form on my part)

I'll do it this once, but please be responsible for what you post in future. In general, once something is posted in public on the internet, it's not our responsibility to protect it. But the launch is just coming up and I don't want to see anyone get into trouble over minor stuff like that.

Oh lord, that Dragon was such a pain in the arse to kill.

Good times..

The best item description in the Infinity Engine games was written by Josh Sawyer for Icewind Dale. It was for a super-powerful paladin longsword called Pale Justice.

Here's the description:

This sword was made with one purpose: to destroy evil. Though a powerful weapon, Pale Justice has humble beginnings. The plain sword was crafted by a devout worshipper of Tyr named Renold. Renold spent thirty years of his life perfecting the metalworking techniques that allowed him to craft an almost flawless blade. As soon as Renold had completed the unadorned weapon, he turned it over to the church of Tyr. The priest who received it placed the naked blade on his monastery's altar. He asked his brothers to join him in praying to Tyr to ask their god to bless the weapon with holy power. The brothers never touched the blade, nor did they speak of it. After ten years, despite the fact that all of the other brothers lost faith in the blade ever becoming enchanted, the original priest, Edan, continued his prayers in silence. Another twenty years passed, and there was still no sign from Tyr. Visiting priests of Helm scoffed at Edan's blind devotion to the blade. It was then that, without warning, Edan walked up to the altar and gently removed the dust-covered blade from the altar.

The priest of Helm asked Edan if he had finally come to his senses. Edan replied that he had, that he had been expecting the wrong thing from Tyr the entire time. He stated that Tyr had done his work long ago.

The priest of Helm laughed out loud at Edan's claim and asked his bodyguard to draw his sword. The magnificent weapon in the hand of the Helmite had a gilded guard set with pearls. Runes were etched along the blade, with a small cluster of fine rubies set in the ricasso. The priest of Helm laughed again and spoke. "This is truly a sword blessed by the gods. Your weapon looks like an ordinary soldier's blade. It pales in comparison."

Edan calmly grabbed the blade by the tang and swatted at the guard's weapon. The priest of Helm's laughter cut off quickly as he stared down at his retainer's broken weapon. He stood there speechless as Edan set the blade down and began to reply.

"Justice always pales in comparison to vanity and ostentatious displays of power. I expected Tyr to manifest his divine will in this blade with lightning and fire. I should have remembered how the blade was given to me... with simple charity and humility. Justice is the right of every man, no matter how rich or poor, no matter how educated or ignorant. It should be found as often in the fields of farmers as it is in the fields of battle."

Edan took the blade to a local weapon smith and had him put a wooden, leather wrapped grip on it. He then gave it to a fledgling paladin and asked him to always remember the potential for charity and kindness in the human race.

The best part?
You find the blade on a corpse in a well-hidden room, but it uses the graphic for a totally normal, non-magical longsword. The only way you'll know it's this insanely powerful magical item is if you bother mousing over the item and reading the tooltip.

Needless to say, I'm excited for what Sawyer has come up with for PoE.

That is so damn good. I expect a lot of love like that in PoE.

This is awesome and yet another reason why I'm insanely excited for this game.

You can actually cheese it with the cloudkill wand or the trigger doom + chromatic orb or lower resistance then spamming magic.

or by being an idiot and casting chromatic orb without any debuffs with Neera (EE wild mage)

First try, my last run; Wild Surge: No Save

From Obsidian FB page:

"Pillars of Eternity: The Wailing Banshee Inn

It was the largest battle of the War of Defiance, and the imperial army of Aedyr had blockaded the rebel capital of Defiance Bay with its fleet. They chose to invade with ground troops at the weakest point, a poorly fortified position in a district known as Ondra's Gift, which had once been a wetland before being drained and settled.

What the invaders didn't know was that they were being drawn into a trap. Aedyran soldiers stormed the district to find it abandoned, and before they could make sense of it, the dikes behind them were destroyed, and the district was flooded. The army of Aedyr was decimated.

