(Copypasting my post from a couple of days ago from the spoiler thread due to relevant information. Obviously anything I said about DeKnight doing another season is meaningless now though, lol):
Finally had time to sit down and watch the
DeKnight IGN interview. Great talk, he sounds really down for another season. Goes over future ideas and hints that were in the first season about Elektra, Bullseye, the Iron Fist mythology allusions, etc. A few points:
-Concerning Karen: he says they want to explore the way the character ends up becoming a tragic figure, but that it doesn't mean that they'll go as far as making her fall into drugs, pornography and selling Matt out for a fix of dope. (Imo it's a good thing that he realizes there needs to be some restraint, all of that at once would feel forced for this version of the character and the response wouldn't be very good.)
-This was mentioned in the thread already, but killing Ben was Marvel's idea. DeKnight himself was surprised, but it was a decision that was set in stone before he even got the showrunner position from Goddard. From what he says, Marvel wanted to do it because they really wanted to sell the idea that despite everything you know about the comics, in this world everything goes. They hadn't even cast the part yet when it was decided that Ben would die.
-The scene with Stick and Stone was initially planned as a "post-credits" scene for the show, but since Netflix has the feature of autoplaying the next episode and cutting mid-credits they decided to mix it at the end of an episode.
-Says he didn't feel the burden of having to link up with any other show and that they only really did that when it felt natural for the season (like with Gao), and that he thinks that as they move forward is when it starts getting complicated because they need to avoid contradicting whatever happened earlier. He and Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones showrunner) had very little time to talk because they were both very busy during development.
-Is there a chance of DD season 2 happening simultaneously with the other Netflix shows? He can't say anything about that, but obviously the response has gotten people thinking about the possibilities. With any deal there are possibilities of more seasons, although with this model they're following it becomes exponentially more complicated. He'd love to do more and the cast is down for another round.
