As much as I love the story, characters, and overall atmosphere of the Witcher games they've have always had such unforgivably shitty combat that I have very little faith I'll find enjoyment in this latest Witcher game as well as Cyberpunk whenever it comes out.

I thought that is well known? People hype the game too much imo, adjust your expectation and I think you'll enjoy it. At least for the lore, as I think it's excellent.

Anyway,
Unity > Black flag

That's certainly a different take on things.

I think if that did happen we'd have 3 consoles on similar playing fields with regards to spec , type of games etc.

I remember the dreamcast wowing me with the pretty much arcade experience in my own home for the first time.

Sega always seemed to be pushing the spec wars (e.g game gear vs gameboy) and I can't see that having changed if they were still in the hardware race

Yeah, my thinking is for two reasons:

First, that SEGA pushed console performance, but were also not afraid to do cool shit even if it didn't push console specs (like VMUs, which never got a chance to get fleshed out, sadly). I think they would have gotten to motion controls in time. We'd get that "best of both worlds" combination of specs + innovation in consoles that I so long for.

Second, that if I am going to have one company working at full capacity to develop their first-party games (none of this half-assed stuff we've seen from a dying SEGA the past few years), I personally prefer Sonic, Sonic and All-Stars Racing, NiGHTS, Shining Force, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, Streets of Rage, Virtua Fighter, and by God maybe even Ristar and Comix Zone sequels/series over Mario, DK, Smash, Kart, Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, Kirby, Xenoblade, and Yoshi.

I love some of those Nintendo series, don't get me wrong, but most of those series had their best games on the SNES or N64, so I could just play those consoles (which I do quite a bit) in my SEGA/Sony/Microsoft future.

For me, Heavy Rain is the second best game last gen after Forza Horizon. I think there should be more linear cinematic games like it.

I don't like the pikmin games, I even got 3 for free and tired very hard to enjoy it but I just dont like the mechanics. The art style and music is charming however.

I think more games could stand to benefit from preventing the player from moving while shooting. Older games like RE4 and MGS3 have a much better pacing to combat because if you want to start aiming your weapon, you need to be committed to your positioning. This leads to an interesting balance between distinct "Run" and "Gun", whereas in most games it all just blends together as a singular bland "Run and Gun".

Don't get me wrong, both styles can be done well or done poorly, I'm just getting tired that seemingly *every* action game with a gun decides to use the same set of shooter mechanics.

This mostly comes from planning, pattern recognition, and positioning being verboten in those systems rather than run and gun. Real run and gun is scaaaaaaaaaaaaaary so they hafta nerf it so running and gunning wins.

The Xbox One looks beautiful. It looks insanely sleek and modern sitting in my TV unit. I love looking at it.
Too bad I haven't used it yet this year lol.

Mass Effect 3 ending wasn't bad
Mortal Kombat's art style is awful
Can't get through Witcher 2 cause it's boring
Can't get through DA:O cause it's boring
Uncharted has bad gunplay and gameplay
Oblivion was better than Morrowind and Skyrim
TES is more interesting than Fallout
I don't like GTA
Darksiders 2's loot system was the reason I kept playing
Circle of the Moon > Symphony of the Night
Connor in AC3 was a great character
PS4 controller is atrocious
Bioshock played badly (great otherwise, though)
Dishonored was meh
Back in the day, I didn't think the GC Metroid games looked good
Camilla Luddington voice acting as Lara Croft is horrible: It's fake and overdone and I don't buy her accidentally sexy yet frail British voice for a second. Ugh.
Mass Effect's combat gameplay is really meh
Gone Home was great (don't know how controversial that is now, though)
Heavy rain was awesome

Feels good to get that off my chest!

Just a side note, the fact that this thread can still survive up to this day from 2012 is certainly my biggest accomplishment in GAF, hahaha.

Well, if there's one thing common with people here, it's that everyone has an opinion or two that could be considered unpopular, and everyone is dying to let other people know about these opinions lol

I don't know if I'd rank it that high, but I fucking loved it, 'warts and all' as I said numerous times around its release.

I too would be all for more games like it (and in some ways, what Telltale are doing with their adventure games fulfil that niche).

Stacking is Double Fine's best work, and probably the best stealth game ever (Mask of the Ninja may pip it).

Grand Theft Auto 5 is terrible imo. Spent 5 hours in it and came away less then impressed. The gameplay was too popamole for my taste. Driving was a bit better, the music at least made that enjoyable.

Couldn't get into the story at all. I understand that this game is supposed to be a parody, but man the portrayal of the hood just felt forced. It was so unbearable I had to turn the game off. Same thing happened with San Andreas.

I'm just starting to think these bigger budget games aren't for me anymore.

Yes, I played all three ME games. I kind of liked the % based hit chance in the first one for some reason, felt right. The two others were just ok cover based TPS games.
And I thought of ME3's ending as that it's the journey that matters. In the end the choices were absolute, but what mattered is what you created. The people you saved still survived etc. I can see how it was disappointing in terms of there not being 37 different endings, but I guess I liked the rest of the endings. I still felt good about the people I saved who got to see a Reaper-less future.

