So, all Bloodborne players who haven't played Souls before, how's it going?

I killed the first boss barely...and on the way there I discovered the two hand Axe as a way to kill bigger enemies.

Liking this game a lot more than I thought.

Loving it now that I've gotten the rhythm of evading and moving back in to strike. I somehow initially got the impression that going free camera in fights was ideal, but sticking and moving with hop steps >>>

So I beat my first boss and found the second, just grinding now but can anyone answer me this?
There is a gate that is right beside the fountain right after you escape the hospital and fight your first enemy. Where do you go to open it? I've been looking all over for this new area.

Haha if I ever get past this first area. Even with all the advice I feel like I'm slamming my head against a wall. But it's gotta click at some point

It will. The game is actually really good about giving you the information you need. Just not when you think you need it, or not when you want it right away. You just need to have the mindset of "Oh well, I guess I'll just keep playing" whenever you're stuck. With that mindset you'll find secrets and shortcuts and just get better at the game overall. Things that confused you at first will be revealed to you. Like with leveling. Just keep playing and you'll know when you can level up.

I do think a valid criticism, and one that I hope From takes to heart for future games, is that the beginning area should be just a BIT easier so new people who otherwise might get sucked in don't get immediately turned off or feel like they're out of their depth.

You'll open it from the inside later on in the game, the area isn't important right now.

Thanks for this thread OP. I'm planning on going through the series backwards (omitting DS 2), since it seems like Bloodborne is the least janky and obtuse, followed by Dark Souls, then Demon's Souls. It's good to hear impressions from other Souls virgins before I jump in.

Reading the manual is the tutorial.

Does the physical copy comes with a paper manual? I miss those.

Thanks everyone for the help! Guess I was really close to the first boss! I ended up beating it on the first try although I used a ton of blood vials. Now that the leveling is opened up I feel like it is a completely different game (in a good way). I have already made a couple runs through town to get more blood echos for leveling. Also ran into the second boss and promptly got my ass whooped! haha Going to do some power leveling and give it another go. This game continues to get better and the difficulty is refreshing. Really need to stay on your toes at all times.

I don't understand this game really, like the first boss, I assumed you had to try and memorize his attacks and evade then counter-attack after all of them, turns out all I had to do was get behind his big ass knees and whack away with no fear. Combat can feel rewarding when it's you vs one of the large enemies and you counter/parry with the gun and take them down or just take your time again, memorizing their tells for their attacks and countering, but downright frustrating if there's more then 1 enemy on the screen and you can't block and you get chain hit to death. It just seems like you're fighting more against the system and style of play then the enemies themselves.

On the PS4 menu go to Bloodborne and go to Overview, then you'll see the manual

Stumbled upon second boss by accident when I haven't even cleared the first one.

By the way...I heard there's a 30 second route that you can take to go from the Central Lamp to the C. Beast boss?

I have been taking the long way through..can anyone point out to me about how do I go about taking this shortcut? (I already unlocked the gate shortcut back to the central lamp).

On the bridge to C Beast, half way down to the left there's a house. Downstairs, to the left, you can open a door. Going outside and following the path up takes you to the gate (that you've opened). Then on respawn you just run through the gate, through the house, and you're on the bridge. Skips the werewolves, thankfully!

I never realized that the wheelchair guy's house had a second level. D'oh.

Beat the boss in one try, thanks to probably a bit of overleveling+molotov cocktails...Mmm...this can get addicting...

Well I played for a few hours last night when I found some time and I can't get past the first street that has like 20 dudes on it. So it's going poorly to say the least
Try singling them out one at a time. I never played a souls game either. Use a pebble tho get ones attention and kill him. I got the game Saturday and honestly up until Monday I couldn't really get past that street either. But once I did and started farming and levelling up its all working out. Just beat the third boss and it feels great kneeling I over came it. Trust me, stick with it, great game.

I beat the first boss on my first try! Used 9 potions though. I ground out some echoes beforehand and bought the armor and also upgraded my weapon.

Now I'm just going and figuring out where to go next. Still a decent number of places I know I hadn't gone to that were already available.

I have to admit it really is hard. First couple of days with the game for me were so frustrating as I could not get past the first street with the mob on it. I got game Saturday so I had a few day head start. Now that I've levelled up a bit and am getting better at dodging and watching for enemy patterns I love it, so addicting, and I just beat the third boss. Anyone having trouble, really try and stick with it. I really am loving this game. It really is a very challenging Game that can get extremely frustrating at times, but such a sense of accomplishment once u get past it.

