We know the dictionary definition. Using "females" as a noun to refer to human women usually comes off as overly clinical or makes you sound like a Ferengi. Neither is particularly good.

A friend actually thought Emily wasn't Emily at first because she decided she looked Asian, and I couldn't exactly disagree with her. If I didn't know Emily Caldwin's lineage, I'd be under the assumption that she had an Asian parent too. Is she still 'just another white girl' if her race is sort of ambiguous enough to be confused like that? Did no one else get the same impression?
Maybe I have just surrounded myself with like minded people, but as a biology major who probably spends most of his time with other biology majors, male and female are the words that are used. Likewise with my friends who are nurses, and my friends who are in the military. There's nothing offensive about either word.
I was thinking of making this thread, good to see I'm not alone.
This year has felt like everyone was definitely a lot more mindful of the other half of the audience.
* Lots of new IP with female characters....maybe the most I've seen at one E3.
* Positive nods like Women's Soccer in FIFA, female character in Fallout 4 (not new, but they underscored it),
* Even Assassin's Creed put the extra work in to give players a selectable female character; Lara Croft was a lot less creepshow; Gears of War back with a new lady; Dishonored 2 starring a woman...
Really positive overall, and nobody's videogames got taken away.

Being Asian myself, and thereby holding the position of Supreme Arbiter of How Asian a Fictional Character Looks, she looks pretty white to me.
But seriously though, she looks white to me.
Such a terrible and foreseeable character designer, never get why people pay him.
If there's a new Animal Crossing from Nintendo, I really hope they finally put skin color options in the game.

I'll throw another observation in here since you asked. When I saw her, she didn't look totally white to me...but she didn't look very Asian either. She looks ever so slightly biracial to me. Speaking from my expertise as as a biracial Asian-White mix myself

I was very impressed with the amount of women characters/protagonists and presenters during yesterday's conferences. What makes it all the more notable, as Nirolak mentioned above, was that many of the women characters came from AAA games and franchises, and aren't designed to be eye candy. As I said, great to see more women presenters as well. It feels like many publishers/developers have started taking the hint.

Surprisingly, Naughty Dog is being very poor at female characters right now. Both the PS Experience and E3 Uncharted 4 videos have been full of dudes exclusively. Or well... there's the random civilians in the crowd.
Not even female enemies, after the whole "we couldn't have female enemies in The Last of Us because PS3 didn't have enough memory" thing.

If you want more female characters in games, this is how it should be done.
Complaining about lack of the desired character in a game that already exists only incites anger from hardcore fans that can't envision their favorites any other way. By introducing new characters for NEW games people are waaaayyyyy more likely to be excited. That's exactly what happened!

Being Asian myself, Emily looks Asian to me. She could pass off as a distant cousin of Faith from Mirror's Edge. I would actually prefer Emily to look more white, I don't recall seeing a single Asian person in Dishonored.
