What door is this going to open? Is it going to make more developers of dead franchises try to get funded by giving the game in return for backing it? If so the fans of those games will happily pay the money for it? if they feel like this is one of the few chances they have.
Or do people think publishers are going to ask for 5 million dollars to get Assasin's Creed or Elder Scroll's funded? Because I don't expect those games to ever get near their goals. Is it taking a lot of responsibility from Sony, because I was under the impression these games cost tens of millions to make and around 3 million doesn't seem to take any significant burden of of Sony.

I was happy with the premise of the KS when I chose to pledge this morning and I'm still happy with it. If anything, it sounds much more viable now than twelve hours ago.

We're talking about a new game of a 14 year old hiatus, "dead", blamed countless times for SEGA's downfall, almost industry joke status IP.
The fans have actually been asking for a kickstarter since it became a thing. This game most likely wouldn't have been possible in any other way. Not with just crowdfunding, not with little chance to find a publisher.
If putting my money upfront is the price to pay to revive a beloved IP that no publisher wants to touch with a stick, so be it.
I just know that my 13 year old self just shed some tears of joy with this announcement.

Funniest thing about all of the people complaining I bet either A. Havent even backed the game or B.werent planning on getting it anyway. Or C. Are salty now it has no chance of being released on anything but pc and PS4. But I knoe If it were me getting that game for 30 bucks is a damn steal and now with Sony backing it means the game has a chance at having an even greater experience.

I can scarcely believe that we're finally FINALLY getting a full-fledged Shenmue 3 at some point in the future. If Sony is funding the development then it's not going to be a watered-down, cheap product like I initially feared could be a possibility, but rather an actual proper follow-up that fans have been dreaming of for 14 years.

People think Sony should pay for development of an IP that is a proven commerical failure, rather than use crowdfunding the guage interest and make their reasons for investing in an IP like that make sense on paper.
Kickstarter isn't ro "fund" development, it's to kick start projects. Get them off the ground. The Shenmue Kickstart did just that.

My take on this is Sony will deal with localization and a retail version.
Yeah I'm totally not a fan of publishers wanting to make sure there is enough interest there for games fans want.

I'm not going to lie, that's extremely scummy. If you're going to do something like that, you should make it clear at the forefront - and cap it once you've reached your goal. Didn't they go on stage and say something along the lines of "We have nothing to do with this Kickstarter, but we wanted to give it some exposure?"
I'm still excited to be receiving Shenmue, but this is definitely a publisher/kickstarter dynamic that I'm not 100% in favor of. Dat Shenmue tho!

Corporate backers are not obligated to disclose themselves or the nature of their funding. Everybody is still getting what they paid for. Sony could've just as easily gotten away with not revealing this at all. Much ado about nothing imo

It was stated the funding was for the PC/PS4 versions of Shenmue 3. 2 million was super low for this kind of game. It was rather obvious that it was to gauge interest.
And it is amazing that it is happening this way.

He was going to do the Kickstarter regardless. And you should feel bad for him, the game was a financial failure on BOTH platforms it was on.
Both due to one tanking, and the other with a small install base and non Eastern game demographics.
I thought it was smart. You want that game made, you fans want it made, prove it.
And we did. Plus I say keep it open for the whole month, since we can get a $29 game that we know is 100% coming now.

they "would make sure it will happen". That can also mean that they provide a 2 year long supply of hardware and drink and food. But I think funds are more likely

AAA games that are selling millions upon millions back into development exceeding their budget is not going to turn to KS to fund half of their game. Huge publishers like EA nor Activision will even try something like that as they know their status and reputation, plus the licensing from the original creators are totally something they have to consider. It's never going to happen like this again.