Most of the original district was swept away in the flood, or remains beneath the water, a submerged ruin. One of the only surviving structures was a lighthouse, which now lies at the far end of the farthest dock of Ondra's Gift - and the locals prefer it that way. Those unaware of the local superstitions who pass that way find that their blood runs cold as they near it, and their bodies are overcome with panic. But often they remain paralyzed just long enough to hear the screams from within, and it's the screams that stay with them, haunting their dreams, spawning a host of wild stories - some about vengeful soldier ghosts, some about a lighthouse keeper who never knew to evacuate.

The key to the lighthouse has passed from one naïve would-be owner to the next, often through trickery. The last such victim was a young woman named Niah who had aspirations of converting the lighthouse into an inn that ended as quickly as her workers could flee. Though she still has hopes for it, she has yet to conjure the nerve to set foot inside."

So good. I love world building so much.

That's one of the biggest reasons I'm excited for PoE. Like JES I'm a pretty big history buff and since PoE is a totally new world unlike Forgotten Realms, they get make everything up from scratch and have the opportunity to develop such cool little bits and pieces or lore and history. And as the first game it's probably full of this kind of stuff to really solidify the game's universe and identity.

If this thread is starting to garner new interest I'm tempted to use my backer status to grab a few cheap copies for people if they wish.

Is this game like Divinity Original Sin in terms of difficulty?
you mean really difficult until you get a hold of all the mechanics, then get enough XP from sidequests to be overleveled and stomp all later encounters?
Just finished it yesterday, I love that game but without a friend its not as fun. I think the early level monster layout could be thought through better, theres much more potential for low level monsters than just "Rawr undead"

I hope it does. I really want this to sell well for them, not only because it looks like they put 200% into it but because they deserve it.

I'd hate to not see a PoE 2 after the expansion because sales were less than stellar.

As much as I love D:OS, I agree.

It's one of the reasons my co-op buddy and I are waiting for the new hard mode patch that's sometime this year before going through again.

D:OS became a very un-fun game quickly. It was fun first 10-15 hours, then I realized the combat system is unbalanced and untuned. 75% of the skills are terrible and not interesting. Also, the combat is slow. I hate slow turn-based combat, especially waiting on my buddy to make his turn and he takes forever. Also, the story is non-existent. I go could go on, it has potential and I'll revisit when they release their "remastered" version with Hard Mode or whatever their cooking up. Also their version of "companions" is a total joke.

Also, they released their modding kit but 0 mods on Steam Workshop. Or from what I've seen, none that are impressive.

Nvm just read your thing over again.
Edit: Also agreed on the companions being a total joke. I got to the last mission of
Madora's
storyline, ended up looking it up and found out
theres no way from stopping her kill the very sweet but sad mentally disabled orc.
I ended up just not completing
her
storyline. And
Jahan's
story line is a fucking joke where the hell did being a
1000 year old King come from?
Like all that was hinted was that
he was a mysoginistic daemonophobic cat loving wizard.

The story is there and there's tons of skills. How is it unbalanced or untuned? It's tuned very well when the fights are not gear dependent.

I will agree on the slow combat thing. It's fine for the first few hours but when you summon the damn spider for the 1000th time and it takes seconds for the bastard to spin down, those seconds add up. I'd guess 1/3 of my 65 hours play time was waiting on combat animations. Should have added an option to skip animations or make them faster or something. Other than that, I loved D:OS from start to finish. Could have used more (and better) companions though.

That is gorgeous, is this from a forum community?

One last complaint about D:OS, Hiberheim overall was buggy as fuck. Me and my partner were actually celebratory when we got out of that area.
It might of not been helped by the fact I tried to kill my partner several times, to see if death purges the rot.

Banshee looks good. The gaf inn is just so bland compared to the other two.

Yea, the Goose and the Fox (GaF) inn is a bit "uninspiring" from the sneak peek we got to see from Josh Sawyer's YouTube playthrough in January. Hopefully they snazzed it up.

The "Celestial Sapling" is looking to be my favorite inn.

An inn built into a tree!

Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.

I wish we could see them all somewhere online. Drawing up character concepts to fit them helps me pass the time.

