Does anyone else not give a shit about comics

I bought the Batman comic or graphic novel with Superman in it by Frank Miller.WTF
It had some decent parts but overall it was ass. Nice messy art though.

I like a good graphic novel, though I don't go looking for them. I've got copies of a few like From Hell and Watchmen but I've never seen the movies - Superhero/comic book movies don't really appeal to me, but action movies in general never did.

As a teenager I got in to X-Men and related books, this is early 90s and we had a few good comic shops here with good back catalog sections and import anime, manga, model kits etc. I totally geeked out between 12-17 but I grew out of them and sold my collection. I don't mean to sound condescending by saying that as if people my age (30s) who still buy them are childish, I don't really see it any different to such an attitude some people have with video games and age. I just mean I moved on to other interests and I think I was always more interested in the art than the stories any way. When I was a lot younger (under 10 say) I never had the money to buy comics but would always see them in shops and I would always flick through Doctor Strange or lesser known titles that were stocked in local newsagents because they never had any bigger name titles, so when I got a bit older and had disposable income of my own I think that fascination with the artwork was still there and that got me in to collecting them, but my heart was never in it - I just liked collecting, buying, the art.

I think anyone who has a passion for collecting or being totally in to something is cool in my book. But I think geek culture is seen quite different since the popularity of super hero movies and sci-fi TV shows in the past 10-15 years or so, I know that is just the surface, but it's removed some of the stigma of Geekdom that I remember being there as a kid.

The first Hulk was terrible the one with Edward Norton in it rocked. I would prefer Ed Nor to be in the Avengers.
From Hell is a good one. I should watch it again to see how well it holds up.

Dark Knight movie would have been less stale if Superman was it as well as Two Face.

I've been reading comics since I was a kid. Mainly for the art tho. The shit they put out today is garbage.

I was never a fan, although some of the movies like Iron Man and Winter Soldier are good.

Although if I ever get my hands on Watchmen then I don't know what'll happen.

Comics have never really appealed to me. The plots seem contrived and a lot of the characters are ridiculous. Very few series seem to take themselves seriously.

I'm sure many people say the exact same about video games, though.

I could say the same about a lot of books, really. Comic or non.

I don't care at all about comics, but they don't piss me off or anything. What does piss me off is that every movie that's coming out is a shitty comic book movie. Or a sequel to a shitty comic book movie. Or better yet, a sequel to a sequel to a shitty comic book movie.

And people on the internet treat these things like some amazing, wondrous things and anticipate them like the second coming of the messiah.

And the sad truth of the matter is that the vast, vast majority of these films fucking suck. Even Guardians of the Galaxy, which was hyped (especially here) to no end. Sucked. Big time.
Come at me, GAF.

Why the hell is this thread 7 pages.

I don't follow, why wouldn't it be? But you should pick up Sex Criminals if you haven't already.
3 pages of people getting exposed to Sex Criminals and Afterlife with Archie is a good thing.

Superheroes are the definition of lame, and I wish there was a browser extension to block all the mcu and Dc crap shitting up the OT.

I genuinely can't understand anyone over the age of ten being excited about them, and I'm a Nintendo fan. (Don't take this as fighting words or whatever, it's just a weird hole in my empathy. I literally straight up can't understand the appeal.)

There are some good comics out there tho.
I don't really care for superheroes outside of Batman, Punisher, and Daredevil. But non-superhero stuff from Image and Vertigo is fantastic. Wytches, Lazarus, Black Science, Saga, Fatale, Criminal, Deadly Class, Low, Nailbiter, Scalped, to name just some

I don't care about actual comic books but love to watch comic TV and movies as well as play comic video games. I just don't have the time or money to collect a bunch of comics every month.

I didn't see GotG because it looks lame. Ant Man looks lame as well. LMAO @ Ghost Rider. Walking Dead new season could be better.

Every movie = like 3-5 a year?

Yep. You can get a free month right now with the promo code STARWARS

Oh wow, fancy! Do I need a credit card to get that or can I get the free month no strings attached? I am away from my tablet atm to check.

I meant because OP's starting point of this thread ( I hate comics pay attention to me) I was wondering how it made it to 7 pages. But its nice to know people who may have not been interesting in comics before are finding stuff they might be interested in. I read some of sex criminals , its pretty good.

I'm sure there are plenty people who don't like comics out there.

I just choose not to socialize with them for ethical reasons.

I love superheroes and superhero movies and superhero cartoons and superhero games (well, Batman Arkham anyway).

...But I've never really liked comics. I just don't really find the act of reading them to be enjoyable.