Yesterday you helped me guys so help me again. :)
For my stupid mistake I sold gear for 1k blood and it disappeared from the store in dream world. Is there any chance it pop up again or I should start new game? I played almost 2h so it's not too bad.
Besides I'm surprised after dead my new level and new equipment don't disappear like blood. That's nice.
Oh and I forgot. How upgrade weapon? In dreams on the table? I can't. Missing something.

I'm enjoying my time a lot so far. Combat is very satisfying, gorgeous art direction. I feel the game should be 60fps though, it doesn't seem to be pushing the PS4 at all tech wise

Only gripe is the lack of any decent tutorials. I know that throwing you into the world and letting you figure things out on your own is done on purpose, and I like a challenge, but being obtuse for the sake of it isn't a good thing imo. Should at least be quick tutorials besides the occasional messages. I spent a couple minutes trying to see how I could equip weapons in the beginning of the game when that could have simply been explained real quick.
Wait, they don't even explain how to equip weapons? Wow. I hate games that don't explain at least the interface. In my opinion, there's no excuse for that.

Work has been so busy I've hardly had time to play. :(

I started as a Military Veteran with the Threaded Cane and Hunter Pistol. Took me three tries to beat the Cleric Beast, and I may have beat him on my first or second try if the camera and been more of a bro.

I've read a few posts of people claiming the Threaded Cane is weak or something but it seems like it does work in just about every scenario. Both transforms are useful, it has a fairly good transform combo for individual enemies, probably covers more attack angles than any of the weapons I've seen videos of... I'm actually not sure what the downside is supposed to be.

As far as general gameplay, I've really enjoyed what I've played so far. It hasn't seemed as difficult to pick up at the outset as I'd figured. The only dude who put me through the wash cycle for a bit was the first "executioner" looking fellow who was hanging out in a disappointingly dead end; he did not care for me trying to learn how to stagger him with my pistol. He insisted I stop. I think I died to him like five or six times in a row, and wound up having to use blood bullets to finally get him down with visceral attacks. It was only like two or three needed to do so, too. He's going to pay later.

I finally made it past the mob street today, so glad I don't have to go through there again right now. The game really clicked once I passed that part, I just need to do some leveling up now to defeat the 2 bosses that I found. Patience and planned attacks for different enemy types go a long way in this game. I'm enjoying the challenge.

Still adjusting to the controls and some input delay, but I haven't got that much time to play so it's going to take a while. That being said, I'm having a blast.

I'm not an experiences Souls player so came in very much blind. Went for the saw cleaver and didn't regret. I love that there isn't much loot and you don't have to contantly go into the inventory. I find the character sheet a bit confusing. Also I could not find a way to "compare" two armor items, weather one or the other is better.

After beating the first boss I wen't for the
Kirkhammer
and this thing is a beast..

What I also like it that basically leveling up doesn't matter THAT much. It gives you a boost but basically it is purely your skill that generates your progress.

Sometimes the combat is a bit glitchy though, like if you do not lock on a target you sometimes miss the enemy although you clearly should have hit.

All in all it is a fantastic game to me and looking at its origins, I might wanna spend more time on the Souls games afterwards.

Absolutely loving it, it took me a good 5 hours to learn not to rush in and dodge like other games (yes it took me 5 hours at the 2nd checkpoint until I restarted a new char), and I got s little frustrated losing all my echoes, but I learnt to tell myself that some grinding can easily get it back.

Now that I've got the hang of it, I finished the 3rd main boss and really really enjoying it!!

I havnt really used many pick ups, should start looking into that

How do i equip the Molotovcoctail? As it is now I need to go into the menu to use them
Press start, see the four slots at the bottom? That's your quick item menu. Press square after asigning your item to use it and down on the d-pad to switch between the items.

Wait, they don't even explain how to equip weapons? Wow. I hate games that don't explain at least the interface. In my opinion, there's no excuse for that.

The little guys tell you everything on their notes. If you walk around the garden you are told all the basic moves. And then as you progress through the beginning of the game they give you tips/help. Honestly I have no sympathy for someone who thinks the beginning section is difficult when the little guys tell you to split up groups of enemies by throwing stones to attract individual members. Read the little guy's notes, and press R3 in the menus for more details.

