Destiny House of Wolves Reveal Thread

Buff Auto Rifles and then we might me talking.

Indeed. But for PVP there is never perfect balance. Now everybody cries about Thorn. They buff the auto rifles again. People will cry again about that.

Yep. They are finally catching up to the community.

Jup. Important time also for them imo. These are the big moments Bungie needs to show that Destiny is a evolving game and the commmunity is a big part of it. They learning also because this is all quite new also for them. But they showing progress in alot of things. So imo the future is bright for Destiny.

My worries about the upgrade system:

1.) Etheric Light will be relatively rare and hard to come by. Maybe 1 per Weekly/Nightfall. This is just my speculation.

I whole heartedly agree that Etheric Light will be quite rare, but eventually we'll build stockpiles over time just like any other material.

Etheric Light has to be rare, otherwise everybody will be level 34 with all 365 attack weapons the first week and we know Bungie doesn't want that.

Everybody's happy that it appears that Bungie has greatly lessened the grind, and in many cases they have, but I think they are forgetting Etheric Light is needed to max both legendary weapons and armor.

We won't know for sure until Bungie says how rare it will be or until HoW launches and we find out for ourselves, but I think there will be a lot of unhappy people if you are only able to get a 1-2 Etheric Light per week.

Luckily, exotics can be ascended without relying on RNG at all.

Salvage "manages". Let me tell ya, probably 90% of my Destiny PVP playtime is in Skirmish & Salvage. I ran with a full team, and pretty much every game was a pub stomp, filled with quitters, and people dragging a 2 man team down. I would take a guess that less than 50 of my matches have been competitive in the 3v3 modes in Destiny...

To further elaborate on this. I have a friend that happened to notice after his 20th win at Salvage that he was actually on a 20 win streak. He had never lost a game of Salvage ever. So he stated he would only play Salvage in a group until the streak was broken.

He made it to game 66.

I'll repeat. He had a 66 game win streak in Salvage. That's the kind of perk you get playing with a group.

Yep. Not everyone has the time or resources to coordinate gaming sessions, or has an extensive list of friends to coordinate with. This is especially true if you're juggling a career, family, a social life or a combination of all of the above. Bungie is basically saying too bad and people who are against match making don't see the other side.

Then bungie can find a way of implementing matchmaking where there is a penalty for such practices. Maybe a rating system or some type of adverse effect on mats or glimmer, or even gear or weapon effectiveness. Public shaming is also a good idea, having the person wear a clown suit armor that makes you shit tacos and emits fart noises when you walk around the tower for being a douche is a good start.

somewhat true I don't know what bungie is thinking but if I was in charge I wouldn't implement a raid / matchmaking system that I felt would not work well, encourage more bad feelings amongst the community, and would ultimately feel like a failure. And I certainly wouldn't allocate resources into making such a system either.
VOG when it released, would likely result in like 1/10 or less successes with a matchmaking team, now that there are many level 32, it's a different story but it just flat out would not have worked for VOG. it was too hard, even with gaf players I was at about a 1/3 completion rate. Imagine randoms? 1/10 is a kind assessment.

a good matching system / invite system would be better, but people invite me from the tower all the time, there are some tweaks that could be done but its not as though its impossible to find randoms now. some sort of lobby perhaps.

Yea, I just checked and I have a 86% in Salvage and 77% in Skirmish. ToO with those matchmaking rules would not be a competitive experience. Maybe it won't even be competitive with the full teams, but it has a much better shot than the current setup.

I guess this is why I support the no MM, the game really lacks a competitive PVP aspect right now. IB is 6v6 which is by and large a clusterfuck on most maps. I've said this many times with the people I play with, but Bungie should have never moved the player counts beyond 3v3 for PVP, they should be leveraging the fire team aspect, which is what makes the game unique compared to other FPS. Focus on small team PVP that allows for more tactical play, and get away from this bologna where you have 12 people running around on a 6 player map shooting supers and heavy weapons every where.

I think it will add to the whole "You earned it factor"

Like Thorn for instance. Having the skill to acquire Thorn is interesting to factor when you find someone with Thorn.

Similarly, when you see someone sporting a Fate of All Fools in the future, or someone enters Iron Banner wearing a full Osiris set, you'll know. This is a person who is probably going to fuck me up.

That tile goes to The Anomaly, I hate that map. For every 5 gmes I play 2 are in The Anomaly.

Amen. Worst map in the game. Just a shotgun camp fest on the outer ring and shotgun sprint fest in the center room. At first it was fun and pretty hilarious but after seeing the map in the rotation every other game it got boring and now I usually just jump out. I hate to leave a team shorthanded but I play for fun and that map is anything but.

Exactly, I'm all for shit like that. I want there to be gear in the game that not everyone can get, even if it means I might not get it either. The game is sorely lacking in gear that shows someone actually pulled off a feat in game. The Mythoclast was great until everyone started cheesing Atheon. I want more of that, but I want it to be legit. To me, that's how you build a cool game world.

