How do you get this game for free?
A friend gave it to me - and I'm going to compensate for his good deeds as soon as I get this months' money :)
don't even ask. Trust me. It will just start thread crapping.
I thought that I'd just answer this so false/inaccurate replies start showing up.

I reached the first checkpoint and I feel the credits should have rolled at this point for me.

I cannot do shit!
The patrols destroy me. Then the crows. Then that huge enemy with the brick. Then the dogs.
WTF! I have only played Demon's Souls and finished it with not that much trouble.

Should I try with another weapon? I chose the whip thingy.

The game is incredible though!

Only played for an hour and the game's pretty cool so far. I find myself stopping and staring at all the nice 3d models and textures in game lol. The chromatic aberration bothers my eyes and the stuttering is really noticeable though. : [

I feel naked without my shield :( I spent every souls game hiding(didnt even touch DW in DkS2) and now every fight is a tense standoff lol. Dude with the big axe shortly into the game wrecked me for 20min and now I've spent an hour dying on cleric. Loving it.

Another thing I've noticed is that every NPC can kill you in seconds. Aww look at that maimed crow, should be easy pickings. A split second later and I've lost almost half hp from some peck attack.

You can only summon people if you have the Bell and have insight, yes? Well then how do you earn more insight? One of the reasons I got this was just for co-op. Hope it's not too hard to keep getting it for co-op =/

Where is the saw spear?
Near the sewers, in that tower-like building filled with beasts and wooden planks. In the top part there will be a window behind a bunch of barrels, right near the L shaped staircase with a beast in it, go down it and you'll see some corpses hanging with glowing items in them, cut their chains then go down to grab the items. One of them is the saw spear.

Haven't really played a souls game, and had no idea I could lose all of my blood echoes permanently by not recovering them. Lost 13k points. I haven't beaten the first boss yet, should I just start over? At least now I know I should be frequently buying things.
LOL everytime you die, you're starting over.

How do I get the messenger vendor to sell the other weapons? I upgraded the cane and leveled up my skill, but I still feel like I am fighting with a tooth pick. The moveset is nice, but I want something with more bite.

So tempted to pick this up but I hated Dark Souls.

The extremely vague storytelling and the "Here's the world. Figure shit out, motherfucker." style didn't click with me.
Save your money then. There are now arrows or NPCs telling what you what to do.

Who's TeamCane here? I just found the saw spear and the moveset seems more practical, but the cane is way more fun to screw around with.

Should I keep levelling skill? I'm al like 16 and only have the cane to +1. I'm at the
father whatshisname
fight.

My cane is +5 now have not been using anything else 6 bosses down , it just ploughs through them. Keep in mind that i am speccing for skill.

Oh hell. I was farming in there and cut the corpses down, but did not drop to the bottom because I want to clear the Cleric Beast before venturing out much further. Looks like I am going to go back.

I've been farming for blood vials in preparation for the second boss fight. Been focusing on leveling Vit and Endurance though I had to level my strength up twice to use Kirkhammer.

Is
father G
the first boss? If so, any tips because this is crazy.

He’s sort of the second boss. The boss you should try first is on a bridge past two werewolves (which are harder to fight past than the boss itself, in my opinion).

I recommend encountering the first boss because then you can start to level up through the doll, I think (not sure if she comes alive if you go to the second boss first).

Be very patient and try not to rush things. Try to engage the enemy one on one. Throw pebbles to aggro a single enemy, watch its attack animations to learn its patterns, and attack when you have an opening. Repeat until the pack is dead. Parry with your gun: right before an enemy attack hits, you can shoot them, which causes them to be stunned for a couple of moments. During this time, go up to them and press R1 for a very strong attack. Remember, the circle button lets you do a quick dodge when you're locked onto an enemy, and roll when you are unlocked. Stick and move, and be aware of your environment so you don't get trapped against a wall or corner. Don't be afraid to use your consumables; many enemies are weak to fire, use molotov cocktails.

I think most people run into a different boss first, but unlike that boss the one you ran into you are required to beat. You can try a few things:

1. Oil + Molotov
2. Use the natural cover in the arena to your advantage a lot
3. Parry, parry, parry - especially in the third phase as he will never stop attacking you.
4. Use a certain item
from a sidequest involved with that boss.

Definitely. When the game was street date'd, people were complaining that the caine was weak - while starting as a Violent Past and speccing STR.

There aren't multiple save files in this game, are there?

I have no idea... wondered that myself. I created a new character thinking it would just save my old one like previous souls games and allow me to select between them upon hitting Continue, but instead it just loaded directly into my most recent character. It never mentioned that my old data would be overwritten or anything.

Early on snuck past the big guy thumping at the door and I thought I was being very clever, but then after dispatching the guys on the nearby stairs after, out of nowhere I get killed by a giant dude. I guess I triggered some event for him to always notice me or maybe I was being loud or something.

Continue loads your most recent save

To pick other characters there's a Load Game option

Final call, pistol or buss?

How is it possible that no one has discovered that "secret" mechanic yet. I want details!

For instance: What is
frenzy and how does it work?

Crap - end of page.

Oh my heart! Managed to beat the end boss of my first Chalice Dungeon on my first try with 20 HP left and 0 blood vials. It was the
fire watchdog,

Damn, I thought all of these gemstones that were dropping were the same but some have different properties. + Thrust ATK, + Phys ATK, + HP recovery, with different values. Have two on my axe now and one on my pistol that ups Blood ATK 1.8%. I like this system a lot so far.

Preparing for boss #3, don't know what's in store...backed out the first time I found the boss area.

People around 3 bosses in, or around Old Yharnam, what level are you? I'm 20.

Okay, I can't decide. Which of these three should I pick for my hunter. (The eyes look weird on all three and I can't fix them. Better to keep the goggles on.)

I posted this last night, but didn't see any responses:

I killed the werewolf with my bare hands at the the start of the game and then made it all the way to the hunter's dream without dying. I didn't notice anything special except maybe a few bloodvials and some extra molotovs? Anybody else know anything about this?

wasn't able to use my beckoning bell the use option is greyed out, was really hoping to play some coop with a friend too :/

VaatiVidya just said it's not worth it - apparently you only get a few extra blood vials. It's better to just avoid him completely.
