Female characters at E3 this year versus last year

Applause at Fallout 4 having playable girls when I thought the franchise already did in previous entries seemed a tad contrived to me though.

There was a rumor circulating that there would be no female option in Fallout 4 cause of the voice protagonist, thus the cheering.

Not sure how good an example she is though. She was shown all of 5 seconds where one one of those you could clearly see her white panties.

Yeah, design looked awfully dolled up. Big meh.

Huh, so like female characters in here must qualify first for certain requirements like, "Cannot be doled up", before being counted. I suppose "In anime-looking games" also would immediately disqualify them since I see no mention of any ladies from Fire Emblem Fates in here... well many in GAF consider anime-looking = pervy so I suppose I can understand.

However, I really, really, really doubt that Nier, of all games, would treat its character as a sex object, but I guess you can't have female character dressed or act in a certain way if they want to be considered "legitimate."

No, it's not about requirements, or a list of qualifications. Really, the topic is that there was a noticeable underscoring of "female characters" or "women in the game industry" in just about every corner of the E3 presentations this year. It appears that all these conversations and articles about women in gaming have started to bear fruit.

And besides, I really, really, really doubt that Nier, of all games, would treat its character as a sex object, but I guess you can't have female character dressed a certain way if they want to be considered "legitimate."

Not everyone is familiar with the style of games that guy designs

Maybe they're just robo-dino-phobic.

I had a friend bitch to me about Dishonored 2 having Emily as a MC when they self-admittedly never played Dishonored is in the first place. I think a lot of the time it's a dumb kneejerk reaction to 'pandering' without really being clued into anything else about the game or if it's a series its history. Even dumber when it's a new IP like Horizon starting on a blank slate, and I figured stuff like Hunger Games would've made these sort of survivalist women characters more mainstream anyhow.

Keep in mind, there was a lot of rumors about that game saying it was just the male MC. Confirmation that that wasn't the case was what generated the applause.

Well, you say that, but then apparently Nier 2 girl is a terrible example (of what? female character?) because the way she dressed ("big meh because of her being awfully dolled up.")

As for the bolded: sure, so I hope people would stop making judgments about stuff they're not familiar with.

Remind me which one Nier 2 was again. Is Nier 2 the game they showed this E3, or one of the two(?) Nier games they released before?

I'm liking the change, despite it feeling like an act of desperation to avoid the dreaded tumblrage. No publisher wants their marketing brow-beaten into submission by folks who never gave a shit about their game in the first place (F4 cheering being a great example, only a true dunce would think the game wouldn't offer gender choice, voice acting or not).

Aw, come on. Looking at the context of the conversation, you could easily see why the ladies from the new Fire Emblem are not mentioned here without resorting to the anime-ostracization angle.

I agree with you that the Nier protagonist should count, even if I didn't like the design.

*eye roll* Did I say that? I'm just criticizing the design. If we're going to list the female character designs, I don't see why these should be immune from criticism.

The thing about FE is there's some good in there but it's outspoken by the bad ones, even if the latter if fewer in numbers than the former. Although I am sure that the word "anime" itself is enough for many to disqualify their inclusion, hahaha (well, not that I don't understand why)

Also, I feel like there's a certain..., let's call it archetype, of what is acceptable characters to be included whenever the discussion of "good" female characters are happening. You know, the strong, kick ass, sword wielding, enemy destroying types--not that there's anything wrong with it, but the scope seems restrictive to me. Ah well, maybe it's all because we lack good female characters beyond that type depicted in video games.

Alright.

This character will have more personality and character than any on this list. I can say that with complete confidence.

how many "real gamers" read the rumor about male-only protags in F4 on reddit and believed it?

like it or not, "gamers" want diversity in games and pubs are listening. stop dismissing them as people who "never gave a shit about their game in the first place."

if anything, being passionate about gaming and communicating to the devs how they can make their games more inclusive means they care more about video games than the reddit neckbeard crew.

Fallout is not a good example though. It's a game known for playing who ever you want. Taking that away is anti thesis to a lot of why its main players love it. I mean it's the only uproar about possibly not having a female character that I didn't see a lot of people argue back that they should stop trying to force Bethesda not to make their vision. Because the uproar was really less about females not having representation and more people wanted choice to play who they wanted.

Now Assassin's Creed is a better case study for it. But I would still argue that there are gamers upset about not having the choice too. Being a feminist doesn't mean you are not also a gamer (I should know, I am both). Sure, some of the outrage may be from non gamers but I would suspect less than people think. If you don't care about something you're not going to be fighting that hard for it or caring as much. You'd be spending your efforts in areas you care about and that affect you most. So I doubt many really don't care about games. They'd most likely be focusing their efforts elsewhere on topics that are closer to them.

If by "real gamers" you mean "bellends looking for reasons to get outraged"? Plenty.

But the question of whether Fallout was going to call into question the gender choice would only be brought up by imbeciles thinking developers are out to get them.

What the heck does Eitr mean? When I saw the game earlier I thought it said Fitr, which at least made a bit more sense.

From their site:
“Eitr” is from Norse mythology, it is a black poison substance that corrupts whoever or whatever it comes into contact with. The story of the game is based around the world tree, Yggdrasil, the connector of the 9 Norse worlds, which becomes poisoned with Eitr, spewing darkness into each world.
