Fallout 4 - Multiple E3 Gameplay Demos, Releasing November 10th, 2015

Yeah, that's the one thing that disappoints me.... I love dialogue in my RPG and it is obvious they have now left it so you only ever get four options to reply.

Then again, Witcher doesn't tend to give you many replies at once either and can still have good dialogue (it usually gives you 3 - 4 and many times just two replies). But then again, they're playing a set character for Witcher. What they could be doing is that each option you give can open up a seperate set of responses (first option just sets if you want to be a bad guy/good guy/neutral and gives you appropriate responses from that). So... we'll see.

A lot about what Fallout is (especially the new gen fallout) IMO is style. They have a certain aesthetic going.. with the sometimes hokey, but very sobering soundtrack with it's light innocence laid over the horrific and glorified violence. I think they wanted to flesh out this style with voice actors and make them smartasses and give it a more artists touch, which is in contrast with the whole freedom/play your way aspect that the game also pushes. I think minimal options from the player allows them to go with their own style that adds to the Fallout flavor. I don't think Elder Scrolls 6 will follow this direction. And I was right on every count (quite a few of them) in the FO4 reveal thread :P ;)

Plus... voice acting severely (exponentially) limits your dialogue options in a game.

Building your own base is one of those things that is super awesome but I will never ever ever touch and be dissapointed I'm not more into building my own virtual chill shed.

You need to smoke a joint man! Before you know it you'll have 8 hours put into your house

Neither of which I enjoyed in Fallout 3 or Skyrim, both in narrative and role playing scope, so my faith in them doing a complete turn around on Fallout 4 isn't there.

It's more than that though. Bethesda just make a different type of game. And that's fine. But it's not for me, even if I keep getting baited by the possibility it might be.

Did you like New Vegas?

why would you even entertain the thought that bethesda wouldn't make a bethesda game

I'm still trying to process all of this. It's weird, because my initial reaction was I was hyped/excited as fuck. But then at the same time, I felt a wave of disappointment in what I was seeing. Then after all was said and done, I was kind of left with a..uh, wtf was that, feeling?

I just wasn't expecting this game to go the over the top sand box route, with a bunch of crazy whack things to do. As i said before, it reminded me of Dead Rising, Saints Rows, Grand Theft Auto and hell throw in the Sims in there for good measure.

It kind of bothered me when he kept saying "IT JUST WORKS". The whole drag and drop stuff, kind of felt like really dumbed down mechanics. Of course, I don't know how it will play until I play the damn game. So I am by no means judging it fully. But it did kind of worry me how often he kept saying "don't worry, it JUST WORKS". Uh...okay.

SO when I took in everything, it just felt like a really over the top sand box game, as opposed to an immersive post apocalyptic role playing game. And I mean, yeah, Fallout has always had its charm + wit. It was always a funny game. But I just didn't expect what we just saw (which was super over the top and whacky).

I just hope to hell, that the dialogue stuff is actually good, as well as the side missions. I would hate for this game to be like Skyrim, where it's this really massive/gorgeous world. But it's kind of empty, and the side missions aren't that well written. So you are just left with a bunch of whack/over the top mechanics (building stuff, and going crazy with weapons and traversing).

'It just works' is not so great with base building, true. It just works kind of means there's not so many ways to fuck this up, which usually means a simplified system.

Yeah but we can look at stories and main quests they've done before. I mean in my view, the recent record isn't great.

But, they did do Morrowind which had a great story. Also, I think the "Mass Effect" dialogue/camera that people are complaining about for some reason alongside the voice protag will allow for more emotion to be conveyed within the story.

Did you like New Vegas?

Obsidian.

Because having 6-10 options to talk to characters with is way better then 4 two word options that won't be what you actually want to say because the character has a voice now?

Maybe its been a while since i played those games but i don't recall more than 3 or 4 dialog options at any time under the old system and the two word options are likely expanded upon with the actual dialog from the selection. Seems easier to respond with your desired emotion than the old system. Just seems intuitive and serves managing dialog options better.

I can see it being worse for the modding community.

What are the odds of characters being able to voice my character's name if I make Sweet JP?

They will probably have a catch-all name for the MC like Lone Wanderer or the Courier

For regular NPCs you usually only got 3-4 but for someone important it was not uncommon to get a lot of options.

Fallout 3 and Skyrim main quests were kinda meh and there was more focus and fun exploring the world. I'd say that NV has a much more engaging story start to finish, even if the end was kind of ehhh in comparison to some of the other points in the game.