It's similar to the vanilla WoW legendary weapons. The Hunter in particular had an extremely long quest line to get a bow that actually required you to be pretty damn good at the class.

They should take the Thorn idea and expand on it greatly in the future.

In theory at least, Etheric Light should be about as rare as Legendary Drops. Since each one essentially a new Legendary Weapon for you, and is about as valuable as 32 Shards + 4500 Glimmer (the cost of filling out the upgrade nodes on old weapons).

People were so happy to hear that they could upgrade weapons that they didn't really stop to consider the economy of how they would be upgraded.

I mostly just hope that there is at least 1-2 ways to get a guaranteed Etheric Light each week. If you're running 3 characters (and who isn't at this point?) then you can have most of your important weapons bumped up within 2 weeks.

It's the same kind of people who get mad when they buy something that goes on sale the week after.
No it's the same kind of people that get it, not the ones that are whining about the lack of matchmaking where it wouldn't work in the modes and would actively make it worst for the people saying that they should add it.

What happens when it gets added and the same people calling for it at every turn have bad experiences because of it and bitch about it? Would those same people search out a group? of course not but than they are still complaining about it.

I don't have an issue if they include matchmaking but your example above is a terrible example and really doesn't help your point and I think hurts it.

Ideally I think an ingame lfg would be perfect without the need for matchmaking for raids or the trials.

Some extra info.

Crucible marks and rep are doubling across the board

Trials passages cost 100 glimmer

There are 12 new legendary items that can drop in the Crucible

Etheric light is a guaranteed drop at level 3 and level 5 of Iron Banner

If you ascend an exotic, you will not lose progress but will have to continue leveling an unfinished item

Crucible rewards have doubled in their frequency and the better you play, the more likely the reward

Dark Below crucible maps will soon be free to all

Trials matchmaking (to clarify, this is between your fireteam and your opponent. You must make your own fireteam) will choose connection over skill

There will be an Elimination Mode you can play all the time (Trials minus the bells and whistles)

Completing the daily crucible objective will give you a reward package that will contain Passage Coins for items that will help in Trials of Osiris, glimmer, motes of light, and more.

From IGN:
Etheric light is the new item that lets you upgrade all your gear to the new maximum level. Bungie confirmed that you’ll receive one from hitting level 3 in Iron Banner, one for hitting level 5 in Iron Banner, as random drops in Trials of Osiris, and as a supplemental drop in Nightfall missions.

It sounds like Etheric Light will be a guaranteed drop from Nightfalls.

Didn't get a chance to check out the stream but did read about the update in Game Informer... and I must say that Trials of Osiris is the perfect endgame for Crucible fans... similar to what raids are for strikes.

I don't mind the lack of matchmaking here... as it forces you to get a couple of friends together each weekend and play through with a strategy. While i do think the raids would be better through matchmaking (especially now since so many people are familiar with the raids now)... but this trial would be lame playing through it with random people.

As for the new maps... I like all of them... especially the european dead zone. I do recall reading about how earth was originally supposed to have to two major locations with one of them being the european dead zone. Hopefully they will touch more on it in comet.

Overall... regardless of the lack of a raid... it's starting to look like HoW completes the first destiny title well.

People whining over free content and what is an earnest attempt to keep the PVP community from being too splintered? Yeesh.

I wouldn't be surprised if they add the Dark Below strikes to playlists for vanilla players as well.

Lol what a joke. As if the cut content now being sold as paid dlc wasn't enough.

Next thing you'll know they'll let everyone try PoE free too.

This isn't new dude, especially not from Bungie.
Halo DLC maps have been made free over time as new DLC packs have been released. It stops the community from getting mad fragmented.

But no, don't let that stop your outrage at these disgusting, anti consumer business practices.

This all sounds really good. Could I possibly start playing Destiny again?

I'm actually glad they are taking the focus off of raids for a while.

Yeah you'd think they would have done that, but no. Only Halo 2 map packs went free, and only the first map pack, Heroic, went free in Halo 3. All the rest are still to this day for pay and their integration into matchmaking has always been strange and dubious.

Yeah, honestly every exotic should have had a tough as shit quest line rather than be a random drop. Or, the random drop should have been a bounty quest line for that exotic.

I'm definitely sure I owned all of the Halo map packs without paying for any of them. Don't you get the lot with ODST or something? I don't remember.

I'm not salty about other people getting free shit anyway, it doesn't take any potatoes off my plate.
and they're shit maps anyway.

I think a lot of people defending the lack matchmaking aren't taking into account that, for whatever reason, raids seemed to have been designed with the intent of forcing players to work closely with people they know. It's not like they designed the best levels they possibly could and in the end those levels simply couldn't end up with a viable matchmaking option in place. Bungie doesn't want you to fly through their content. They want as many roadblocks in place to keep you gaming, and the raids reflect that.

