Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

This is absolutely incredible since I have a plethora of 360 games collecting dust since I haven't had a chance to hook up my 360 to the primary television.

My hype for this has diminished pretty severely. From what I gather the following situation would occur. Twenty years from now, the Xbox One servers are down. I hold, theoretically, a USB stick or a disc to update the XB1 to the latest firmware. Following that I plop in Perfect Dark Zero for the first time, because I have no taste. The game simply can't play because the servers are gone and I never downloaded the new version. This is correct right?

It would be yes. However that's both something to worry about later... and is also likely to be pushed back the longer compatibility remains. The Xbox One having 360 compatibility makes it more like that the next console (or Windows if they go that route) also does, and so it may never (in your life at least) get to a point where it's worth turning the authentication service off, as some form of it what be required for each current generation anyway.

No shit. i still don't understand it.

All games work on one box. What's there to not understand?

You don't have a VCR hooked up still do you? If you could all of a sudden shove your VHS tapes into a DVD player you already have and it worked what is your reaction then?

Oooh, Console Info says latest status is "update pending". Does that mean it's updating something or whatever? I don't usually pay this much attention to software updates...

There is smoke and mirrors at work here.

Even after he announced it, he walked it back a fair bit.

If PSNow was made free, for games you own, would that be backwards compatibility? Not really.

This is access to some back catalogue games, via downloads and/or streaming.

Imo, the term 'Backwards compatibility' should be reserved for actual native support of previous gen disks.

Still, could be cool, but my initial pleasant surprise has been tamed a bit by reality.

Pretty much. It's looking like a far cry from backwards compatibility... But it's a major improvement. But like most E3 announcements they kinda oversold what they have.

Reminds me of Nintendo and the VC :p

I still have VCR hooked up. I never use it though, the quality of blu rays and dvds makes watching an old VHS tape a less that stellar experience.

Like i said, I have played my 360 games, now I play on next gen for new experiences. I don't have the desire to go back and play games I have played 100s of times already. Obviously there are plenty of people who would prefer to play the old stuff over the new. But I still don't understand it.

Its a cool feature I guess, but for me it is no way a megaton. A megaton would be a new and different way to play. The fabled next gen experience.

Because people actually value their games and don't qualify old games as "they are old so I won't play it"

If it can be played on newer hardware that extends the life of products they put money into and have kept.

"New and different ways to play" are overrated, but that's neither here nor there.

And to continue on the VHS comparison -- there are movies on VHS that will never be on DVD or BRD. If you could play them on a DVD player all of a sudden it is the same thing as this

After the initial excitement, I've cooled off on this.

The main games I want to play are not going to get put up for licensing or peripheral compatibility reasons, so there's no incentive to disconnect my 360 if I'm going to lose a chunk of my library.

I guess anything is better than nothing if you have only disc games, but this pretty much kills the chances of a mini 360 flash storage based box, would would be of way more use to me having an all-digital collection.

I still have my spectrum 48k, my ST, my playstation one, my og xbox, my 360. I value them.

I still have the consoles and computers, their lives don't need extending, they are still alive. BC's appeal just seems to be a space saver, which is obviously helpful, but far from megaton to me.

I totally disagree that new and different are overrated, its what keeps me playing.

Anyway, enjoy your E3.

Where the heck are all my 360 / X1 messages?

I had a preview program invite, and no messages from the last 6 months are in my inbox?!!!

I got the invite in April :'(

Where is it?

The reaction to the BC feels like Phil Spencer announced that your Xbox One has had 360 hardware inside all this time and every game will run perfectly.

What is it, like 100 games when it gets going?

If you're flipping out to play 360 games after this long then I'm sure plugging in your 360 or go buy one would be a great way.

Seems really odd that we're in the second E3 of Xbox One and the big deal is to play some old 360 games, an event where we're looking for new games on a new system. not only that it seems extremely limited software emulation.

PS3 had something like 70-80% emulation and it wasn't a big deal.

Sorry if its been asked..

Can I play XBLA games that I have on my 360 with this?

Well, one of the initial games listed here is Perfect Dark, which is XBLA. It's not in the store at the moment with a bing search though. Not sure if backwards compatibility is live yet.

I'm sure it's been mentioned already, but how are people excited when we all saw what MS did with BC back *on* the 360?

But natively, if they can get every game running properly (how about all XBLA games?!?) and not streamed could be pretty big. Might even sell me on one.

Probably been asked, but I ask anyway:
Will it get improved resolution and frame-rate?
Is it a emulation approach, or are they "reprogamming" the "executables" so to speak.

I don't understand backwards compatibility hype. There is a already a console for that.

I have already played the games, I still have the console.
Absolutely EVERY Xbox One owner has a Xbox 360. Yes.

Also, absolutely EVERY Xbox One + Xbox 360 owner likes having / can have two consoles plugged in at the same time. Yes.

If anyone would be willing to invite me, I would love to play Viva Pinata again after way too long. Gamertag is Mneum

if its recompiled then expect better framerates (on average upto the framerate the game was locked at) and same framerate, they won't go out of their way to change the games programming to apply improvements

Woo! Got three games appearing in my download list: Viva Pinata: TIP, Banjo Kazooie and Mass Effect.

I will put one of the discs in and see what happens. Looking forward to seeing what turns up in the list as I've likely forgotten I own a bunch of them.

Shame Marble Blast Ultra probably won't be one of them :(

It's not recompiled. There's an IGN interview on how it works. It is emulation.

I went for an interview with the people who created the emulation. It's CPU emulation of PowerPC, in a Hyper-V container with Xbox OS installed inside.

They didn't specifically say that there would be enhancements besides using some of the features of the One like taking a screenshot. Any other difference we'll have to wait to hear about unless more was revealed after the conference.

what a fucking megaton. I wish the PS3 didn't use the cell now, argghhhh.

I think the PS3 exclusive library is significantly better than the Xbox 360's (for me personally). For those prefer Xbox exclusives and won't mind playing with the older graphics, this is hugeeee.
Nearly every third party game was better on 360 though. For people who enjoyed last gen in general, this is huge.

Amazing stuff this. I've got some questions.

1. It's up to the publisher ? Hope everyone allows this. What will happen to the original GeOWr now ? Will Microsoft Studios allow it to be emulated after August ?

2. Also, since we're emulating the X360 (if it's sw), can we do "emulateception" AKA emulate the X360's PowerPC as a whole which in turn emulates the original Xbox games like Ninja Gaiden / Ninja Gaiden Black ?

3. How about legacy peripherals, fightsticks and wheels ? If they're compatible now, do they mean they'll eventually be compatible with native X1 games as well ?
