Bloodborne |OT+++| ...and so the Nightly Hunt continues

You buy it from the upper Messenger Shop at the Hunter's Dream for 1 Insight.

You need to have 10 insight to activate that merchant.

In the dream, if you enter the house and exit at the first left, there's a second messenger vendor. You need 10 insight to use it. You can buy the bell for 1 insight from it.

Ahh, I have 9, was wondering how to activate that vendor!

Thanks guys

I've never played any souls/demon games and I just bought this. Will open it tonight.

Wish me luck.

This is gonna be a wild one to start with, but you'll cut your teeth and be majorly prepared if you stick with it (do so).

Here are some new player gameplay tips, some other advice from me, and some notes on the controls that haven't been spelled out.
Awesome! You're in for a good time :)

1 - Don't be afraid to run. If you think you can't handle the enemies, run past them. It's a great way to lear the enemies location and level design. Eventually you'll find short cuts that will make you go nuts, that's how good some of those are.

2 - If you want to battle, use the level in your favor. Having enemies lined up in a hall or stairway helps a lot. You can use molotovs to clean house.

3 - Always go for the long ranged enemies first.

4 - Look your stamina. Don't attack non-stop, make sure you have enough stamino to dodge at least twice after a combo.

5 - Try and dodge towards the back of your apponents. Most of them have slow recovery and don't have many opitions to attack you if you're not in front of them, including some bosses.

6 - Level up strength, skill, arcane and bloodtinge when you find a weapon you want to use/test. Since every weapon is viable, just stick to what you like and build your character around it.

7 - Pay attention to your timing, as a fully charged R2 can cause some serious damage to your oponents, but, if you screw the timing, your oponent will be able to make you regret it.

8 - Putting some levels into life until you hit, like, 30, is never a waste.

9 - Look around. There are many traps that can get you and many short cuts and areas you can miss.

10 - Take advantage of the regain system. If they hit you, wait until the oponent is vulnerable and hit him back. This will help you to conserve blood vials.
Just to add to the very practical advice you got, here's some philosophical advice:

1) Don't play angry. Seriously. From Software products are phenomenal games and works of art, but extremely poor "stress relief." In fact they are at their best when they are causing you an intense amount of stress, when you're weak and afraid and far from safety, unsure of what lies ahead, daring you to keep your head and come out on top. No game. regardless of quality, is worth getting legitimately frustrated over, so just try to make sure you're in the right mindset when you start.

2) Don't worry too much if you feel like you aren't "making progress" in the way you might have continuous reinforcement in other games. You will lose thousands of blood echoes. It's going to happen. Embrace it. Even if you are literally spending hours in the same area, attempting the same boss over and over again, you're improving your skill with the core mechanics and combat, learning your enemies, and establishing muscle memory.

3) Just about everything is some degree of obtuse, esoteric, confusing or even impenetrable without some outside assistance. When you run into a situation where you're sure you should be doing something but aren't quite sure what, or know that you need to know how something works to do what you want but it hasn't been explained to you, you might have the instinct to come here and ask about it outright. Follow that instinct. These games are largely designed to force you into some form of community involvement for answers, guidance and clarification.

4) If you're interested, I've heard from multiple sources that the Hunter Axe is the best starting weapon for new players (you'll get a choice). The Threaded Cane is the choice of ballers however.
I don't think I've really seen a perfect combat control list anywhere, and many resources, for example this image, are simply quite wrong in some ways. I can't even off the top of my head remember how it all works in the other games. I just found a second weapon to equip to make sure this stuff wasn't just quirks of the Cane.

For any of those who don't know at least, it seems:

There is no forward + R1 attack (either transformation)
There is no roll + R2 attack (either transformation)
Running + R1 is different than Running + R2 (per transformation, 4 total running attacks per weapon)
Backstep + R1 is different than Backstep + R2 (per transformation, 4 total backstep attacks per weapon)
The L1 transformation attack is always the same regardless of where it is used in a combo
You can use Roll + L1 or Backstep + L1 to use this attack without comboing into it, but there is no running + L1 attack.

Ok so I'm going around in circles in N
ightmare
F
rontier
. I came to the poison swamp before and took a different direction up a hill with rock tossing giants. I get to another swamp only to run through it and find myself back at the first swamp I thought I bypassed. What is going on?

Never mind. Finally coming face to face with A
mygdala
. Got it's life bar down to its name before it blew me up with lasers. Not a particularly hard boss from what I've seen.

I just beat the asshole hunter at grand cathedral ...and talked to the crow lady. She gave me something and then disappeared ..is there more to her quest ? Where is she next?

First time I am genuinely frustrated and frankly pissed off with the level design in this game.

It just felt cheap to do this.