Someone made a video of the current portraits in Backer Beta v. 480. Not the best way to view them but oh well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgXB1YDxTC4

Also, here's a sneak peek at new portraits being touched up by Kaz.
https://instagram.com/p/0IwsuZpxx2/

Important to note that there will be more portraits not shown here for release. There will be a lot :). And most likely more in upcoming patches.

That looks great. I can't wait! I know it's just a couple of days away, but still... I can be a little... impatient, sometimes :P

Excellent.

Sorry, I updated my previous post with the link to YouTube video showing the current portrait selection in the Backer Beta.

Actually, here are the newly added portraits specifically for BB. 480.

For those choosing the Steam version, good news from Kaz!

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71420-steam-achievements/?p=1590869

Kaz: Our resident programmer Roby pushed to get all the steam related assets done before release. We support the following:

  • Achievements
  • Badges
  • Cards
  • Emoticons (be sure to collect both "eyes")
  • Profile Background

Also, important message from Brandon Adler concerning the embargo/streaming:

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71...rch-23rd-backers-wait-for-the-26th/?p=1590662

Brandon Adler: Since many are asking:

  • The embargo for streaming the game is up on March 23rd. I don't remember the specific time, but I think it is 6 AM PDT.
  • The embargo for reviews and critiques is up when the game launches. This is so all press have a chance to write up and release their reviews at the same time.
  • The press are getting press versions of the game. These are not final versions, but they are pretty close. Whether or not you feel that press reviews and Twitch/YouTube streams are important, they are. They will make an enormous difference in the reception of the game. We are hoping that official press and good word of mouth from our backers will create the best launch we could possibly have. This will ensure that we are able to make sequels and more expansions for everyone.
  • I understand that some of the backers may be upset that others get to review the game before you get to play, but it is necessary if we want day one reviews to be live. If we opened up the review build to backers the majority of the game would be leaked before launch day and the press would (rightfully) break their embargos so that their reviews are relevant.
  • Also, the backers are going to be getting a day one patch that has many additional fixes that the review build isn't getting. The biggest change is to the Enchanting UI. Trust me when I say you will want some of these fixes/changes for your full playthrough.

One again, I apologize to any backers that feel slighted. That is not our intention. Our intention is to have the best launch possible. We (Obsidian and backers) have spent over two years on this journey together and we can't thank you enough. We just ask that you understand what we are doing is for maximum exposure and the good of the game.

Thanks.

Well, I plunked down my $90 for the Royal Edition on GOG.

Game just continues to look better and better with each new screenshot. My only concern is the soundtrack, which I hope is good. I want more Divine Divinity than generic "epic" fantasy music.

http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Pillars_of_Eternity_Wiki is as good anything else. There are also some old, relatively, Youtube vids that cover most stuff that's in the Backer Beta Lore wise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU4QBBTLo0I

I made a video a couple of weeks ago trying to learn more about the geography and setting of the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2SghKgVlFE

As for the story, that's been kept under super-tight wraps by Obsidian :).

Take a look if you want. My mic is terrible though. I forgot to disable the noise-cancelling option in my sound options since I'm very new to recording videos, so you may have to turn the volume down a bit if you wan't to get rid of my computer's noisy fan.

I think that is very reasonable point of view and course of action for them to take regarding early copies, review copies and backer copies. That said I'm somewhat surprised they aren't concerned about more dedicated streamers and uTubers spoiling most if not whole game before Thursday.

I believe Brandon Adler said you can only stream the first few hours or the first act. Sensuki will be creating non-spoiler videos for us as well!

I will say this, if you are sensitive to spoilers you should not be watching any streams before launch. There is no getting around the fact that the game and story will be spoiled if you watch these streams. Just fair warning."

Fair enough of a reason. I'd hope that no streamer / youtuber will be stupid enough to do what they're not supposed to do and leak things.

I wonder if the Gaf Inn backstory is anywhere near as elaborate. All I know is that the inn keeper is
Bishop and he's wielding a banhammer
. Visually it's not very interesting
Trust me when I say you will want some of these fixes/changes for your full playthrough.

ah, it's a Obsidian game alright

Just watch Sensuki's videos on his YouTube channel tomorrow, link below. He will be making quality non-spoiler videos like on how to play the game and such so as to get as many people interested and comfortable with the game systems before launch.
