Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Market our game to unlock new stretch goals!
That's just kickstarter 101. I'm happy they are doing it well, even though I'll not partake in any of the shenanigans. More budget = better game.

The lack of handheld versions, be it Vita or n3DS, have deflated most of my hype :(
It's a good thing. They are making one game, on UE4, for high-end platforms that can run it well. Rather than spreading themselves too thin.

Platform stretch goals will actually erode my confidence a bit.

I wasn't there, but a friend of mine who attended the tech panel for Xrd at GDC told me that they said their engine wouldn't really work very well with a big Action/Adventure game or RPG. I'm guessing the reason why it looks so good is that they're only dealing with small stages and 2 characters at a time.
Probably something similar to what's always been the case with fighting games: because they're small arenas with just two, maybe four characters they can push visuals way further than stuff like platformers or action games, never mind full on open world titles.

Though part of the issue is that specific rendering style. I guess fewer "frames" and likely lower detail models will help there though.

Just said on Twitch that there's going to be a backer survey very early on to try and get the 2.5d style just right for the backers. Name dropping GGX like crazy. :p

This is very pleasing to hear. Can't wait to back my Limited Ed.
I know this game could end up looking really amazing with UE4 and if they can nail the 2.5D just right it's definitely going to be a looker.

I'm in, though I need to consider if I'm crazy enough to go up a tier and get that art book as well.

As for MN9...well, that's what can happen when you back something on Kickstarter. You just have to believe the people making the game are dedicated to what they are providing to backers and future customers. In this case, I think it'll turn out just fine.

Honestly, dream, this may be the carniest thing I've ever seen in video games. It boils down to "market our game to unlock more incentives to give us money."

It'll probably go largely unchecked because there's seemingly this weird drive in gamers to think they're a part of a "team" or "good cause", especially when it comes to supporting these nostalgia projects. The reality is they're just being used as pawns for marketing.

It is kind of ridiculous. Stretch goals in their original form are somewhat "scummy" because it's like a big combination of FOMO, money-as-"xp", and "team effort" (as you say). The comic/vine/tweet/comic/etc. thing is something that should be organic but of course marketers are always looking for new ways to exploit. It's slightly depressing that they feel the need to incentivize these things and "lock" stuff behind it.

Everything about this is incredible, except the horrific animeish looking artstyle, but I'll live.

More music by Michiru Yamane, I can't wait.

I'm in.

Hmm... I love Castlevania but I'm really not feeling the art style at all in the concept art. Plus, there is a shockingly little amount to go on here, especially when compared to the full video demo that Yooka Laylee put out.

Sorry Iga, gonna have to pass for now. Maybe they'll update the kickstarter with more content later?

How much did Shovel Knight cost to make?

They asked for 75k and got about 310k. However that game was clearly aiming for NES style graphics. If this game were to be full 2d, I think everybody would be expecting 16 bit or higher which would obviously be more expensive.

Really, really happy with this. They also explain why there isn't prototype shown at the moment. Sounds like Iga has had a really rough time recently :(

I'm just glad that we finally get play one of these on a proper freaking screen finally. It's been 18 years since we were last able to.

Dracula X Chronicles was one of the ugliest games I've ever played. The polygon counts are PSX quality, the textures look like oatmeal, the animations are hilariously bad, and to top it all off it runs at 30 fps. What's up with this retconning it into being a good looking PSP game? Even at the time of its release it was widely criticized for its graphics. Compared to 2.5D games on the PSP such as Mega Man Powered Up/Maverick Hunter X/Ultimate Ghost & Goblins, or even the Prinny games, it doesn't even look like it belongs on the same system.

I should have been more specific but I found that Drac X did a good job translating the Castlevania style to 3D. The game sure wasn't a technical wonder but I think artistically it's a good reference on how Bloodstained could work.

