GTA V PC Performance Thread

Question. GeForce Experience is suggesting an optimized setting for GTA V that pushes the texture quality up to high from normal for me. Which is nice but if I mess with that setting in game it says I'm using more memory then what is available on my graphics card. What should happen if you try to enable settings that push that bar into the red?

You can override that warning and risk affecting your framerate. I pushed it as far as I can without getting any significant drops in performance, and I'm about ~600 MB over my VRAM right now.

I've been playing this for almost 4 days without a net connection just fine w/ steam offline mode. Today it won't launch past the R* SC splashscreen like it usually would. The game seems to have an expiration date to when you have to "check-in" because theres no way it could know ther server is down or whatever.

I'm trying to avoid having to log-in to R* until after I finish the game since its been running damn near perfect for me and I heard the latest big patch is messing things up in someways.

Now I can't login if I wanted to :(

Ah okay. Thanks.

The VRAM bar in the options menu is probably for the most intensive parts of the game. So far, my game has run perfectly fine with very high textures and 2GB of VRAM, with the settings menu showing 2.3GB of potential VRAM usage (MSI Afterburner usually shows 1.7 - 1.9GB of VRAM usage).

I'm also running Very High textures on 2GB of VRAM. Wouldn't want to turn this one lower, since imo it impacts the graphics way more than the other stuff which are less notable.

Yeah, I played through the prologue with normal textures, and was wondering why they looked so muddy lol.

You can play offline whenever you want, he needs to activate the game first, but is having trouble connecting online to do the activation.

Actually I did successfully activate it - check screen #2. You need to be online to play the game - at least with the retail disc-based release. Is it different for Steam?

When I launch the game:

Sad thing is, it successfully signs me into the damn Social Club bullshit and then it hangs and eventually tells me it cannot log me into their GTAV servers (game was manually registered within Social Club). Whatever. So annoying. Can't even play without using a VPN. Ridiculous.

Yeah that err_gfx_d3d_init normally happens when you're overclocking the GPU too high, happens to me too.

Either roll back to stock clock or take it down in about 20Mhz increments until it goes away.

it's definetly a game specific thing tho. plenty people complaining about it online

not saying it's not the OC but I never got that crash before and i've had my card overclocked for years

edit: also it might not be OC related at all. Apparently it showed up after the new patch

Man, GTA V really runs like a charm on my rig, now that I've overclocked my CPU. Disabled MSAA though and went with FXAA, it looks not that bad IMHO. All my settings are on Very High, only a few are on High (grass, PostFX and shaders). Advanced graphics are all disabled, except for long shadows.

Benchmark says my avg. FPS are 60-75, ingame it's more like 40-60 though, depending on the location. But it's never below 30 (at 1080p).

My rig:

Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.7 Ghz
AMD Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edition (3 GB VRAM)
6 GB DDR3-RAM
1080p monitor

It runs and looks way better than GTA IV on my machine.

Same specs as you, same problem. Over and over, 3 minutes or so into the first mission. I used nvidia's optimizer too.

I think I fixed it, though, b/c I was able to play an hour last night and half an hour tonight. The only thing I changed was to tick the detail distance sliders each down one click. Give it a try; hopefully it suffices until a patch!

I had that happen a couple of times in my first ten hours of play. Doing a full uninstall of my GPU drivers and then a clean re-install seems to have stopped that particular crash from occurring.

Now, if I could stop the aiming while driving crash everything would be grand.

Argh. Getting a little stutter-hiccup-hitching when driving around and panning the camera. It's not constant, but it happens often enough to be really distracting. Can't tell whether it's a specific setting that's doing it or if my computer is just at its limit. I'm getting 90% or more utilization on both gpu's (980 sli) and all four cores of my cpu (4.4ghz 3570k) almost constantly. Everything is on very high, with postfx and grass on high, and dof and msaa are off. I'm getting 50+ fps @ 4k w/ a gsync monitor. On an ssd, no background programs running, temps are good, vram is at 3.6gb used and no higher. Dropping the resolution does seem to help, but fat chance I'll be doing that. 4k is just too nice. >_O

issue with raw mouse input. game stutters when panning or moving the mouse, while using raw mouse input. its very annoying and bad. only way to get rid of it is to use direct input OR to use a xbox controller.

Just got back from being away all weekend and i guess they released a patch? Just when I finally had my settings figured out and now my performance takes a hit. What did the patch do?

I don't think I have the problem, but I'm not playing on very high at 60 fps.

yeah, by default, its Raw mouse input. i have yet to test if gsync is also not helping the issue but with direct input, i get no stuttering moving my mouse.

the game has some weird jitters in cut sense. when i played the first mission i noticed some of the same stutter while the camera was moving in the cut scene (i was no moving my mouse) either way. something is up.

it just bugs me to no end that i cant use raw mouse input :(

I get this as well, however I find that despite the stuttering it's still the most responsive mouse setting for me.

Even at 1080p, it drops occasionally. I just wanted to get it steady for now, and it's been problematic. The Advanced graphics settings really make it stutter low. I'm just curious to see how people are achieving rock steady 60 / what settings.

