Understood, but there is still the question of how much funding is backing it. Watch the video, they are speaking of how they can expand the game if they reach certain goals.
What do you think the all-in budget for this game will be?
If you are going to put a game out there, you fund it yourself and say look how great we are. We are bringing a series back from the dead. You don't bring it out at E3 and say hey everyone please pay for this game we don't really want to fund, but make sure to give us credit.
What I think will be more interesting is rather than the $ amount its the unit count. The $ may get it funded, but the team backing it needs to know that there is a market beyond those donating to the cause. Shenmue has an incredibly rabid fanbase which you see in the rapid funding, the question for Sony is can we sell enough copies outside of those whom funded it.
I still don't get why they won't accept funding from Sony? I can't believe Sony wouldn't fund $2 million. To have them out there on their stage....
There must be a reason they are going this route. Also don't certain games use KS as a base to show the fan interest is there, then get full funding later? If not, it feels like they are doing this method by choice and rejected further funding? I can't believe they weren't offered funding. It's too unbelievable. At $2 million, l can't believe Sony would make it a focus of their show, and at the same time wouldn't fund their $2 million budget?
Maybe I don't get how this works, or I underestimate what Sony would fund?
