Using the proper combos with weapon transformations inbetween helps a lot. Way better then hiting R1 R1 R1 R1 R1 R1 in one form. Can even use the kirkhammer with them (starting combo with sword).

I think you're missing a path right next to the shortcut. Go down the ladder, should be another path very near it.

When you ring the bell to summon people you aren't just opening your game to people that want to help but also people that want to invade you.

And on a more personal note. Some bosses become a joke if you summon 2 people and it takes away some of that rewarding feeling of finally killing them. But if you are stuck and just want to move on it's allways a valid option

Yeah there is a second hunter.

Those NPC hunters come in pairs. It is really annoying.

They also come in triples at one point...

A RULE OF THUMB FOR SOULS GAMES

If you can't reach a piece of loot because it's in a weird spot (floating in the air, in an unreachable place), simply quit the game and load your file again. The loot will be at the mob's original spawn point, or the point that you kicked them off the ledge. No warping is required.

I'm at the part with all the snake creatures. 30k souls, and I'm terrified to progress because of the big snakes. Are the difficult to fight? Is there a shortcut nearby that I can open up?

Extended Axe R2 charged attack is the bane of that entire area. You should have the shortcut to the lamp already, but from there it is a huge layout and a direct path to the boss. But now that you can get there directly from the lamp, I would go back and spend them and then come back.

It's not that someone entering your game takes insight. It's that to summon people you have to ring a bell and doing so costs 1 insight point

Bosses and enemies have more hp online to balance out more players.

Is the wooden shield any good? Do tempering blood gemstones have any use? They only raise attack by .7%.

That's a troll item FROM put in the game. And regarding the second question, you put them into the weapon via workbench. There are better ones out there as well.

Easiest way to do it. Climb up the ladder, get up there and dash towards him weapon a swinging, he will back away from you right off the damn tower.

Save and reset the level and his loot will be at the top of the tower again.

WTF...I have been stuck in the first area for 4 hours maybe more. The guy from ign said it took 12 hours for him to beat the first boss.

well that just means that the guy was awful. considering the type of game is completely normal for the first bosses/areas (although 12 hours for finishing the first area of the game means that he was really awful), especially if you're new to the series. but if you are a decent and experienced player (as in, you played the other games, maybe more than one time) it's not really hard to finish the game around the 20 hours mark.
my clock is around 25 hours and I "already" unlocked the final boss plus got all the boss-related trophies except for one, and I took my sweet ass time trying to explore everything, look at the environment spamming that screenshot button and trying to finish as much as 'npc quests' as possible. and no, I wasn't Dark Souls NA world champion. I'll probably play for another 10-15 hours before moving to ng+. pvp, chalice dungeon, random co-ops etc.
if you don't take your time exploring and doing optional stuff you can easily finish the game in much less time than 20 hours. and I'm not even talking about speedruns.
