I just have to disagree Parallax, it would essentially tease the gay community with the idea that one of the most iconic characters us someone they can identify and call there own only to say no, changed our minds it's the shitty spin off.

the problem is that minus jean and angel, the spin offs are great characters. cyclops and hank are to me better characters than their current counterparts. dismissing them is pretty off, especially seeing as theres no baggage dragging him down.
I'd find it hard to believe he hid it from Mystique. If anything I'd think he'd be bi, which would make more sense and I'd have no objections to in respect to the history of the character. But Young Jean shot that down. She could be wrong though even with the powers she's using inappropriately.

White Queen is one of the few he met up with that wasn't, and it's not like she'd care. Her brother was gay. Quentin is one of the few that wasn't a friend or completely ambivalent and I really don't think that kid would care about something like that at all. One of his best friends is a skeleton and organs encased in living paraffin wax.
And out of all of the four original males, he always made the most sense as gay. Him and Hank. Hank given how long lasting his relationship with Trish Tilby was, always struck me as a guy just completely unlucky in love more than gay. Self-esteem issues out the ass with an intellect that would make it hard to connect with just about anyone. Bobby I always took as a closeted guy trying his damndest to appear as "straight" as other the other pussy hounds in the club.
If its any consolation I've always thought Gambit was at least bisexual.
I could see Gambit being bi. And yeah, the idea that Bobby is gay isn't that hard to swallow. There are gay people who had just as many deep, intimate relationships with people of the opposite gender as Bobby was. It's not uncommon.
I'm sure as the months pass, people who are so enriched in the decades-long deep, biblical, canon of Bobby's interactions with women, future visions, and telepaths will find some other retcon to throw their hands up and let Bobby be.
Do you realize how many gay and straight Iceman cosplays we'll see now? With their shirtless bodies covered up with nothing but body paint and a pair of briefs? I know this turn of events may not make canonically sense, but don't deny us this!
Marvel could simply say that Xavier put up a block from people from finding out or something and even if the writer were to go the "cure" route they could always write to come off as a bad decision he regrets. There's pretty much an unlimited number of ways to handle it and no matter what it is it wouldn't be crazier than only other retcons Marvel has pulled out.

In this day and age, if they just did this and go back on it at a later date and treat it as a stunt it will be a PR disaster. Ice Man is to big to shelf so this means they have to work with it.

I just wish they hadn't gone full-silly in their wording and presentation of this information.
Other than that, I don't see this as a big huss and fuss. Of course, someone somewhere is totally going to ask presidential candidates about the "Iceman Situation" and we'll get some particularly terrible gaffes.

Exactly my point. Bobby has SO MUCH history that it's tough to pull something like this off without it feeling just "out of nowhere." Apparently they didn't even pull the "sexuality is fluid" bit, which might have worked. Its just awkward here.
Of course, you can't be a slave to continuity and things must change, but this is poorly done.

I dislike that they have to "unveil" a gay character. There is always a spectacle around the reveal for marketing purposes and then the gay character is put back on the shelf while the major characters continue as normal.
To be fair, the unveiling part is just editorializing from news sites, to whom it sounded better than "shithead pirates leak a plot point from tomorrow's issue, here is us propagating it".
It was not a Marvel marketing event and Bendis certainly didn't want it to leak, he's said as much.

This is one of those instances where having read decades of comics actually hurts these type of "twists" because I was reading a lot of those old X-men comics watching Iceman chase dozens of girls around, with his love-triangle with Polaris and Havok being a major one (he certainly wasn't chasing after Havok all those years). His narrations and internal monologues were definitely written from a straight perspective. He was obsessed over that girl.
But I've been reading for a LONG time, so while Marvel retconned Magneto to no longer be Scarlet Witch's father and some people were upset, I was relieved... because they clearly didn't intend for that to be the case early on, and it made some of his "experiences" with her incredibly creepy in retrospect.

Isn't that the beauty of comic canon (I guess only Marvel now since DC bulldozed theirs)? Very few characters remain the same as their initial incarnation after a decade or two. A continuous stream of writers adds new backstory and quirk. Even better, these pieces can then be rearrange to "discover" new traits or relationships. In this way, despite the desire to return to status quo, characters still organically change. Being a popular fan theory means that the pieces are already there.
BTW, did Austen ever commented on if he was actually hinting at Iceman's sexuality during his run or was it just throwaway lines?
