Shenmue 3 shatters Kickstarter Game records ; $2 million achieved in 8 hours

So much confusion I think we need a separate thread to explain the funding process.

this was already posted in the official shenmue thread..

What a glorious thing to wake up to.

Way to go shenmue. Relaxing on the deck with coffee and reading what everyone has to say about this kickstarter.

haha perfect timing.

So this seems like the same agreement Sony has with Capcom about SF5?

Also why no hardcopy for PS4? Terrible decision on their part.

Definitely a disaster decision for a game that is an instant collectors item. Yu Suzuki NEED to make a kickstarter goal for this. I am very sure it will reach it and encourage people to fund more..

Wow! went to bed 7 hours ago and it was at 1.6 mil and I wake up to it at 2.3, it's actually going to happen! now right? insane and there's still a month to go.

Usually kickstarters slow down fast after the first 24 hours and then pick up again towards the end, I'd imagine itll get around 4 million total, maybe 5 ( either way that would be a record for a game)

Interesting that Sega, Capcom and Konami have had sequels or spiritual sequels to their franchises smash records. I gotta wonder if their executives were taking notice and what was going through their minds.

"Why weren't they buying these games when we were actually putting them out?"

I've never kickstarted anything so I have a question:

If I (Germany) put the 29 bucks in will I be able to get this on my euro account?

Probably a dumb question but I need to know.

I'd be surprised if they're even aware those Kickstarters exist.

Congrats to Shenmue fans :) I hope the takeaway to the industry is that when "core" gamers say they want something, they actually mean it and not how to run a Kickstarter because there are a lot of things I don't like about this one specifically.

Seriously. Can we get this in the OP because every other post is asking about the budget.

Maybe if the Kickstarter was upfront about it like it should have been, we wouldn't need this :P

Whether they care or not is one thing but you can't read videogame related news and not hear about these.

"Why weren't they buying these games when we were actually putting them out?"
They stopped putting them out so pent-up demand started to build?

Also, none of these games have risen above tens of thousands of backers, meaning these would still be commercial failures if you directly counted those as sales.

Shenmue 1/2 were AAAA games at the time of their release and needed to sell in the millions of copies to justify their production. It is still very early to say what Shenmue 3 will end up being. A full modern sequel would cost in excess of $100M, and it is not going to be that. It is probably going to be similar in scope to Shenmue 1/2 but with updated graphics. A project like that could potentially cost less than the originals due to production streamlining, though it is still hard to see how they will come up with enough money to pay off those production costs.

I'm not as hype for this as I should be after the Kickstarters for YL, Bloodstained, & Combat Core, but I also think that it hasn't completely registered for me that Shenmue 3 is a thing that will be happening within the next couple of years.

Again, congrats, Yu! The story certainly deserves this much-needed closure. I'm so glad that the public's letting their voices be heard for this to happen.

I think you are aiming very low for your total:

With some decent stretch goals, better rewards tiers, and continued fan interest this could very realistically crush 6 mil.

Already put in $60, but only because I'm being responsible and in the middle of buying a house.

If I get my shit straightened out before the Kickstarter ends I'll be taking my pledge into the stratosphere.

but nobody wants shenmue 3

it's just a handful of vocal fans

this will be the biggest gaming kickstarter by a good deal when this is all said and done

I'm certain playing it today for the first time would feel that way, but back then it was absolutely incredible despite the hilariously bad English voice acting

Yeah, I remember Shenmue 1 moments, like "Holy shit, these clocks are working!" and "Holy shit, I can buy shit in this convenience store!"

I don't know, Star Citizen reached Ludacris Speed a long time ago. Though I guess you could split that 80 million between the original kickstarter, and what's been funded since.

It probably wouldn't even matter because all you'd have to do is make a US account even if they just give out US codes.

The celebration email was a bit anticlimactic.

Suzuki must have lost his collective shit when he found out how fast it got funded. I don't think there's a game developer alive who can ever fully comprehend their pipe dream getting funded in hours after a decade of hardship. The fact that they got an email out at all that fast is better than most.

i do wonder if shenmue ends being a lot more frontloaded than some of the other notable gaming kickstarters. being announced during one of the big three's e3 press conferences when there's always going to be rumours and a ton of shenmue fans watching might end up skewing the final take.

Shame that Bloodstained might not have the "most funded video game" for very long. I've never even played either of the Shenmue games before, but glad that the fans have something to sit their hopes on though.

We'll always be the first video game to one-up Reading Rainbow though. Suck it LeVar!

Shenmue is more plot-driven, and it was written as a trilogy.

So is Yakuza. I think the best way to describe them to a SEGA fan is one is Outrun and one is Ferrari Challenge. Both good games with similarities on the top but vastly different types of games underneath (arcade droving vs simulation racing)

"Why weren't they buying these games when we were actually putting them out?"
Except in Shenmue's case probably, where they look at what the original cost and go "oh right."

I do think the others are either games that WERE successful but did not generate the revenue they wanted (and likely still wouldn't, grotesque expectations and all that) or they had it in their heads were not viable now despite having done well in the past. Maybe not lining up with market trends or other, lesser variants didn't do so hot.

EDIT: And something needs to happen on the HD remaster front, money's really tight for me anyway but I'd probably be more inclined to Kickstarting if I didn't need to drag out the DC when I can and get Shenmue II on the Xbox.

I'm really hoping I can calm down enough to enjoy Nintendo's show today. I don't even know what happened between Shenmue and Uncharted crashing. This is the most I've given to a kickstarter and if they add some new tiers I might be convinced to part with a little more.

They should be less secretive about what happens once it's funded. Questions I have:

1. Will Sony be the publisher?
2. What budget are they aiming for?
3. What if they end up getting their entire budget thru crowd funding? Will they still need a publisher?

"Why weren't they buying these games when we were actually putting them out?"

they were buying them.
but now everyone want's the call of duty numbers
and the only result they get it's that their clones sell poorly and they use it as an excuse to go full mobile.
instead they should just give the people what they want, and be glad to make a profit.

Putting this KS up during the conference was absolutely genius. Everyone was so emotional and excited after the FFVII/Shenmue III wombo combo that a ton of people impulse donated. Kickstarter going down almost immediately was hilarious too.

30k people raise over $2m. This triggers Sony to fund the rest of the development. But Sony will not sell the game to any of those 30k people as they already backed the kickstarter with a reward being a copy of the game. So Sony would fund on the basis that a lot of people that *didn't* care enough to back the kickstarter for $29, will instead buy the full game for $59? How does that make sense?

Where is the Kaz face kicking spencer face version of this gif?

Or maybe sony logo face kicking ms logo face?

Gimmie something! This is a console war gif!

I own an Xbox One and I'm extremely happy this happened anyway. So maybe there's no such thing, only good competition.

They never give those sorts of details. Bloodstained is funded. We still don't know who their publisher is do we?

Your third question has an easy answer, if they get their budget entirely through crowd funding, the game will be made that much bigger.
