I actually hadn't seen that criticism yet... yikes, lol. I feel like there are many aspects one could latch onto to give the movie some grief about but that really isn't one.
Hulkbuster vs. Hulk fight, especially the "elevator whip" moment and construction site collapse had me going very wow in IMAX 3D.
should have been more sinister. I'm not someone who demands DARK AND GRITTY OMGGG all the time, but I expected something far more intense dialogue-wise.
2. Hawkeye
's wife and kids? Really? I didn't dislike them, I guess.. My hopes and dreams of Mockingbird getting movie screen time and starting a thing with him have just been dashed. I guess they really did transfer that relationship over to Hunter.
I thought it was "more of the same" but also way more sure in what it was doing. Felt less like a "Okay let's see if this works" and more like a "It works, time to go balls out"
Not that it's perfect, but everything felt better. Characterization, action (ho BOY the action is so much better), cinematography, etc. Everything.
Well, it's not hard to top the first. It's not like Loki was a better villain. It's not like it ended with an legion of indispensable things. Didn't both end with a big explosion as well?
Movie was dynamite in the IMAX experience. Loved most of it, some parts I could have done without, but overall very impressed. I'd say this is leagues better than the first.
Still in the theater. Holy hell. That was way better than the first one. It did a better job connecting everyone on a more personal human level that actually makes you think. Didn't expect it to be as funny as it did. There were quips galore and Ultron was funny as hell. I definitely enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed it, will see it again later this weekend, too. Liked it about as much as the A1, just in different ways. There werea few things that would have made it numero uno for me, but was still a great flick. 7.5/10
+ Fights and tag teams were awesome.
+ Opening act was well done and got you pumped.
+ Loved the Hawkeye focus, good stuff.
+ When BW opened up to banner about her "sterilization," was really touching. I wanted to just jump through the screen and give her a hug.
+ Loved the comedy and banter for the most part.
+ Ultron was great and the dialogue between Ultron and vision was excellent.
+ Pedro was better than I anticipated and was bummed he ate it, really liked him as a dude.
+ Scarlet Witch is delicious.
+ The island blowing up was actually pretty cool.
- The "quips" during fight scenes was kinda annoying and pulled me. Like when BW was riding the bike and what not.
- Really wanted more development in terms of the AI, Ultron, Vision and how all that was manifested. Shit happened way to fast and abruptly. Hopefully the DVD will have the extra hour or so that was cut.
- Got lost in the Thor pool scene, didnt' quite get what that was all about.
- Wish pedro's death and Wanda's reaction had a bit more time to develop.
- Certain metaphor's / concepts seemed a bit heavy handed. The audience isn't retarded, you can use subtitles.

IMO, it's about on par if not only slightly below it. It's kind of an odd comparison to me though. Guardians is such an outlier in the MCU from a lot of perspectives. But if I was ranking them, I think I may have it above AoU by only a hair. That's not to say AoU isn't excellent though.
I disagree. Avengers 1 is probably my most rewatched movie. I still love watching it and don't get the sudden 180 the internet did on it some time last year.
In comparison to the first movie, I feel Avengers 2 is better made in terms of direction and action. It falters plot wise because it's just very messy overall compared to the relatively simple plot of the first. You can tell Whedon struggled a lot to include everything he wanted in the film in the alotted running time.
Yeah, I never get this. "I hate every Marvel movie, but I'm going to continue seeing every Marvel movie just so I can complain about them on the internet!" Like, don't you have better stuff to do with your time and money?

I'm pretty mixed on it right now, but since for the first 45 minutes, I was too busy screaming internally about how there was no Star Wars trailer, no Batman v Superman trailer, old trailers for Jurassic World, Terminator, Tomorrowland, and Fantastic Four, and NO STAR WARS TRAILER - I was pretty much in a bad mood.
Basically, the new characters are great. Quicksilver is cool for what he is
, but I'm happy he's dead.
Scarlet Witch was awesome, her powers were cool and she was a badass. Hawkeye counts as new because he has some fleshing out finally and it's well worth the wait. Ultron was a fun villain too; a bit disappointing at first, but I grew to like him. The real highlight is Vision though; every second he was on screen, I had a huge smile on my face even though I have no history with the character. He felt like... well, at risk of starting a fanboy war, Superman. He was majestic and wonderful and wow. I just really really liked him. Oh, and Andy Serkis was fun.
The humor is good, but unfortunately, I felt like the other five Avengers had a been-there-done-that feel. A lot of stuff felt like set up for Civil War and other shit down the road. I also don't see the point of the mid-credits scene. The action is hit and miss, with the best segment actually being the setpiece in Seoul. I just felt like the film could've been more though at this time.
GOTG is an average film. Age of Ultron is damned near comic book movie perfection.
I know it's cool to be contrarian these days, but you look silly saying this movie is in any way worse than Avengers 1, and below GOTG (which is clearly below Avengers 1).
This film is extraordinarily cohesive. Yes they overdue the jokes, but that's what Marvel is. It's supposed to be like that.
There is real struggle. There is an excellent villian. Yeah his plan is silly but we're talking about a series where a man was able to build a suit of armor in the middle east, a series containing...a god, and a man that talks to and controls ants.
Avengers 1, Loki was... laughable. The thrust of that film was finally seeing characters we've grown up with on screen together, for the first time.
GOTG had arguably worse humor than Avengers 1, worse "action" scenes, a wack leading lady (Scarlett > Zoe), a fucking god awful rendition of The Accuser, and Drax was played by Bautista. Fucking BAUTISTA. Made a mockery of Drax. Groot was played as a lovable giant, but that couldn't be further from his character.
That said, GOTG worked as a film. It was ok, run of the mill. But AoU is simply amazing.
In order:
AoU
Winter Soldier
Avengers 1
Iron Man
Guardians
Iron Man 2
Thor 1
Iron Man 3
Thor 2

