Marvel will unveil another gay character tomorrow

I thought they already did this back during Chuck Austen's run. As horrible as it was thats about the only thing I remember. He got his panties in a bunch over Northstar because Iceman was a self hating gay.

Lots of people in this thread never heard of denial. The article says the issue will describe current Iceman as trying to cover up his orientation. Very common among LBGTs of all ages (see: Young Iceman catcalling in the leaked page).

It's kind of a weird plot point, but after watching some of Powers, this feel way above average for Bendis. At least Mario Lopez didn't need to explain it to us.

Could have just made him bi and called it a day.

Would be nice to see more bi characters that aren't portrayed as huge sex addicts.

Edit: Shit, I may have completely misunderstood your comment. Apologies if I have.
I was commenting on the possibility that Marvel may have been taking the nurture stance in the nature vs nurture debate if both icemen may have had different orientations. But I posted my comment before the page screenshot/scan was posted... which clearly shows that young Bobby is just as confused about that situation as the readers were at that moment... I'm gonna have to pick up some issues and see what it's all about.

I'm definitely NOT commenting on gay people in general and when they know about themselves etc., as a gay person myself it's something I have a lot of experience witnessing in many ways.
Given with how Disney/Marvel has been handling things with Fox ... that's clearly intentional.

Even if they had good intentions in-so-far as having a character come out, the specific choice of which character is clearly to fuck with Fox.
So you think this is Marvel "sticking" it to fox somehow? I really don't see it that way... Brian Singer being gay had a huge impact on some of the themes brought up in the X-Films... all the gay parallels that were between the lines he had a big hand in accentuating. He's probably as happy as anyone that Bobby (at least in one version, possibly all?) turned out gay. Makes me wonder if he will find a way to add some small nod to this reveal in Age of Apocalypse.
X-Men 2 had a bunch of references to homosexuality, remember the stryker and professor x conversation? :

"Your son wanted me to fix him"
"Our son blamed us for his condition"
"I told your son that being a mutant was not something to be shameful about"
"My son is dead, just like the rest of you!"
Of course I remember... but that was Singer commenting on mutants being treated very similarly to homosexuals because it creates a very powerful message and adds a very real and familiar context to the whole mutants being hated side of things. When I said "Makes Fox's X-Men 1 & 2 seem a bit strange now" I'm specifically talking about the rogue and iceman romance which is a straight romance... sorry if that is not clear?

I'm not surprised. I'm not a comic reader but from skimming marvel related stuff from time to time, my gaydar was sometimes going off with Iceman. Whether intentional or not, the writers couldn't have chosen a better character to 'ret-con as gay. This just feels natural.

I mean even in the movies, he was 'dating' Rogue, who is the perfect beard.

Regardless of whether agree that it's in character or not that reveal is just ridiculous. Representaion is important and being gay shouldn't be turned into some sort of spectacle or a company's way of trying get more readership. Thats what it feels like.

At that link they have a cap of the comic where Jean is all "You're gay Bobby, why do you have to say things like that?" Like gay guys can't talk about how hot a woman is? Young Jean needs to remove her head from her ass.

Whether you agree with it or not, this is just a parallel of all those celebrities 'coming' out, intentional or not. Those things were very instrumental in in pushing where gay rights is today and coming out is arguably one of the most important milestone in a LGBT person's life. Although I do agree that this is a little awkward.

It wasn't a reveal. Marvel wrote a story in which Iceman is gay. The page leaked ahead of time.

This is why they should just stick with alternate realities instead of messing with time travel. There are no rules as to what a person is when he's from a different universe.

But as soon as you use time travel you're bound to the Marty McFly Rules of Time Travel.

Except this isnt being treated like a milestone. More like a forced conclusion. Bobby didnt come to the realization that he was gay, but told he was.

It was a bit hazy whether it was the truth or just teasing. However, just like Rictor and Shatterstar, I love that fandom kept the idea alive so that it becomes canon.

The implication is that he's closeted.

If anything, people should hate Jean for outing him like that.
Well, at least she's not outing him to others. And that she's constantly looking into peoples minds without any sense of privacy has been going on for a while know.

