Place your bets: Age of Ultron vs The Force Awakens

$1B is going to happen. I don't see how Age of Ultron misses that number given what we already have.

Early signs are pointing to a huge Chinese gross. Very likely over $200M. Perhaps in excess of $250M. The first Avengers only made $86M there. South Korea is going to add $50-70M on top of what the first film made. That's an additional $165-235M towards the overseas gross without even factoring in big increases in the rest of Asia and Latin America.

The first Avengers made $890M overseas. Age of Ultron only needs a 12% bump to hit $1B.

Seems more likely to be between 1.1-1.2 billion OS with what we have.

Don't think Star Wars can win. Has a chance domestically.

After seeing AOU I can honestly say that there is zero chance of Force Awakens being as bad.

Ignoring the subjectivity of that (RT and Metacritic scores indicate that it is in line with the last film), last year's #1 earner was Transformers 4. What does quality have to do with box office?

The best film of the year will end up being something that makes like 1/20th what either of these films will make.

Star Wars is easily going to do 1 bil plus overseas.

AoU will get 1.8 bil worldwide, Star Wars will do 2.2 bil worldwide.

I don't think that's guaranteed. This has been a dormant franchise for 10 years and it's hard to say where its popularity lies in a lot of the expanding markets since then. Even in the years the prequels came out, it wasn't necessarily the highest overseas earner too. Granted, the Force Awakens shouldn't be as bad as those.

I liked AOU well enough but if Force Awakens is the worse movie ill be shocked, and Im not really a big Star Wars fan

Not sure which of the two will make the most money, either way Disney wins lmao

I think Star Wars is going to be a much better film.

But I think Avengers has a broader appeal, especially internationally.

I think SW will barely do better domestically but Avengers will beat it internationally.

Changing gears, why do people care which film makes more money at the box office? As long as the movie makes enough to justify a sequel isn't that enough?

I find it funny too, especially since they are both owned by Disney and will see movies for the foreseeable future.

Avengers will probably make more due to Marvels success and the hype behind The first Avengers.

I take it a lot in this thread are going to be switching to team Star Wars now after Avengers opening weekend fell short of expectations (tracking was at 230 mil, full estimate for weekend is 189-190 mil) and is unlikely to get near 500 mil now.

Avengers will be the better film, Star Wars will end with more money.

Why? There's almost never a good genuine intent behind these kinds of questions.

Only mature and responsible adults support Star Wars, right?

Not my point at all, Jesus.

I'm 32, for most people my age Star Wars is it. I can't fathom at all even thinking AOU can beat it at the box office. Like I said I'm just curious. There isn't some malicious intent behind it.

Not that I think kids don't like Star Wars or anything, but you should recognize that you are well above the average moviegoer age. I'm about the same age, but we are no longer the biggest demo for films.

Surprise Motherfuckers!!!

I doubt star wars will even beat the dark knight rises. They really fucked up the brand with the last three movies. Depends on if the First move is good or not.
Star wars has had its day.

Yeah I do realize this. That's why I asked. 20 something kids obviously love super hero films. I do too but like I said I would never imagine it to be bigger then a Star Wars film but again I'm older.

Exactly. I run the movies now, guys. The motion pictures!

Star wars has had its day.

Avengers might not beat The Dark Knight Rises. It all depends on how it's legs are from here on out. After those opening weekend numbers, if it plays out like Iron Man 3 did, it could finish in the same ballpark as The Dark Knight Rises.

Box office, AOU, for the better movie I can say without even seeing Star Wars, it will be the better movie, AOU is a pile of shit..

The first Avemger movie is the 3rd highest grossing film of all time. And no, neither of the 2 films above it are Star Wars films.

Update - AoU $874,989,000 WW with China yet to contribute.

Wow-holy shit.

I'll be honest I have no clue. I loved AOU and I can't wait for Star Wars so either way I'm thrilled with the movies and Disney is pleased as punch. We all win.

Avengers will be a distant 3rd behind Star Wars and Jurassic Park. This is such a joke debate

Distant third behind JW??? Eehhhhhhhhh.......

I mean, I LOVE Jurassic Park and am beyond hyped for Jurassic World...but..what?

JP was huge back in the day and fans are hungry

You are a crazy person.

The sequels made less money as after each. Fans are hungry but Marvel/Star Wars fans outweigh them tremendously. Mocking Jay Part II will pretty much make more considering the first two films made more than Jurassic Park and the fans for The Hunger Games are still in the teenage demographic.

Who said Star Wars is going to tank?

JW is going to lose to Ant-Man.

I still want to know what you are smoking.

Yea I'll say the only other movies that will even touch those 2 will be Jurassic World and the dark horse Fast 7

and even then, the drop off in payout will be huge before those 2 are even close

I dont think JP will make the splash the original did. CGI is common place now. The plot will no doubt be a repeat. Unless they do a planet of the apes ending. Im sure itll be financially successful but it wont come near star wars or avengers.

The people posting the box office for the Jurassic park sequels made me laugh
Why? You said people are thirsting for a new one
.

In 48 hours from now I will be accepting your apologies....

2015 is the year that proves that the era of Comic Book/Marvel blockbusters still does not hold a candle to the Spielberg/Lucas era blockbuster franchises.

Marvel Studios ain't got shit on Amblin/Lucasfilm. The original champs, and will be the reigning champs.

If the reviews come out for TFA and they're "not shit like the Prequels" it'll do fucking ridiculous numbers.

Thank You Cheebo. I have been saying this for awhile now and these people just don't understand.

You can't compare a Marvel movie which is literally just a TV movie with a somewhat bigger budget to the kinds of films we got in the late 70s-through the 80s-to the early 90s. Get serious. Star Wars, Jurassic World, even stuff like Mad Max are on an entirely different level from kids stuff like age of ultron which is more akin to something like Stuart Little. Now that those big true Hollywood movies are making a comeback I trust people are going to see the difference and I hope in the future we don't get anymore embarrassing (and frankly offensive) comparisons between Marvel Studios "films" and real blockbusters.

The numbers JW is pulling makes it incredibly clear the general audience has been starving for a more "classic" style blockbuster in the vein of the Amblin/Lucasfilm output of the 80's and early 90's.

Star Wars (especially being a sequel with the original cast) is going to benefit as well from this.

I am surprised it has honestly taking this long for studios to realize this.
