Why are folks shocked by this?
This is just the norm for this gen, it will only go up from here.
50 gig downloads will be the norm for most things in a few years.

This is why Digital only is truly a stupid idea as long as broadband in the USA and lots of other places in the world is not good and cost effective enough.
 
I think the platform-holders need to enforce languages as optional installs. So you'll be asked which languages you want to install before downloading. That way we'll shave some precious gigabytes off.
 
Utter shit engine, it can't die soon enough. To think that iD created some of the best engines around, and this abomination.

It truly is a head scratcher to this day. Then again... building your engine around the constraints of last gen consoles does that.

But we at least have the glory of idTech 4. That will always look great.

I think some were expecting the game to be notably smaller than Wolf14 given it's roughly half the length (it's a standalone expansion, not a fully-fledged prequel).

The funny thing is the promise was to have super high detailed textures for every object, when in reality Rage and Wolf had some of the worst textures you'd find out there.

What's with idtech5 and huge patches though? I remember seeing like 5-7 GB patches that just seem to fix code bugs.

The main draw of id Tech 5's MegaTexture technology is doing away with the need to tile textures in favour of making entire levels blank canvases for environment artists, so fixing an anomaly in a texture requires that the entire texture be replaced. The one and only patch Wolf14 received on the PC was just 34MB.

so this is like an expandalone right? same assets, a whole new campaign. Any info on how long the campaign will be yet?

Reportedly 8 hours, but I always subtract 25% from developer/publisher-touted figures to account for overstatement.

The Old Blood is a stand alone expansion. It needs the assets of the original game else people who don't have the original cant play it.

That's true of something like Undead Nightmare, which has a DLC version for existing owners alongside a standalone version, but TOB is technically a new game with its own data. There may be some overlap with regard to weapon skins and other smaller secondary textures, but with each id Tech 5 level having its own single ultra-large texture, it's not really possible for expansions to reuse assets to any meaningful degree (assuming the intent is to offer new levels and not reuse existing ones). This is why, for example, both Evil Within expansions are each close to 8GB in size:
