Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Anoregon

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I want to donate for the physical version, but I have never donated for a KS before. Will my copy get shipped to México?

They generally ship anywhere, but have an additional charge for international shipping.

Wouldn't the level be from one of his previous games? I really don't know if he can do that if that is the case

It means an 8/16 bit style level, not an actual level from an earlier game.

The KS page says it'll ship to anywhere in the world

Oh, no, that's not what it means. It's just an 8/16bit section of the castle.

I think he said it would be an extra stage in a 16bit art style.
Oh OK,that would be cool

But we see here that the average figurative donor to Bloodstained is more than willing pay $78 for this game on faith alone. It's a weird phenomenon.

The thirst is real, we've waited too long and I personally feel the tiers are pretty fair. I think I mentioned earlier in the thread I ended up pledging $200 less than I expected to for the package I wanted.

Honestly, much as I'd like a physical copy of the game, the music is the driving factor behind my backing amount. The physical copy of the soundtrack is what I'm in for.

a-and maybe even the signed soundtrack? It's kinda tempting...

I personally feel my money is safe with this project, if you do too and that's what you want, why not go for it if you can afford it?

A retro level? wouldn't this get them in trouble with Konami?

Really depends on how it's done.

The worst thing about this kickstarter is how long they take to update things. Youtube has had 10k+ subscribers since early yesterday and it's still not on the "achievements".

It's funny you say that, because I'm getting the same impression from this Miriam art.

To me her expression gives off the feeling of innocence which seems to fit her back story pretty well.

I'm not absolutely in love with her character design but I think it fits the background and setting well.

Turning Alucard into a jobber just to make Sonia seem cooler was super lame though.

I hate it when games/whatever do that. Have the new character beat/clown an old one as a way of making them look better.

Backer average is like 70 bucks

Dat limited retail swag

Hate that this will be used as a reason to make that kind of thing more common. I would pay the same money after a kickstarter for the physical version as well.

I just really hate super limited things. It just favors people who like to resell and not people who just like to own.

It is a bit frustrating, but so far the updates seem to be on a once-per-day (max) schedule. When I subscribed to the Youtube channel yesterday around this time, it was still a hundred or two subscribers shy from 10k. So maybe no new marks were reached before their scheduled update time?

I imagine we'll see several goals surpassed today, including a new stretch goal, very soon. :)

Wow, 2 million already?

Looking forward to this though. I need a new 2D Castlevania(-like) game and we all know Konami isn't going to give it to us.

Yeah, the average pledge for this is $78. Pretty nuts.

That's due to the reward structure. They locked a lot of stuff away at $100+. Most KS campaigns can't get away with that but when you're Castlevania, things are different.

Overall the KS is so deep, detailed, and smartly structured. There are a million hooks to keep backers engaged for the entire campaign. Hiring an American marketing firm with KS expertise was no doubt expensive, but it's clearly paying off. And what a project to have on your resume -- Fangamer is making a name for themselves here too.

Oh crap... I just realized... Fangamer is making the physical backer goodies, right?

Fangamer is AMAZING. If they're making the physical rewards then we're in for a huge treat.

To everyone talking about how Miriam's expressions convey her personality to you, I'd like to remind you that our last outing involved a female protagonist who literally had all the emotions torn out of her.

It's funny you say that, because I'm getting the same impression from this Miriam art.

This is the one thing I'm worried about. Shanoa's design and abilities were super rad, but her going the entire game without her emotions/memories made her personality super dull. The fact that Miriam also starts the game with amnesia just like Shanoa doesn't fill me with confidence.

I just hope she doesn't end up like other Japanese female leads in games that seem designed to be cool and stoic, but instead end up in execution as dull, emotionless and monotone, like Shanoa, Lightning and Samus (in Other M).

This makes me very happy. But although I like the character designs, the crystal/rose patterns look like cheap tattoos... still, I'm sure this'll be great. I've been jonesin' for an igavania (lol) for a while now.

What time is it for the folks running this Kickstarter? I need to know the new stretch goal :C

Agreed, still not convinced on the glass stuff, but she looks amazing. Maybe in-game it'll look better, we'll see.

If it doesn't, hopefully some alt costume either removes the things or covers them, so that should be fine for further playthroughs.