I think I must like origin stories because I liked the 'getting the team together' story in Avengers 1 more than 'the gang is all here' in AoU.
The antagonist just felt like a retread of Avengers 1.
Loki being all arrogant but ultimately not that powerful + chitauri cannon fodder flying around; ultron being all arrogant but ultimately not that powerful and mini ultrons/robot cannon fodder flying around
There was one surprise to me though maybe I should have expected it:
I thought they were going for the more obvious Hawkeye drama and did not expect Quicksilver to be immediately killed as a sacrifice after only one movie.
About trailers, I saw it in 2D non-IMAX and didn't get Star Wars. The Jurassic Park and Tomorrowland trailers also seemed old, and we didn't even get the dramatic Mad Max trailer with the Verdi Requiem and Carmina Burana music.
I don't go to movies at all anymore but I just caught up on Agents of Shield and I loved how they tied it into the movie. May have to go see this after all.

I thought Ultron got a helluva lot closer to achieving his goals than Loki ever did.
A city sized meteor within the earth's atmosphere was a great puzzle for them to solve, especially since they insisted on doing so in a way that minimized the impact as much as possible.

I never felt any struggle or tension (partly because they were alway joking around) and the villian was Thor 2-levels of boredom. If his name was not in the title I would forget him in a few months (just like the villian in Thor 2).
Yeah his plan is silly but we're talking about a series where a man was able to build a suit of armor in the middle east, a series containing...a god, and a man that talks to and controls ants.
just got back. loved most of it, still digesting it.
Big positives:
- direction and cinematography was brilliant and so much better than the first film.
- The twins and Vision were amazing
- The team's
scarlet witch manipulation, particularly Black Widow's. JULIE FUCKIN DELPY RED ROOM HOLY SHIT GIVE ME THIS FILM
iffy:
Hulk and BW romance. I went in expecting it to be convincing and charming but it felt forced and awkward. the two have good chemistry but it just felt inserted, even with the special relationship hinted at in the original
Hawkeye's wife and kids. I think this is more annoyance that Mockingbird's relationship with him and appearance in the films just flatlined.
Quicksilver dying. this being comics and all I assume (and hope) he comes back at some point but ugh, I want to spend more time with him NOW
This was a Marvel movie... for better and for worse.
The flaws I just couldn't get past were the horrific makeup/design of Vision. So he's just a dude with red face paint? Execution was awful.
Those lips on Ultron? Terrible. His quick banter really fits in with the Avengers... which is really confusing because he's supposed to stand out as a villian, no?
The movie itself was definitely enjoyable and it also has all the good parts that all Marvel movies have, but man, after so many movies you would think Marvel would learn how to do a proper villian... another wasted villian with convoluted goals/plans and terrible execution
This movie had definite eye-candy......and I'm not talking about all the CGI effects and action sequences. I'm talking about Claudia Kim (Soo Hyun), the Korean model/actress that plays Dr. Helen Cho.

Well he's supposed to be all the bad parts of Stark, so he maintains the wit while also being ruthless. In the comics, he is more like Pym because Pym created him. Here, he is more like Tony because Tony created him. Makes sense given the nature of the character.