I just beat
Micotash
and there is no save spot after the victory and not anywhere close to a spot to save. I assumed it would be just around the corner like every other boss battle that seemingly has one or is close to one but no.

So I am depleted of resources and get caught off guard by a surprise kid knight thing and lose all 70,000 echoes I had just acquired getting there and beating the boss. Now I spawn back at the old save point and have to backtrack a ridiculous amount in that labyrinth of an area to try and find them.

That is if I don't get killed first.

There's one right around the corner....

she gave you the
crow hunter badge and a rune
? If that is the item you got then its the end of the quest line.

There is one right where you kill him! If you killed him in a different spot, you just have to find the bridge. Not hard at all.

I hate to say it, but you must have missed it, there is one right after the boss. It even shows a cut scene of a bridge being risen which leads to the lamp.

Is a shorter walk than you think.

The new lamp is across the bridge you just activated.

There is a save point and it's after the big bridge if i remember correctly.

Edit: Beaten

what the others said and if you got the elevator before him the run back is very short (just the one room with the 2 cleaver guys and the crossbowguys)

So I'm at the start, currently fighting the cleric beast. So far I've been trying to not use to many blood vials as I fight him but am I going about that the wrong way? Should I not worry if I go about using 20 vials and clutzing my way through?

Can consistently get a third off his health now and it's creeping towards a half off. Made it down to the last quarter once but it wasn't meant to be.

Up the stairs? There's a bridge that wasn't there before... there was even a cutscene that showed it moving.

I saw all that. I beat the guy in the room you drop down from. Went out then right down to the bottom to make sure I didn't miss anything. then up the stairs to the left coming out of the room and ended up on some winding stairs and got killed.

Am I making things needlessly hard for myself trying to take on
Darkbeast Paarl and Rom (fat spider at the lake) at level 23? I've got 623 HP in total with a rune that gives me 5% extra HP and the former of the two bosses shreds anywhere from 40% to 75% off me per hit. I feel like my damage is okay for the most part, though I'm only using the Saw Spear (+6) with the Blade of Mercy I bought and upgraded to +4 being somewhat useless with the amount of Skill I've put points into.

A plain answer should do; I'm trying to approach everything blind, but here I want to avoid levelling way ahead, making stuff that comes right after too easy.

Anyone know a good place to get some ritual blood (4)? I've been looking everywhere, but it just doesn't spawn. Had a bit of luck with the 2 sack dudes who spawned two of them, but since then it's been blood shards, vials and bloodstones. Wooptiefuckingdoo.

It's amazing how short this game can be after you have beaten it before. My NG++ playthrough is clicking in at 2.5 hours and I'm at the door of
micolash
. Considering the ending i need, I'm
two bosses
away from my plat. Likely 3 hours and some change from start to end, with no interest in speed running.

You'll find it in chalice dungeons. Probably a dungeon with a depth of 3, if I remember correctly.

the way I do things is I see how many vials I am burning through as opposed to a bosses health bar. If I have used 8 but he is under 50% I push on. If I burn through 5 and only have a few hits in I cut my losses so I dont burn through all of my vials just to die with him 80% dead.

That said if you use 20 vials and win its always worth it to me. You can farm 20 vials in 10-15 minutes in the sewers.

Same with molotovs on CB. I wait til he is under 50% and I have at least 10 vials before I start chucking them. I made the mistake my 1st attempt of using them right away just to die at the boss.

I think all you can do is kill the sackers in Layer 3 of Lower Pthumeru or any other depth 3 place. I've gotten 2 from them so far. 5 more to go for Ailing Loran...heh...

I'm pretty sure I beat Paarl around that level, Rom not too far ahead. It's still a low level though.

How did you get to those guys at level 23? I found Rom at level 60.

Lots of strolling and admiring first time through.

Still can't beat Watchdog of the Old Lords. I'm level 99. Every video I watched of someone beating him uses the axe or a different weapon than mine. I only have my axe upgraded to +6 and does crap damage to him. I use a saw cleaver +10 as my main weapon. I've waited around several hours over the last day using the bell to get someone to help with this boss. I even tried helping others, but it won't connect with anyone. I've only had one person join me last night who suddenly died somewhere on the level as soon as they got summoned. Then I finally got someone just now, but I died from the Watchdog's fucking one-hit kill charge attack right as I healed so I couldn't dodge in time. Fuck...

Since this isn't a root chalice, shouldn't the chalice glyph code be the same for everyone? Why am I having so much trouble connecting with people in this area?

When you start NG+, do you have to
reach the first boss in order to level up? Don't want to lose my 230,000 Blood Echoes. :)

wish someone would join me and help me kill the last boss, been waiting for 20 min already

i just want this to be done with for now

Mikolash or whatever isn't super hard but God damn he's a resourse drain. Have to grind. Again. For a dumb ass cheap boss. Again. Stupid mistakes.