You're also going to need dudes who know their way around the tech regardless, and that'll take time.

I think people need to temper expectations. There is no way this is going to look like GGXrd no matter what they say they're aiming for.

It could look like the new Shantae...

EDIT: Here

EDIT2: Is this 2D or 2.5D??? Now I dunno...

Christ, that Shantae shot is horrendous. Then again the "gameplay" concept looks horrible on this as well so I guess shit's just gonna be shit. Hopefully that Shantae screen is just conceptual...

I think these are from the kickstarter campaign.

Anyway, I don't find the bad at all.

I think Shantae looks great. Stylistically though, it's not a good fit for a Castlevania spiritual successor. Not saying that particular team couldn't pull it off though.

yeah i was kidding haha
i have 0 expectations that this will look anywhere near as good as guilty gear

...which is a slight bummer

It does, but I just hate these tattoos, man. Shanoa's looked awesome, but Miriam and Gebel's just look dumb to me. They're garish and they clash with the sleekness of the overall character art.

2D character art with 3D levels.

Really bummed they didnt hit their full campaign goals. I wonder if they could have gotten the 1.3mil if they were further from MN9 or later on. (Seems like KS games are blowing up left and right now)

Considering it's 3D graphics, it'd be an interesting touch if the tattoos had weird visual effects and animations as you play through the game. (Maybe by the end Miriam gets fully consumed by her tattoos?)

That could be interesting, but it's the look of the tattoos themselves that are offputting to me. Like, when I hear "magi-crystal curse" I think of something like this:

Not really bright rose flower tattoos,

Her artwork seems to imply that this will happen at one point or another.

Probably, the method of stopping the spread isn't perfect, and she'll need Johannes' help to fix it.

Classic mode sounds great!

Visible next in your Crystal Lens is one of our personal favorites: Classic Mode. This is a cool one, especially if you've been playing action platformers since controllers had two buttons: In Classic Mode, existing assets and screens from the game will be rearranged linearly, to reward timing and survival instead of backtracking and exploration.

IGA and company are still too early in the planning process to promise anything, but right now he's envisioning six punishing stages. In grand classic platformer fashion, you'll be weaker and the enemies will be stronger, and forget about saving yourself by grinding—no RPG elements here.

If you've always preferred your castles punishingly difficult, straightforward, and scrolling from left to right, this is the stretch goal for you.

Looks like only 13 achievements so still short of the diamond lens. Honestly think they should have started blocking achievements behind it now since it's going to take a while to get the next two.

They posted an update stating the Diamond Lens will be reworked to something else because all the castle stretch goals have been revealed essentially making it worthless. I hope it's something worthwhile, otherwise we'll have to rely on somehow obtaining enough backer achievements to see the dungeon stretch goals unless funding continues at a quick pace.

We probably shouldn't have doubted you. Once upon a time, back before you shattered our Kickstarter goal in one day, we thought you'd be getting the Diamond Lens right about now, with plenty of castle stretch goals still to unlock.

Instead, because you are amazing, you've ALREADY hit the bottom of the castle. Once you unlock the Retro Level and Classic Mode it'll just be you and the locked door to the castle dungeon, where some very big stretch goals—ones we only dreamed of including—lie in wait.

That means your Diamond Lens, which you are about to lock, is worthless: you've already seen the Castle goals.

If you had to destroy our carefully planned backer achievement system, we're glad you did it like this.

As a reward, then, you've earned five bonus achievements, effective immediately. That brings you within two of the Malevolent Medal, and 12 away from unlocking the Basement Key that will let you collect all the stretch goals you're about to start earning.

Since you didn't really get a chance to use it, we've also asked pixel-IGA's personal jeweler to transmute your Diamond Lens into a Diamond Loupe, which will magnify your view of the castle room in which you find yourself. It should only take a few days, so we'll explain its new powers as soon as it's ready...

Not really bright rose flower tattoos,

On the one hand I like the stained glass motif a bit more than actual crystals, but I'd actually agree that the name is a bit off of what I expect.

Ah. I wish they just stuck with the original plan and didn't make all the achievements so high instead of just showing off the next few every step.

Also it bugs the hell out of me that the castle has grown by adding more floors and achievements to the bottom instead of building up with adding things to the top. Going down should have been just for the dungeon imo.