Since no Obsidian, I'm not thinking the main quest line will be all that great and just there to get you to explore the world.

I think having a main character with a more defined history will allow them to make a more compelling storyline.

Thank you! I get the feeling this might change, so good to lock it in just in case I want it.

Yeah. I did the same, it's good that Amazon don't charge until they ship, but they also are giving me free 1st class shipping on this.

LOL PS4 version sold out already

XB1 version is still available

Seriously? I must have got very lucky there. It was in my basket and I managed to get the order through!

Aside from graphics, that looked absolutely fabulous. I'm sold.

I think this game along with MGS V will dominate this year's GOTY awards among media outlets. Sorry, Bloodborne, Ori, The Witcher 3 and other contenders. Ya'll are all excellent games, but are just too niche. You three will have a better shot winning GAF's GOTY.

I also think this game will be a massive commercial success, possibly one of the top 2 or 3 best selling games of 2015. It's clear that Fallout 4 is going to appeal to a very wide audience, from casuals to the hardcore. Most people don't care all that much about a deep, intricate story in a game...no matter how good the writing and questing are.

The voiced protag is a huge killer for me. Maybe they'll give us an option to turn it off? I don't know.

The other additions like base building is nice but not why I play Fallout or Bethesda RPGs so I'm not interested in them right now. Obviously that might change if I play it and enjoy it but if content is locked to building a base I will be pretty disappointed. Even the idea of building a base if very off putting. In games like Fallout you never want to stay in one spot (or atleast that's how I feel). I want to be moving around exploring the world. Being locked to an area isn't too enticing and it's the opposite of how I would approach these games.

It's a nice addition and I'm sure people will have fun and build cool towns so I'm looking forward to some cool things. The plane summon flying thing looks interesting but I actively avoid using fast travel so I'm not really interested in that. The 3rd person shooting looks a lot better. Almost better than first person but there is not enough footage for me to say that with confidence.

The crafting system looks decent but sort of empty. I like how customizable the guns are but is it really going to make that big of a difference aside from visually. The custom armors and the under/over-armor mechanic I think is great adding to the unique-ness of your character if that's what you're going for.

Sorry if this is too rambly sounding but I'm just typing this out not really reading over.
Overall I would say I'm excited for the game as I would be for a Fallout just because I like the way they build their worlds and how it's exploration based.

I'll pick this up and get it regardless but the voiced protag and the "best merchants" in your built towns are definitely things I'm mindful of and not too excited about.

No matter how Bethesda might screw up this or that in the game, it sure looks like a hell of a great base game for mods on PC. Here's hoping that they don't mess with that by introducing microtransactions or payed mods.

Maybe for 3, but in New Vegas you'd often have anywhere from 7-8 dialog options

Not fond at all of the new approach of the dialog system, which reminds me of Bioware awful way of handling that. Going more and more toward the full action game and keeping the role-play/strategy to the minimum seems to be the new cool thing and that's not my cup of tea sadly. Might be a strecht and they might have more to show regarding that but that my sentiment so far.

The town building is kinda cool, but I don't really see much point. I hoped they would have expended a bit on that, beside the tower defense aspect.
Customization of equipment is really great, and while it doesn't look that amazing graphically speaking, at least it's colorful.

When do you guys think the Pip-Boy edition will go up for preorder on Amazon or Newegg? I really don't want to miss out on it but I don't have the stamina to stay up and keep checking every few minutes. Plus I have work in the morning. :/

The fact I can now build my own base is huuuuge to me. It's something I dreamt of when I first finished fallout 3. Soo sooooo good. Plus now maybe my wife wont get pissy because she "can build/decorate like the sims" altho in a fallout universe haha

Man im hyped. Plus can't wait to walk into Fenway. Hopefully that has a cool story behind it!!

I tuned out after the initial bit of gameplay, was there a showing of loading screens? All I care about now after playing Witcher 3. If an open-world RPG has loading screens moving on from Witcher 3 then I have no care in the world how good it is.

This game cannot exist, it is made for me. I am going to die before this comes out I know it.

Build your own settlement?! Playing catch with Dogmeat?! This is all too much for me.

Obsidian.