While I think his games are great, Hideki Kamiya is an asshole and I kinda of feel like a slimeball for supporting him and his games. I justify buying them because while he may be an asshole (and he is) the other people who worked with him seem decent enough and the games are usually good. Worst part about him is the way dude treats his fans on twitter. Most of them either tell him how awesome he and his games are or ask an innocent question about a game and he calls them idiots and retards and blocks him. Fuck off Kamiya. You don't treat people who helped support you like that.

-he always responds positively to people who say they like his games
-he advertises his twilog every day and people still don't bother to check it. you cant say that its unreasonable, as he has to do it for every repeat question so its obviously not that hard to find the answer youre looking for
-he has always unbanned a person if they apologise and asked to be unbanned
-I can think of very few other devs with his status who will take the time to answer everything asked to him

That's not "controversial", that's just wrong.

Kamiya is a nice guy, you know. He's mostly joking around and his honesty is something I really appreciate.

Hell, he might be one of the most awesome game designers out there.

I feel Nintendo would be better off if they left the hardware business all together and focused on becoming solely a game publisher for the PC/PS4/XB1/Mobile. They could instantly become a top publisher.

TellTale Games is an overrated developer. Their game engine is crap and they are constantly getting a ton of money yet they never develop a new engine because so much of the gaming media gives them a huge pass.

Minecraft is boring in my opinion

PSASBR could have been great but Sony cheaped out and took cash grabs. They put no heart in the game.

The Last Guardian is overhyped.

Uncharted 2 was Naughty Dog's best game last gen

Red Dead Redemption was Rockstar's best game last gen

Halo is overrated

I wish another company owned Pokemon rather than Nintendo than maybe fans would actually get a Pokemon MMO and Pokemon Snap 2.

Konami sucks and the best thing about them was their E3 conference.

I can not play games with an auto-attack no matter what. For example I dislike dragon age: origins, Xenoblade, Dota, lol. Personally. I find them very boring.

Yeah I had no problem with the ending either. Not sure why it was such a problem.

If you played the other games you should've known by that point the decisions you make had minimal impact from one game to the next. Also the story itself was so disjointed and relied heavily on deus ex machina to explain big problems.

The first was the best, the second was the worst, and the third was what I expected the second to be from all the hype. Honestly, ME2's story felt really weak and coming off of playing ME1, the story was completely outrageous and implausible.

I like David Cage' games and I wish The Nomad Soul, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy, and Heavy Rain be remastered on the PS4.

I liked Heavy Rain' use of multiple main characters and that I could kill any off and the story would just continue. More games should be like this.

I really dislike everything about the borderlands series aside from finding some of the weapons satisfying. the "wacky" humor in particular is awful and grating.

Agree.

Kinda random, but I got The Witcher 2 during the steam sale and I find its combat deprived of interesting mechanics that aren't complicated and I don't like the linear style of the world. Using the interface has also been annoying for the most part. I stopped after that sea creature boss.

I hate how grinding is now acceptable in every game.

They play to the lowest form of player gratification and for the most part are just there to extend the amount of time a game is played. Case and point CoD, BF4 and Borderlands.

I think that The Last of Us is an incredibly dragged out game full of filler that could have done with about half of it being cut.

If it would have stayed focused it would have been something really special for me, but it really bored me to tears in places.

Getting upset over the fact that Driveclub has yet to release it's free demo version is a massive waste of time. I can't fathom why people act outraged about it when Half life 3 has yet to be released or any other game like that. I can understand getting annoyed but to act like Sony has ripped you off somehow?

Half-Life 3 was never announced by Valve no it said that it's on development. Sony on the other hand had promised a free version of Drive Club but they never fulfilled their promise.

There is a difference.

Splatoon looks and plays terribly and I think the Nintendo fanboys are so desperate to have an exclusive shooter that they ignore all the shortcomings and hail it as amazing.

Gears of War is a franchise that should simply stay dead. I loved the first three but I can't seem to be excited about the new one coming. That might change though.

Halo was my favourite franchise for 10 years... until Halo 4. I love all these audiologs 343i is doing but after FuD and Nightfall (and fucking Halo 4) I can't seem to get excited about Halo anymore. I've always felt Bungie knew how to make it something magic and special, 343i just meh. I don't even know what to say. (that Halo5 MP looks amazing though!)

These two opinions might change. I'm waiting to see what happens next.

---------

Now, more opinions:

Killzone is not a bad franchise at all, just mismanaged by Guerrilla/Sony. I hope it changes soon.

Resistance was a really interesting franchise, shame it's dead.

Fable sucks.

Assassin's Creed used to be great (Ezio trilogy and the first game were AMAZING). Now it's just the cash grab that needs to be released every single year for the sake of it. Shit, I miss the days of the first game. It's not that they're bad games now but I don't have a clue where the story is going, it's so convoluted.

That's what happens in a society where most people think the world owes them something.

It's the same thing with people that complain about the games you get given for FREE on ps plus. If you don't like the games you're given then maybe just buy some.

Except we don't get them for free. They come as part of a subscription we pay for.

I prefer ME1 over 2 and 3 for its RPG feel. I feel like they made the game more action focused and took away from the space exploration RPG that ME1 set for the series.

My controversial opinion: Plus games are not free if you have to pay to get them, and the moment you stop paying they are taken away from you. I know, controversial.