You will, believe me. I'm on a 4.4ghz 5930k with heavy OC'd G1 970's and I tend to hit the low 40's in the most intensive scenes at 1440p with everything maxed but 2xMSAA.

Finally made it to the country. I see what you guys are talking about in regards to the performance hit. It sure looks pretty though, especially when I flew over it. Hard to believe this was a last generation game. They really did a good job on making the PC version look like a new/next generation game. My mother walked by me while I was playing the game and thought it was a movie or tv show. She commented on how real it looked. Can't wait to build a new system in the next year or so to see this game with higher settings and higher performance.

So, I had to choose between a mix of medium & high settings for 60fps or very high 30fps, msaa off.

PhenomII x4 955 BE
HD 7870 Ghz Ed
8gb of RAM

How do I lock my fps at 30? Setting the v-sync at half just made the game run at 20fps.
The game is hovering at 35-45 fps without dipping below 30 on very high settings, but if I can lock it at 30 it'll be better.

Don't think I can use SweetFX, it's just adding too much to the startup time. With it installed it's 18 minutes to get in game, without it it's under 3. The game looks SO BAD without it.

Man, 4x TXAA is so beautiful in this game!

I had to lower the extended distance and shadow scaling in Advanced Graphics a bit to get it to run smoothly, but it's definitely a worthy trade off.

I love my Titan X and GSYNC. :)

after playing online, predictably those little dips in framerate make a hell of a lot more difference there, lol

i'll tone stuff down once I really get into it after completing the story

MSI Afterburner is your friend. I have a 7870(Tahiti Le) and locked it at 30fps. Very high textures and high everything else.

Finally got to play straight for a few hours without any crashes and all I did was bring my cpu (3570k) back to stock. Either the game is sensitive to overclocks or my 4.6ghz oc wasn't stable, which is weird because its been solid with everything else.

I have to say I'm impressed with the performance. I'm getting 40-60 (mostly 55-60, and locked 60 in many areas) on my 8350@4.5 and 270X@1225, with a lot of the stuff I'm used to having to turn down, like shadow quality, sitting on high.

I think 8 gb ram is not enough for a 12 gb vram gpu.

I just read someone suggest that stuttering is potentially linked to the radio (not just the self radio), so I'm gonna turn it off for a while and report back.

That's weird. I only have a 980 but have no problems maintaining 60 FPS@1080p 99% of the time (even in the countryside). I have all the settings maxed out aside from MSAA - off, reflection MSAA is 2x, Grass quality is Very High, and FXAA on...

Rest of my specs are 5930k, 32GB RAM

Huh- maybe indeed. User guide says it is, although double is recommended.

Damn. 16GB RAM? I think there must be something wrong with my setup.

Population variety 40% (seems to eat up the ram)

During the first run of the benchmarks, the houses are completely unrendered (idk how to take screenshots, I have the social club version not steam) and look ps1 era, but the rest of the test is completely normal. Also I experience a lot of bad pop-in, this video @0:48-0:50 seconds in shows what I'm experiencing but on a larger scale. I have no idea what is causing this.

Edit: OK I dialed down everything that was "very high" to "high" and gone up to MSAA x 4, and so far none of the really bad pop-in like the video I posted but it is still somewhat there but not too bad.

Was having a boatload of crashes and other issues with Window 10 technical preview, wiped everything out and reinstalled Windows 7 and it's running like a dream. Have and old ass i7 950 @ 4GHz and dual 780 Ti's, usually at a rock solid 60 unless I go to play in the grass which will cause it to fall into the 40s. Have to sacrifice very high textures for 2x MSAA because I fucking hate jaggies and I can't really tell a large difference in the textures.

Settings@1440p:
Ambient Occlusion: High
Anisotropic Filtering: x16
Distance Scaling: 100%
Extended Distance Scaling: 100%
Extended Shadows Distance: 100%
MSAA: 2x
Reflection MSAA: Off
TXAA: Off
FXAA: On
Grass Quality: Very High
High Detail Streaming While Flying: On
High Resolution Shadows: On
Ignore Suggested Limits: On
In-Game Depth of Field Effects: On
Long Shadows: On
Particles Quality: Very High
Population Density: 100%
Population Variety: 100%
Post FX: Very High
Reflection Quality: Very High
Shader Quality: Very High
Shadow Quality: Very High
Soft Shadows: Nvidia PCSS
Tesselation: Very High
Texture Quality: High
Water Quality: Very High
Vsync: Forced via Nvidia Control Panel with Triple Buffering (seems to be working, not noticing tearing when my frame rate drops and I never fall from 60 to 30FPS).

Game seems to hover around 2.8-3GB of Vram usage with those settings. At 1080p it's about 2.5-2.7GB so I could probably get away with very high textures at 1080p, but it's a little too much for a measly 3GB of VRAM at 1440p. Even so, the game looks incredible, probably the best optimized port I've played since I can't remember when, perhaps Tomb Raider 2013.

The game is even playable (over 25FPS) @1080p and most settings on normal on my crappy laptop with a GT 750m and dual core processor which was a real surprise for me. Glad Rockstar took the extra time to get it right and weren't just bullshitting about it.