Same trailers we got, along with that Pixar emotions movie and The Minions. Jurassic park was the old one roo - opening with the water dinosaur jumping the shark. Was disappointed not to get Star Wars, would have been epic on the big screen.
If any UK cinemas are showing the SW trailer I'd be tempted to go and watch a second time.
I don't suppose there are any Blacklist fans in the thread? I had one hell of a time trying not to think about Red every time Ultron opened his mouth lol.
I liked it well enough, I'm hoping that the 30 minutes worth of scenes Joss claims he cut out of the theatrical release make it to the blu-ray release.
I disagree about Guardians of the Galaxy -- I'd put that as one of my favorite Marvel movies, maybe even #1, and Age of Ultron perhaps below one of the Captain America movies. I'm guessing this comes down to personal taste and some people may feel strongly one way or another.
*edit* I forgot to mention, seizure warning. I don't remember this from previous Marvel movies besides the opening animated Marvel comic thing, but there was a computer scene or two with REALLY fast fullscreen images flashing when data was being processed.
Overall: I enjoyed the movie, but my faith in Marvel has been shaken a tiny bit. The characters are still fun, but things felt disjointed. Ultron was unexpectedly one of the most entertaining parts.
In particular, I kept feeling like lines and scenes in the first half were oddly clipped and edited. I can't remember which scene, but I think one of the Avengers was talking to a woman, and it was some sort of important or emotional moment, and the scene ended almost mid-sentence with a cut to black or another scene.
Even had the editing been smoother, I think this movie may have been a bunch of flashy scenes with Avengers doing flashy things, rather than a bunch of scenes that fit together into a story. One might say that of many Marvel movies, but I do not remember it being true to this extent. Granted, I still LIKE the various characters, and they have their chemistry, and they are fun to watch though Thor's accent felt a little forced or sloppy this time.
Again maybe this was true of previous Marvel and Avengers movies, but a couple of moments felt particularly contrived. There were also some slow, emotional moments that kind of clashed with the frantic pace of the rest of the movie instead of pleasantly contrasting. Hawkeye outright tells another character that nothing really makes sense, but the movie still tries to keep things sort of grounded instead of completely rolling with it.
There were a good many jokes, and even with a reasonable crowd late on opening night, some lines didn't seem to get a reaction. I had trouble even understanding some dialogue -- someone fake-coughing a joke, or someone yelling a joke in a fight and being overwhelmed by noise, that sort of thing.
On to the positive parts, I might have expected Ultron to be dramatic and dry like Bane. Instead he turned out to be randomly wisecracking and that was fun. Black Widow showed a bit of emotion and character depth instead of just being a pretty face. There was at least one case where I did not expect what happened in the plot. I thought Scarlet Witch's actress worked well, and the not-magic rendering was cool. Seeing the Avengers together doing things, and hearing the Avengers theme, were both fun.
Sony told the truth and there was no post-credits scene, only a mid-credits scene.
That may sound like a lot of negatives and not many positives, but I still enjoyed it for what it was. More comments are spoilered.
Someone suggested the coughing joke was "testosterone", when Tony Stark and Thor were trying to outdo each other at the party.
Black Widow's history was touching. Did I understand the implication correctly and her ovaries were completely removed to try to make her more of a heartless killing machine?
I think the Hawkeye misdirection was actually pretty well done. They set everything up so you feel bad for him and he's all prepared to die dramatically. I didn't expect Quicksilver to be introduced and suddenly killed in the same movie. He was a cool guy.
Ultron was weirdly religious with the church symbolism, the mention of God and Noah, and so forth.
I had probably heard the name "Vision" mentioned but didn't know much else. I was pretty surprised by that character. I instantly thought they looked like a member of the Blue Man Group, but in red. My theater seemed to like them lifting the hammer, which was a big deal. Having an otherworldly android-esque character who was somehow moral, worthy, and/or "good" contrasted well with Ultron.
Two of the most contrived moments I mentioned earlier were Black Widow's captivity and Thor's bath.
Black Widow falls out of the sky but somehow survives, presumably caught by an Ultron drone. She then gets threatened by Ultron who wants to show off...by destroying one of his suits with a better suit, and then locking her in a cell. Ultron then apparently leaves the cell and the entire facility unguarded for Banner to sneak in and shoot the door open. Maybe he shot a robot or two with a laser, but Banner isn't usually known for using a gun well.
Thor's case in particular seemed abrupt. Thor needs answers about his dream. He talks to the professor from a Thor movie, who happens to know about a magical pool, which happens to let you revisit visions. Thor jumps in it, sees a different part of his vision, and jumps back to the action. It was funny seeing Thor in a hoodie, but the section felt a bit shoehorned to me.
One thing I didn't fully understand was Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's motivation. Their parents were killed by a bomb from whom? In what war? Would Tony Stark have even been old enough to have been involved with the weapons for that war? I guess he could have been in his 20's and already in the company business.
Well he's supposed to be all the bad parts of Stark, so he maintains the wit while also being ruthless. In the comics, he is more like Pym because Pym created him. Here, he is more like Tony because Tony created him. Makes sense given the nature of the character.
This makes some sense but maybe part was cute from the movie about Ultron:
I don't think Tony's brain waves were even hinted at, so I'm not aware of an in-movie explanation as to why Ultron has part of Tony's personality. The current cut of the movie just seems to show Tony and Bruce attempting to interface with existing software.

Yeah people, stop posting opinions that don't agree with Birdman15! You will look silly if you don't agree with him! Before you post, please check if your opinion is at least reasonably close to Birdman15, and if it isn't, please chance it or refrain from posting. Thanks for your cooperation!
Prior to the film's release, there was that quote from Whedon about there being a scene that was intended for Captain Marvel that was changed to Scarlet Witch at the last minute. I'm willing to bet it's the
very last shot where the "Cap Avengers" are together. Whedon said it was "a shot where a character flies in for a signature moment" and they changed because they didn't think it'd be a proper introduction.
This makes some sense but maybe part was cute from the movie about Ultron:

They don't do it directly for whatever reason, but through dialog, interactions, and just the way the character is portrayed, it is clear that they are going for the same idea of
Ultron being like a super-powered child influenced by his father/creator.
Even if the origin isn't perfect, the idea around the character's motivation and influences are still intact.
