I've always considered this to not be a great argument against pre-ordering. And I say this as someone who doesn't Kickstart or pre-order anything. My reservations about pre-ordering this far in advance is that I'd personally like to wait and see how development is going and whether or not -- close to release -- this is even something I'm going to want/have time to play at launch. I mean, if something I cared about was on the brink of may-or-may-not-get-funded, I'd probably swallow my pride and back. But if it's something that's getting funded anyway, I'll take a wait-and-see approach.
But the idea that this is thirty dollars that could be working for me over the next several years just seems like a reach. Sure, every dollar counts. But what separates the financial fat cats out there from the rest of the 99 percenters isn't knowing better than to Kickstart vidya games.

Hmmm.. I still don't get this. You really think people would not back up Shenmue 3 if on their website they would have a "with the support of Sony"? I just can't see how Sony could be the bad guy in any possible world in the case of Shenmue.
I for one am on the opposite side... Keeping the game hostage? I think this game was trapped under ruins for a long time and I think Sony set it free. I really don't think the kickstarter would've been this successful if it wasn't for Sony and their conference. So for me not only did they help with the revival and pushed into the main light one of the most wanted series by a small minority of very passionate niche gamers, but due to this campaign success, is helping the game reach bigger goals. Those manipulative bastards!!! Now I only hope they would not manipulate the masses into bringing something like System Shock back to life...
Most of those naysayers were working on the assumption that a Shenmue sequel would need to be completely crowdfunded, and would have a scope equal or greater to its predecessors. This is looking like a relatively small followup with a bunch of Sony money behind it. And at the end of the day they'll probably still lose cash on the project.

You get extra rewards at $100. You shouldn't be concerned about someone pre-ordering a product.

Shenmue is niche, beloved yes, but still niche IP that nobody has stepped up to help develop over the past 10+ years. Not Sega, not Nintendo, not Microsoft. Probably because it would not make them much of a profit. So why are you upset that Sony aren't committing 100% of the funding, just 70% or 80% or whatever percentage they are? It's more than anyone else has done in trying to bring this game to life.
As for the $2+ million, the people who pledged that did so in exchange for the finished game, they won't be buying the retail game when it launches. Everyone getting the $29 version now is one less $60 customer in 2017. So let's not pretend that is anything great for Sony.
When all is said and done they will probably end up with a small profit or just a breakeven. The spin that this is some kind of evil corporate scam to screw people over and make a fortune in the process is dumb as hell.

I think people would have looked at Sony differently if they had put their name on the Kickstarter. I have no clue whether it would have gotten funded or not (although I think it would have gotten funded no matter who's name was on it).
You have to admit that it would have looked real weird if Sony was asking gamers to pony up pre-development in order to make a game.
Most of the people preordering wouldn't earn enough interest to even cover inflation over two years.

This right here. As a fan of the series that dreamed of this day this was one of the most common things people would say about the franchise. Some people even doubted the kickstarter would get the 2 million by 31 days.

To be fair, that's how most investing works. I invested in a friend's dev studio and it tanked. I don't get my money back. That's why Investors are scared of risk.

GAF is not a hive mind.
It's not their game. They are not asking you for money so they can make a game. They are not asking you to kickstart a new Uncharted or Last of Us.
The Shenmue team is asking you for money so they can make a game. Sony is just amazing enough to support that project if the game is backed by the fans. (And if you do want to consider the kickstarter a loan, considering it a loan to Sony is wrong, it's a loan to YsNet and the Shenmue Crew).
I agree. It was Sony all along. But they came out and said they were not involved when clearly you and I can see (or at least believe) Sony had an interest the whole time.
Shenmue fans are obviously passionate and want to complete the series. Glad they have their game coming.

Surely Sony thought that they could sell more than 66K copies of this game (the amount that would have been necessary to meet funding goals), otherwise they wouldn't have given Suzuki the time of day.
I actually not sure if Kickstarter is a good way to gauge interest beyond the grassroots, hardcore fans -- particularly when it's in kind of an oddball genre like this one where you can't look at the sales of similar games.
Okay, so 35K people want to buy Shenmue and put down money for it today. How many people will buy it when it releases? How much of a budget should it have? How much should be spent on marketing? Nobody really knows how far the market goes beyond this wave of Kickstarter backers.

Sony doesn't own the IP, but they sure do own a lot more of the revenue now so it is partly their project.