Theres a word for this, but I cannot recall it at the moment. It describes seeing what you want to see or something like that. I want to say tunnel vision but thats not really an accurate description.

In any case, as has been shown with data many times in the past. Comic movies only happen a few times a year, and are vastly outnumbered by movies in other genres. Its not even CLOSE. So where this idea comes from that there are a million of them is bewildering to me.

Not really, OP is referencing that there are quite a number of comic related threads in Off Topic lately, which is true, there are usually at least 3-4 comic related topics going at any time.

You don't say.

Seems as silly as saying you completely don't give a shit about a certain type of genre of Music. *I like all genres of music...apart from Country and Rap" You read don't you ? Books? Magazines ? Graphics Novels ? I don't see how a Comic Book is any different, completely Hand waving at a type of Medium seems silly to me.

You realize there is more to comics, even superhero comics, then the ongoing canon universe of DC and Marvel? Comics are a medium. They hit all genres and forms just like any other medium. This is like basing your thoughts towards video games on military FPS or open world sandbox games.

Great point, thanks. I should clarify that I was referring to periodical comic books, too. Not graphic novels or anything single-issue.

QFT. I'm a huge DC/Marvel fan but the amount of useless threads about them are plain retarded.

There is no need for 50 different threads on the same topic. Who gives a shit who turns gay and who dies in the newest comic? Keep that shit in the Marvel/DC threads.

I didn't see GotG because it looks lame. Ant Man looks lame as well. LMAO @ Ghost Rider. Walking Dead new season could be better.
The only memorable comic book movies to me are Sin City, the first Spiderman, and probably the first couple Nolan Batman films (the third was hilariously bad).

Every movie = like 3-5 a year?
Just off the top of my mind, in 2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America 2, X-Men, Spider Man, Sin City 2, Kingsman, 300 2, etc etc. It's way more than 3-5.

if i could pay $5 a month to have unlimited access to lots of non-marvel/dc stuff i might.

right now it's too expensive and inconvenient for me to put in the effort. give me comic netflix or fuck off.
FWIW, every now and then there's a Comixology Submit sale where they have bundles with dozens of no-name indie books for a few bucks. It's a great way to discover whatever unconventional stuff some people are making. It's a mix of bad, passable, charming and genuinely good but it's always interesting.

I loath comics. Violent manchild soap opera. A good way to part a fool and his money.
Because no one would ever characterize games that way, obviously.

There are tons of periodical non-superhero comic books. In every genre. Sci-fi, horror, fantasy, humor, action, espionage, etc.

Sin City is amazing. Nice score. I need to purchase the Graphic novel. Sin City Two isn't that bad. It just slows down after an amazing start. Eva Green is pretty boss in it. Nice moral messege in it as well. A lot more violent than the first imo.

Serial comics still have plenty of diversity. A lot of which referenced in this thread. Lumberjanes, Deadly Class, Sex Criminals, Wicked + The Divine, Descender.

So that's 6. Go on.

Actually that's 7. And I'm sure there are more.

I was obviously exaggerating earlier, but my point still stands. There has been a deluge of these movies in the last few years (which is only getting worse), which for the most part, are nothing more than hollow, dumb experiences consisting of a myriad of CG explosions with a usually terrible, ridiculous plot serving as an excuse to tie it all together.

OK. So there are literally hundreds of films that were released in 2014. And you've named 6. So there is an abundance of other choices for you to sample and not have to worry about getting worked up about Comic Book movies. Go enjoy a new musical, or a romantic comedy. These are genres that don't appeal to me, but you don't see me going around complaining that they exist.

Between music, art, gaming, and television, i never got into them. Most of the comics i read growing up were Archie Comics, tbh.

I don't give a shit about them either. I'll see some of the movies and play some of the games, but I am not emotionally invested into them at all

Oh sure. There's a lot of stuff in this thread that interests me, but I barely have time to watch/read/play stuff that I own let alone a whole bunch of other shit.

Part of my superhero hate comes from the obsession with canon and plot over quality of prose and character development. Same reason I can't fuck with fantasy or sci if a lot of the time.

I don't really enjoy the current trend of marvel and dc swarming all over tv and movies. I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a single tv show or movie. The most I can say is that they are ok.

Not really, OP is referencing that there are quite a number of comic related threads in Off Topic lately, which is true, there are usually at least 3-4 comic related topics going at any time.

Then don't read them. I don't like Last of Us, but I didn't make a thread about the fact I didn't like it when there were tons of threads on gaming side.