Well, i had to start a new game three times because after every time i'd select my starting weapons, i go back to find that i don't have them, and i still have to fight with bare hands, i thought it was a bug because the game is still downloading, then i suddenly figured out how dumb i am.

i played the game for an hour now, other than that lack of "explanation" or tutorial i'm used to in other games, i really like it, i can't wait to get back to it, and all the fear i had about the difficulty is gone (well, didn't meet the first boss yet, so who knows?), but everytime i died in this hour of play, was because i either didn't pay attention, or panicked and started to mash the buttons. i never felt the game was unfair, just that it was my fault, and that i'll do better on the next encounter. i really like the challenge, and the feeling that i've earned my win through every fight. in short, i can't wait for the weekend to have more time with this beauty!

For those of you who took a risk on buying it and are starting to 'get' it, I envy you so so much. This is one of the most special gaming experiences you'll ever have. I kind of had the same thing with BB because it's so different to the others, but that first time it all sinks in in Souls and you realise you've been playing for hours...Goddamn. So special.

Newbie advice from the other thread:
I think the thing that hasn't been mentioned enough about the game in reference to combat aggression is that you can rely on stunlock for most enemies, and the ones you don't stun lock easily are there to be parried. Trust in your ability to keep them at bay by attacking them, work on your parry, and the game is nectar.

Why are people saying this game doesn't look very impressive, and isn't taxing the PS4 at all? It looks jawdropping in every video I see. Should I taper my expectations before I buy it?

Besides the fact that it took an embarrasingly long time to figure out how to equip the weapons it´s going alright. Just played one hour last night but have been hacking and slashing through more enemies than I thought I would be able to handle. Rolling around all over the place seem to be a good strategy so far.

I played a couple of hours of Dark Souls 1 when it came out, alternating turns with a friend while we were having beers. So no real experience.

I played for about 6 hours last night. The game is kicking my ass. The biggest problem is that the controls and combat are so entirely different from what I'm used to (Batman AA and Shadow of Mordor lately), that I keep pushing the wrong buttons. A matter of practice, for sure, but the game isn't really too kind when it comes to letting me practice - dying is fast, common and the loading times and running around eat away at my patience. I'm also having huge difficulties with navigation. I've always been poor in finding my way to places, both IRL and in games, and here the problem is just immense - the environment tends to look about the same all around the place, and there is no map.

I got to the cleric boss a couple of times and got him down to 40% or so. Only this morning, with the help of a youtube video, I realized I had not been utilizing the shortcut to the boss that I already have open. Smart. So, the biggest achievement of yesterday was pretty much 5 levels and getting some practice in with the controls.

I promised myself 10 hours of play time with this game before rage quitting, if it comes to that. So, I'm going back in tonight, but I'm really hoping to make some progress. I understand the concept of satisfaction after beating a tough challenge, but the road there needs to be enjoyable as well. So far it has been that half of the time at best. We'll see.

I haven't played any of the previous FROM software games, but I did play Lords of the Fallen. I think I had my biggest "oh this is how things work in this genre" moments with that game. Bloodborne has been a smooth ride for the small amount I have progressed. Smooth here meaning dying quite a few times but getting better. Good times.

Also I am now at work, but can't help thinking about Bloodborne.

I tried Dark Souls 3 times, played for an hour during each attempt then quit. Whatever tutorial area was in that game (Undead Asylum), it felt bland and boring. Then I got whisked off to some other location, went to the graveyard with 2 skeletons which I couldn't kill. GG.

The closer BloodBorne was to release, about a month ago I told myself: Let's get that "Prepare to Die" edition patched up and stick with it for 5-6 hours. (also watched Yahtzee's review). Found the road to Undead Burg. Killed the Gargoyles after upgrading my Halberd to +3. Now I'm hooked.

I tried BloodBorne yesterday and it looks amazing, but I think I will take it slow and actually finish DS first because I'm just so invested now in that game. I think by the time I'm done, BloodBorne will be all patched up which would lead to a better experience even though I'll miss out on online frenzy which is fine for me.

Was it your starting armour? You can't get it back afaik however there is new armour for you to buy at the vendor and you can find a set in the first level as well.

Yes you keep all your experience, weapons and items you find even after dying. The table is used for upgrading but you either need shards (several can be found in the first level) or gemstones.

Don't quit out on Dark Souls now.

I fancy picking this game up but, and this is going to sound ridiculous, I have a terrible case of arachnophobia and I fear one particular enemy might stop me dead in my tracks. :(

I will continue to consider it.