Now just imagine if they dedicated all that effort and all those resources into making content that was just simply fun to play.... and doesn't have any of this social experiment bullshit.

ODST came with a halo 3 complete MP disc and a download code for the final map pack for halo 3 if you wanted to use it with the main game.

Good because more maps are welcome and the game needs them and everyone can match up together.

Bad because that was paid DLC only 5 months ago, lol.
I'm one of the few NOT handcuffed to the season pass, and this...along with no Raid pretty much solidified my decision to skip HoW. I'll just wait for Comet.

Yeah the maps were included on disc if you bought ODST. But the map packs never went free other than halo 2 and halo 3 heroic. Still have to buy them to this day.

Lol only one map pack has been free. But no, continue to think otherwise.

No teammate matchmaking is beyond silly. That aside, sounds like a nice gamemode. Is gear leveled or is this like iron banner? Since its supposed to be the competitive mode, I hope its all leveled. Still hoping for a mode with a special armor and weapon set that are truly balanced and with no radar or supers.

I can understand people wanting MM, but honestly for this mode it makes sense to not have it. It's more competitive than Iron Banner and because it's so focused on wins if you're playing with randoms it'd be easy to lose more than you win. 3 losses and you're out.

Oh I forgot, Cold Storage map for halo 3 is still free and was made available as a gift on Bungie day way back. Forge Island is also free for halo 4.

Also, 343 accidentally gave away the first map pack, Crimson, for halo 4 for free at first, and instead of admitting to the mistake, they invented a promotion called 14 day buy and play out of thin air and pretended like that was the plan all along and then removed the maps from everyone after those 14 days.

I'm sure this has already been beaten to death. All I'll say is it makes sense to play with a team. It makes sense in all competitive team vs team games. It makes no sense to not be able to play without.

Good to see community splitting DLC made free and available to all, but why do this now?

And is this the plan with all future maps?

Yeah I like this even though I bought TDB. Will make for more variety in matchmaking. Like Bungies halo 2 days. Good on them. I applaud it. I hope that's the plan for all of them going forward. Its the right way to do it.

IIRC, etheric light will drop for a large number of sources - Nightfalls, the current raids, PoE and other sources. It does not sound like it will be too rare.

I just realized how Bungie flipped the matchmaking question with this DLC. The raids and nightfalls do not feature matchmaking given the nature of them, so in this DLC Prison of Elders will slot in to provide a PvE endgame mode. (I can't recall if PoE matchmaking is not announced, but I think it's a given.) While PvE gets a much more hardcore and different endgame, but which requires premade parties ala Nightfalls.

I used to think that MM was a given for PvE but after listening to them talking about MM in the context of ToO today I am no longer convinced. Now I personally expect PoE to have no MM at all, or to have some lower tier easier version with MM that doesn't have the same rewards. But we have to wait until next week to find out for sure.

From IGN:

It sounds like Etheric Light will be a guaranteed drop from Nightfalls.

If Etheric light is a guaranteed drop from NF then all of us with three characters will get three of them on May 19 and have one level 34 character on day 1.

I'm not against MM by any means, I just think that for alot of these modes in Destiny it's more frustration than it's worth. Playing with randoms can work fine or it can be miserable.

They should put it in that spaceship bar on the Tower. Putting a party together at the tavern is a time honored gaming tradition!
Haha, that's a cool idea, but I want it to be quicker and always accessible. I want a new tab to the pause menu that lists people looking for help with various activities. I'd also love to have an activity specific invite system. Like, I could choose a friend from the roster, invite them to play the Nightfall, and then they'll get a quick, unobtrusive notification in the corner of their screen letting them know. That would really help Destiny meet its true potential as a social game.

the content is fun to play especially the raids, they have some great mechanics built into the game. Matchmaking isn't a good solution for it but something like an ingame lfg is.

Agreed 100%

And when I say matchmaking (and I think probably for most people who advocate it as well, but I can only speak for myself) I mean any in-game solution to let players find other players. Straight up strike-style matchmaking would have its own challenges, but if in theory that was added, I would still prefer it to no option at all. It's the lack of options I find aggravating, especially when it seems like that was the intent of the game's design.

Boooo!!!

thats 20 days away...

though I am curious what the schedule will be for content updates like these, they seem too far apart for the content to sufficiently last the distance
Next DLC is supposedly the major "Comet" update, and that's not expected until September, so hopefully Bungie will add stuff in between to cover that fairly large gap.

Is the raids point confirmed? They very carefully did NOT include those in their reveal stream last week and I think they say the list 2-3 times? They said NF, IB, and PoE but they never mentioned the raids....

It seems very weird if it doesn't but who knows?
