Never played a Souls game before this. I went in blind basically and I played for about 4 hours last night. I got my shit wrecked hard. I made zero progress for about 2 hours since I couldn't level up yet. I finally checked a thread online and saw what was required to allow me to start levelling up and BOOM, I'm in business. My next run I made a mad dash to the first boss, just ran from every enemy, fought the boss, got stomped, but thats ok because now I can level up! Did a couple more quick runs just to get some Blood Echoes and raise a stat or 2 then I had to get in bed. While I was in bed I watched Epic Name Bro's first part of his playthrough video (It covered only areas I'd already seen, I wouldn't have watched it if it got into things that were spoilers for me). Having watched his video I now feel like I have a better handle on things, parrying, comboing, dodging and just the overall flow of combat. Now I'm stuck at work and can't wait to go play again and utilize some of my new knowledge. It's been a long long time since I've been this pumped up about a game, I could barely get to sleep last night, my body was still just tense like a live wire.

You pretty much described the first time I played demon's souls, it only gets better from this point on.

I'm really liking how many people who are new to souls have picked the game up and are enjoying it. Seems like the game might reach some of the higher sales expectations people had, which means only good things for From and the future of the series.

So, how do you get that second encounter with Eileen the crow? The one where she's at the Old Tomb. The wiki says you need a Guard Emblem to open a gate, cant find any info about that guard emblem.

Not sure if we're still using spoiler tags or not so...

Easiest spot to farm Twin Bloodstone Shards that I've found is right outside the Cathedral lantern.
Just run straight out of the exit from the lantern, make a right and kill the enemy that's there, and then keep going right until you reach the corner. There's a pretty hard hitting hobo/witch type enemy, but it drops TBS regularly, and occasionally the common version.

Hmmm I'll add this to my Blood Vial farming run. Ludwig +4 here we come :D

Gascoigne's armor has the highest poison resist, and I was wearing that because of the poison enemies in Old Yarnam. That probably helped a little. I did use an antidote during the fight though. I just dodged under his right arm (your left) and only attacked him when it was safe. The right arm single-claw swipe is the best. The one where he goes flying is impossible to counter-hit him from. The one where he stands up and swipes 4-5 times just follow his back until he calms down and hit him twice then dodge out and get ready again. That's what I did and it worked.
thanks, I'll definitely try it tonight. Keeping my distance has lead to me getting destroyed

Mine just arrived from a UK retailer. Two days early. Reversible cover artwork FTW. Can't wait until home time now! :D

Is it B? lol even better. I upgraded my skill to 20 (started with the class with highest skill rating) right off the bat and sunk some shards into the upgrades... cane is awesome. :)

I like how they put the scale-bonus emphasis on trust attack too. So you have some reason to use it as a thrust weapons, instead of just going God of War all the time.

I'm preeeeeeeetty sure it's only a C scale. I'm working off memory from last night but my cane is +3 and I think it read C for skill.

There were strange symbols tied to it though.

Under special abilities...

There was what looked like a snake on a yellow field with 100 next to it.
There was what looked like a wolf's head on a yellow field with 100 next to it.

Not sure what those mean. Extra damage against snakes and wolves? Reptiles and beasts?

#rampantspeculation

It is, without a doubt, the classiest starting weapon at least. We're not beasts, after all.

Agreed. I use it to give any miscreants and malefactors a good duffing! It's the gentleman's option.

I'm a souls virgin and have a quick question regarding leveling up in Bloodborne. I played for a couple hours yesterday and managed to find where the first and second boss are (not beating them though haha). After finding them,
the doll lady came to life
and now I can level up but...I haven't beaten a boss yet so i don't have any points to level up. My friend said that is normal, and you can only level up after beating a boss.

Now, my question is, if I run through a level and get those level up echo things and then backtrack all the way back to the teleporter thing, will I be able to level up in the hub world? Or do you really need to kill a boss to level anything up?

I'm fighting my second chalice boss (a trio) and ran out of health items on the last one who just shoots and swings a lantern. Since he doesn't approach me I'm using my glorious 1hp/second regeneration from my blood gem to bolster me back up and wreck this fucker :D

Beat Cleric Beast on my first try
pretty straight forward souls boss, just get behind him keep rotating so you keep him spinning
Father Gascoigne has kicked my ass a few times though. Got him to about 15% twice
before he turned on my first try, I was thinking this is simple... Then got demolished, keep missing my gun shots on headstones which really sucks when you are trying to stun him in mid strike

Really like it so far, not sure who said this was the easiest of the souls games because I definitely do not believe it is. I have a few friends that are buying this and it will be their first souls game. I am worried for them...

My friend had a great experience last night. Fighting father for like 15+ tries yelling. He finally beats him and is yelling saying he's never been more happy and angry at the same time.

Yeah it's B just checked. (just second upgrade too)

And I'm trying to avoid all spoilers and all advice online... but those two symbols have me curious. Nothing in the game tells you. So... I might have to check online to see what they mean. Since it will be hard for me to test it myself.

edit: lol I typed c for some reason. haha

You can farm some blood echos off normal enemies and use them to level up. You only have to attempt a boss to bring the doll to life to open the level up ability.

It's dominating the gaming side of GAF at least

lol

I got the Kirkhammer and I love that it's got the tried-and-true Souls longsword moveset. I also like great maces in souls games so I figured it'd be the perfect weapon for me...but the hammer form does terrible damage! What am I doing wrong here? The sword mode hits much harder on most enemies. The only thing the hammer has been any good for is smooshing those crows. I've noticed that the fully charged R2 slam sometimes does over 250 damage but sometimes does less. Are some enemies resistant to blunt damage, or what?

I also feel like I'm shaky on the fundamentals of gun counterattacks. I find they work amazingly well on certain attacks - like when the big guys charge at you. But other times they're unreliable. Do I want to counter early or late in the animation? Does the starter pistol just have a crappy window for parrying in exchange for better range, or is my timing off? Is the repeater better for this?

Also, getting ripostes off on the first boss was really inconsistent and frustrating too but I felt obligated to try. It seemed like I could always get him once early on but afterwards no dice.

It's B rating after +2. - http://bloodborne.wiki.fextralife.com/Threaded+Cane
Gonna try to get this to +5 tonight. VA is giving me a hard time ;_;

You can level without killing a boss. Just get farm some blood echoes and go back to the hunters dream.

Btw... screw the axe. I started another game as a strength build to try the axe and I don't see this buff in damage you guys are talking about.

Threaded cane scales (C) with dex after two upgrades and gives you the choice of thrust attacks and complete crowd control... it's awesome. Also has two nasty transformation attacks.

Yeah, I gave up on the axe.
Interested in the pimp cane but for now it's #TeamBladeSaw

Got the
Ludwig's Holy Blade
yesterday. Nice damage upgrade compared to my starting Cane.

Any idea why the
sword
appeared in the
Hunter's Dream's vendor
?

Got to start my playthrough last night and I am loving it. The hunter's axe is one of my favorite weapons in all of souls history. This has also been my first experiment with streaming and video recording and I was really impressed by how easy the ps4 made it. I don't have the setup for the best quality and audio mixing but I'm not looking to become a real streamer or LPer. I'm mostly just fascinated by the idea of archiving my playthroughs to look back on years from now.

Highlights from last night are:
Best Death: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zcla6PLSPbM#t=510
One shotting the first boss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zcla6PLSPbM#t=2726

Pretty sure it is related to the
Radiant Sword Hunter Badge

I felt like I bumbled through the second fight a little bit
Father What's-his-face
. I made it a bit more difficult for myself than necessary, and I'm still learning the timing for countering with the pistol I'm using.

Man, get rid of the frame stutter, and this is GOAT.

Fucking love it.

The Bad:

Here is where I may say a few things against popular opinion. Why on Earth any developer / designer thinks it is appropriate to put a save point (the first one in the game, no less) right before a part of the game where you have to fight no less than probably 20 enemies is a good idea is beyond me. This creates nothing at all but frustration. I spent 15 minutes working my way through that mob of enemies in the area surrounding the gigantic bonfire 3-4 times only because I would get stuck on some debris, stuck between a horse carriage, etc. and killed. The fact that these enemies have patrols (and are slow as F) makes it take even longer.

I've seen a few people annoyed about this - but I literally only had to deal with the mob once and had no trouble with it. One or two of the mobile mob are stragglers and you can pick them off without alerting the others. If you go up the stairs on the right side before the large bonfire you can bypass the fire and lure a few of that mob up the stairs one at a time. Finally, at the far end of the right side upper level is a place to drop down behind the bonfire - there you can lure the remainder to attack you at most two at a time. I cleared the whole area without dying once. It required a slightly different strategy than usual but I felt like it's easily doable if you don't aggro them all at once, especially since they're all weaker enemies.

My first "souls" game. Didn't expect to buy it but all of the positive chatter it had been creating made me go to Toys R Us and grab a copy.

I subsequently died. Many times. With many games I think that would make me enjoy it less. However, I find with Bloodborne, I'm at work now thinking about how I can get good enough to succeed. It's a cool feeling.

For the people who don't wanna fight the giant mob in the beginning of the game again after a death, you can run past most of them by sticking to the right side of the map.

Dark Souls still has the best beginning of the Souls games, but enjoyed the first couple hours of Bloodborne last night. One death so far! I've always liked to build more agile, dodge-centric characters in the Souls games so I've felt comfortable and confident so far. I'm sure there will be many roadblocks before it's all over.

Yes!

I just want to high five all the new-to-souls gaffers playing Bloodborne and having experiences like this. You're in for such a treat!

FINALLY! I beat the fucking 3rd boss. What a pain :O

Okay, so, earlier someone said to buy that 10,000 blood key. I have. Now where does it go lol? I went through
the newly opened area with the tower that at the very bottom has a beast to fight, and ended up opening a shortcut, but I think that's actually where I'm supposed to go
.

So I created a character last night and made a female lone survivor with the threaded cane and blunderbuss.

My first run: I died in the angry mob. I didn't bait enemies enough and got overrun.

My second run: I reached the first boss, got his health down to less than a quarter left and died.

After that, I spent an hour grinding so I could level up a couple of times and upgrade my cane since that cane is pretty weak against the Cleric Beast. After 5 or 6 runs through that area, I finally realized there was a shortcut to the boss...

My third run: Reached the Cleric Beast, stayed under his legs and hit him in the ass. Rinse and repeat until he died. No problem.

Hopefully I can muster up some time tonight to continue on.

Not sure if this has been covered in the OT, but does anyone know if pressing the Share button "pauses" the game. I know you can't truly "pause" any Souls game, but it'd be convenient if Share suspended the game.