Easily some of the most carny moves I've ever seen, this entire project. Absolutely atrocious and I believe Heel and Dream are right on expecting a "Digital Delivery Fee" - I would not be surprised in the least to see that liberty taken with this fanbase.
So you're saying that instead of Igavania this is more like Wrestlevania?

David Hayter as a stretch goal. Hah. Hah. Hah. Get it?
I'm presuming that was him on the rack, screaming?

I'll support this.

Shovel Knight got $311k from Kickstarter, they used their own money as well, and they were basically broke & racking up debt for about a half year after the KS funds ran out and before they finished up.
And that's for a retro looking game, imagine how much a super detailed 2D game like a Castlevania would cost without the option to reuse assets from a 10 year old game.

And there goes any and all of my woes of it being 3D, straight out the window. It's gonna look super hot isn't it?

Damn, that Cursed Orphan track is fucking awesome!

Yep, so many layers of awesome.

Because he has a fantastic and iconic voice.

Well, we all have different...wants, I suppose.

So you're saying that instead of Igavania this is more like Wrestlevania?

Terrifying how Wrestlevania is just one letter away from The Grandaddy Of Them All!

I will say it's interesting how Iga has managed to tie his own buyers into the marketing as heavily as he did.

Does anyone know if his company is good at managing money? All I ever hear of with most KS projects is people ran out of money.

I was super happy with getting a new Igavania every year or two in the GBA/DS years... it's been unpleasant to no longer have new ones since then. I hope this is the start of a new era of proliferation for Igavanias.

... in for $100. I'll upgrade if it turns out they struggle to reach a stretch goal or something.

Didn't know all that extra info. Thanks for the info and that makes me extra happy Shovel Knight has been a success.

About GGXrd, i see two problems:

_I'm pretty sure it went through tones and tones of R&D to find the way to do that, it's not gonna be that easy.

_It's great for an anime look. It's not really organic. Now, if that game is meant to look as the animeish Castlevania on DS, why not. But again it would be a sad error cause now that you make your game for fans and with their money, you don't have to make your game so it's compatible with modern markets (and by that i mean having cosplay compatible characters with fancy outfits and pretty magics with flowers in it, which is what you see in that concept art)

Honest question - why? I don't understand the love that dude gets. He's a goddamn cornball and shows no range. Just my opinion, however.

I'm curious on this as well. Back in MGS1 & 2, his voice work as snake was absolutely iconic (though it got really grating in 3 and 4 personally), but I don't even know what he's capable of as a voice actor past sounding like the Marlboro Man that took a nightstick to the throat.

I think the good thing with Kickstarter is that you can reach out to the most dedicated fans and get more funding than you would have otherwise. Honestly, I can understand the perspective of publishers choosing a low risk approach when development costs have increased so much and a relatively large number of sales might not just cut it today. I feel like this is the only way a game like this and Yooka-Laylee can exist in this day and age.

What the fuck is going on with this Kickstarter? I look at it 20 minutes ago and it was at $172k, now it's at $242k? Is this normal? How did it make $70k in 20 minutes?

Well, here we have it. I will admit, I am disappointed to learn it's 2.5D but I understand that modern resolutions and budgets tend to make it difficult to do otherwise. Inticreates handling dev duties after the bland look MN9 ultimately came to embody is likewise something that gives me pause.

Much worse is the lack of Ayami Kojima. This art they have instead is doing nothing for me. A generic, big titted anime girl in a gothic lolita fetish costume is not what I wanted. The artist's drafting style is too obviously generic anime rather than influenced by classical Western composition and the shading style is digital painting trying to look like water colors rather than going for the dark and somber oil painting look that made Symphony and its progeny feel so regal and ancient. These new characters look like they belong in a third rate modern jRPG rather than the Baroque and Medieval figures like Alucard and Simon everyone remembers best.

All that said, I'm still on board even if my enthusiasm is dented. At least it doesn't appear to be Freemium or F2P focused. And if nothing else, it's absolutely great to have Iga back in the saddle. It's been far too long.