It's also how she found out that
Beast has a crush on her

Several people have taken issue with the word "unveil" in the thread title.

Just want to say that, sorry that GAF doesn't let people edit their own thread titles, or I'd have changed it within 5 mins of posting. I posted this around 30 mins after it started hitting comic news sites... in my haste the argument could be made that I rushed the thread title and could have worded it better.

Why GAF doesn't let you edit your own titles is a bit baffling to me but that's how it is. You technically can edit them in Advanced mode but the changes don't get reflected.

I don't think they're really saying that present Bobby is straight while past Bobby is gay. The leaked page goes on to mention his unsuccessful relationships and seems to imply that they ended up like that exactly because he was actually gay but hiding or denying it. It's a stupid reasoning, considering how unstable relationships are everywhere in comics, but that seems to be what they're going with for now, until someone retcons the young X-Men into being from another universe or something.

The problem i have with that is that it describes so many characters. Its a comic staple to fall in and out of relationships

I am guessing that Bendis will show that the younger X-men mess has nothing to do with the present X-men.

I don't think they are going to adult Bobby gay all of a sudden.

i'm with jean on this one. why is bobby giving in to heteronormativity? he's gay, he should know better imo.

Thank god! This better stick! Bobby's love life wasn't really scorching anyway, and I've always held the playful notion that he's in deep denial like so many other fans. I know this probably pisses off other fans with things getting retconned again, but I love it!

I really love it.

who do certain fans not think is in denial though?

Yeah, and they're all fictional, so the reasons for those breakups are always up for grabs.

I'm not sure of the point of this. Characters change all the time. We literally just spent a weekend lauding an adaptation of a character that was largely based on the retcon of that character. *shrug* Which is to say, who cares if Iceman is gay? Or bi? Or in the closet? At the very least, he has a whole new set of heroes to date for six issues and then drop like a bad habit.

Gay and/or bisexual readers. People like seeing people who are like them represented in their entertainment. And for a comic who is largely based on the discrimination or homosexuals they really never dealt with homosexuality outside of Northstar.

I was arguing for the character being gay or bisexual. And X-Men is based on the discrimination of minorities, not just the LGBT community.

Cool. I've always liked Iceman. Hopefully it won't stay bogged down in a denial story for long, I'd like to see the character really embracing his sexuality.

Of course. But there is a strong homosexuality parallel in that mutants manifest their powers during puberty and most are able to pass as a normal human.

The Beyonder should appear and make everyone gay. Bam! Marvel has more gay superheroes than anyone else. Diversity accomplished!

Also, Beyonder snaps his fingers and randomly turns 75% of the superheroes into various minorities.

Fuck it, all of them turn into Eskimos. Gay Eskimos.

So I guess 'the seed are always there' for any comic character who has failed in straight relationships to be gay.

so that is like most of them....

He is in fact super hot when he's not drawn like a child.

That's... stupid. Not the gay thing, but retconning this. It's really forced.

So future Bobby is in the closet? Okay. Man they keep on making the young X-Men go through some shit. At this point only young Cyclops is actually good. Sigh.

Guys think of the story telling potential.
After they eventually revive Xavier and they can have another "Professor X was a huge prick" revelation between X and Bobby where it turns out X was suppressing Bobby's gayness this whole time because he thought it was icky.

I hate stories where some the know it all character who thinks they know best tells another character something that's none of the know-it-all's business.

It's not your right to tell someone this, or force them to deal with it, even if you're some super mind reader lady, you still don't know what it's actually like.

Like yeah, this is in character for past Jean to reveal shit about others without any sense of decorum and but it's gotten irritating now. It just comes off as manufactured conflict.

How appropriate the avatar. As I said before, we just got done lauding a character created wholly through retcons.

Angry antihero Daredevil? Catholicism? Ninjas? The Kingpin as a primary villain? Stick? The Hand? That's all Miller going for broke and saying "Fuck it". At the time, they were controversial changes for fans of the previous Daredevil. (Born Again practically ruined Karen Page.) Of course, those people got overruled as the comic took off in popularity.

Which is to say change isn't new. So Iceman is closeted gay? Okay. Let's tell some good stories with it. Execution is everything.