Morrowind was 13 years ago. It's basically irrelevent if we're looking at Bethesda now - when Morrowind came out, we were talking about PS2's and Gamecubes and stuff. Pillars of eternity manages a great main quest whilst still using text.

oh yeah; the games graphics/animations still look like dog shit and this is gamebyro to hell and back

he smartly took barely a couple seconds to mention "engine" and "lighting" when the demo got near water and immediatly went into something else cause boy

Yes, but many people who worked on that are still there.

The best thing about the crafting system seem to be that you can actually clean up the gameworld now. No more having scorched books or burnt out motorcycles after 200 years! :)

And about the graphics: The stiff animations was the only thing that bothered me.

Reading things around here...I'm just going to look forward to this game and just enjoy it when it comes out. This was everything I wanted and more. I'm so pumped for November.

The mass effect dialogue system is the biggest insult I've ever seen. I mean, I was pretty offended by the horrible graphics and soulless world in the original trailer, but jesus christ. Scrap the fucking voice acting if you don't have good dialogue. Go the Pillars of Eternity route instead.

I'm glad for voiced dialogue, the old system is archaic as fuck.

Some of you are having delusions about the Fallout 4's overall graphic design and animation. Amazing? looks great?

Are you guys serious?

Are you serious in brushing aside people's opinions and taking yours as fact? I think the lighting and art design look great... what's the issue exactly?

Good luck this week with that attitude.

'It just works' is not so great with base building, true. It just works kind of means there's not so many ways to fuck this up, which usually means a simplified system.

Yeah, but I guess what I mean is...I hope a lot of aspects of the game aren't kind of simplified. I guess my fear is...

I love Saints Row. It's really stupid fun. But I felt like Saints Row's last game took it too far, to the point that everything became boring to me. Everything was so simplified and crazy, that killing enemies was too easy, as was traversing.

So when I see devs say things like "it just works", that + all the over the top crazy shit we saw, I just don't want the game to have this focus on being really over the top fun, and having that all be carried by very simplified mechanics.

My hope is that, because those segments were optional (as per what the dev said), this is only ONE aspect of the game. And that the rest of the mechanics of the game, will still be challenging, and not super simplified like drag and drop, and it just will work for you.

Then again, this is the same series with VATS....so maybe I'm just missing the point. I guess I was just thrown off a bit on how over the top the game was (i didn't expect that).

Some of you are having delusions about the Fallout 4's overall graphic design and animation. Amazing? looks great?

Are you guys serious?

I think it looks great, especially the overall world *shrugs*

Sometimes I really just appreciate my low-quality eyes, I guess? Hahaha.

God I already spend way too much time exploring every nook and cranny in Fallout games. Can't even imagine how many hours I'm going to spend customizing shit and building a wacky base.

I've never clicked with Bethesda games but I might well be getting this. That was one impressive announcement.

Two of my biggest gripes have been addressed. Actual acceptable graphics that don't burn my eyes and actual camera direction for conversations.

Think I just saw GOTY with that crafting system alone. My my.

No fucking clue
Real fucked up of them to not be more specific
Pre orders could go up any minute or in a month
Only guarantee is that they will sell out in minutes when they do go up

It looks like a big fun sandbox of totally inconsequential toys and tools and game systems that provide arguably limitless hours of tweaking and exploring and customising and screwing around with your fancy dress and toy bear rocket launcher and dress up doll playing house.

And that's great. That's a massive amount of awesome content if you're into that early access Steam best seller type of game design.

But "in-depth" is a really shaky term with "role playing games" because while there are a ton of game systems being built into Fallout 4 the depth might not be there in the way people who grew up with the 90s iteration of the franchise would expect. For many people there's more to "role playing" than building light switches and flying your power armour.

And I mean it's all redundant to complain now because people love Bethesda's Fallout and old Fallout is never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever coming back ever forever. But yeah. Like, as a person who grew up on games like Fallout, "in depth role playing" is not how I'd describe Bethesda's take on the franchise at all. It's a totally different type of game that serves a different purpose for a different audience.

I'd have to agree. Kudos to you for taking the evolution in a tempered way instead of flipping out and calling for the death of the franchise as a whole because of the catering shift.

Anyways, I was really onboard until the housing thing came on. The first thing that popped up to be is "what does this have to do with Fallout"? In a series that revolves around decadence and physical decay, why are we building things? Why am I crafting weapons instead of scavenging and using what I have until it's past its usefulness?

It's apparent that Bethesda really is trying to chase the Minecraft/open-world formula. I'm...okay with it, but I'm not really okay with it, ya know?
