Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

I just saw this on reddit...http://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/3a32xz/xbox_360_controllers_can_be_connected_to_a/.compact

Apparently you can connect Xbox 360 controllers to a Windows 10 PC (streaming Xbone) to use for couch coop.
Not confirmed, but this might support arcade wheels, rock band instruments, etc too.
Pretty cool!

From an engineering standpoint, this is so fucking crazy to me.
Essentially, MS found a way to emulate three Cell Broadband Engine PPEs at 3.2 GHz, a PC GPU (which is SUPER hard to do, I might add), and all the RAM strangeness that the 360 has at the same time.
All of that running on what is basically slightly-above-average laptop-grade hardware. Like, dayum.

Also: I don't mean to beg, but if someone out there's got a preview program invite, pls. Give me. I'll owe you one.

The fact that a new version of a game needs to be downloaded for this to work means that Microsoft is running some process on it (and creating something"new")

That will be why they need the permission of the Publishers. Permission to modify the original code.

Correct. They do indeed rewrap it.

Well it's your company

It just seems like they went for the sexy headline with this feature. Catches your attention. But when you actually analyze what functionality yore getting, it's not nearly as cool as you thought. Still, applaud MS for the effort here. Better than ps now (even though it's run fine for me).

To me, downloading the game/vs installing to the hard drive is the same. The Xbox One is running the original code, with a virtual machine Xbox 360 wrapper. Not sure how this isn't as cool as we thought. The limitation is licensing/publisher and maybe some peripheral issues. This also in preview only. It doesn't officially launch until the holiday season.

There's a bit of "proof" there in that the build tags/internal names of the titles having x64 in the string.

As has been pointed out many times, that means exactly nothing. The build tag of the emulator has x64 in the name. No one has pulled a package from a hard drive, let alone opened one up to see what format the game files are inside the container.

And yes, of course the emulator is going to be x64 native code, because that's what's running on the system. The same as how when you install an emulator on your PC, the emulator executable is x64, but that doesn't mean the code running inside the emulator is.

Title strings really aren't proof (or even indicative) of anything.

Isn't it more like...put a disc in your Xbox one, and then get a free download of the game?

I don't think the game is ever running off of the disc. Putting the disc in simply confirms you own it, allowing you to play the downloaded digital version. The XB1 isn't really running that disc. I don't know. I guess it doesn't matter that much. And if I'm wrong about how this is working let me know.

No games on the Xbox One (or PS4 for that matter) are ever "running off of the disc."

Aside from the big Xbox One user base that may decide to PURCHASE these third party titles for their Xbox One because now they are playable on the system?

The potential to MAKE MONEY and all you have to do is agree and say go for it, but yeah, NO THIRD party company is going to want to do something crazy like that.
As I explained here, the problem is disc support. If it were digital only, publishers would be all over it.

So I've been popping in here periodically and reading a page or two, but I still have some questions I'm not quite clear on. Forgive me if they've been asked a ton already:

1) So DLC doesn't work with this as of right now?

2) Are there any graphical improvements? Does the IQ look any cleaner? I saw some people talking about Mass Effect frame rate and the consensus looked like it had the same slowdown as the original

3) I saw something about ONLY 100 games coming, and that's what the voting is about. Is that confirmed? That would really blow if a tiny bit of the library was coming over.

4) I know you can take screenshots and DVR clips (?), but can you stream to Twitch?

So far this isn't as huge for me as I'd originally hoped, although it is cool. I was hoping to finish games I have yet to complete on 360, like Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age Origins, and Dishonored. Having to download the games in full really hampers it for me, as my 500gb is filled to the brim as is, and I'm not looking to buy an external any time soon. The no DLC just outright kills it though.

try hard reset? you have the latest preview update, right?

Okay. Laughing at my self here. First, the hard reset didn't work.

Second, Mass Effect did work, it was Mass Effect 3 that was giving me problems. I don't know why I have two ME1 cases (mine is collectors ed), but thanks anyway, sangreal.

Mass Effect 3 isn't supported yet, read the OP for working games.

does suspend/resume work??

Mass Effect seems to close when I do suspend/resume.

I've also noticed the 360 wrapper settings don't stay when you restart the game. So if you like playing "Appear offline" as default, you have to go into the blades and change it when you load up the game.

does suspend/resume work??

yes, but it is ill-advised because a lot of 360 games don't autosave frequently

e: at least it worked for me with Kameo

This is what MS says:

Game Saves

Save your Xbox 360 games on Xbox One often! If you leave the game (i.e. launch a full screen app or another game) you could potentially lose any unsaved progress.

Thanks for the info!!
I believe they will fix that. Will be useful (essential) for my lost odyssey playthrough :)

You say the music happened in all cases, but did every Xbox have this bug? I have it installed on a modded 360 and a retail 360, definitely neither have any skipping.
I was sure it did, but maybe not (or future revisions fixed it). At least, I ran mine off a phat and a slim and they both did it. This is one of the threads that mentions it.

Car shadows spaz out a lot on that game, though. Definitely not as bad as performance issues but it's distracting.
I don't remember the shadow issue that much, maybe because I was playing from bumper cam at the time. I just remember how well it ran!

I'd assume the PGR thing was fixed or a per-console case then. As for Rallisport, I can record it at some point if it matters. It's fully playable but a bit of an eyesore.

Can anyone confirm if there is any added AA/AF?

Not confirming or denying, but I feel like we shouldn't expect asset/rendering changes to the games, it could introduce new issues to deal with for MS.

How long does it take for a preview invite to arrive in my inbox?

I think I am screwed. Quick Mustard was kind enough to send me an invite but I see nothing. I think it's because a couple of months ago I got a preview invite and deleted the message. Damn!!!

Does anyone know cloud saves don't work with Super Meat Boy? Will it ever work?

For me it was around 3 days from invite to first message, then from the message you download the app, apply, and wait another few days.

Uhh no, this is just emulating the games, they aren't remastering all games.
It's very common for emulators to add IQ improvements, even the PS2 added bilinear filtering to PSone games.

Heck the OG XBOX emulator on the 360 which people love to badmouth added 4x MSAA to almost every game. Given how this time MS have the same GPU vendor it should be even easier to add these enhancements.

Oh my.....god.

I think XBO just won this generation.

For all the talk about me not caring about BC.....this immediately puts the XBO on upcoming purchase status. Sony.....if they dont follow suit....

To hell with streaming.

Seems like me n a few others were wrong about BC this gen. For XBLA games alone this is huge, massive. Did someone mention secret sauce yet? Does this count as being saucy ?

I know others probably mentioned this before as a wish....but this was part of my insane game emperor request.

1 Frankenstein console with Sony, MS, Nintendo input.....and some PC folks too. Can play all their exclusives. PC exclusives too.

It shall be backwards compatible all the back to Atari 2600 days. Can use cartridges and discs of course. And if you really like digital....any physical media you have will have a free digital version, whether its cartridge or disc. This goes for games you already have and future games. Will still apply if you get a game used.

Sorry if it has been asked before, but has there been anything officially announced regarding wireless peripherals (Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, XBox 360 wheel) support? I understand that the XB1 uses a different wireless technology, but what if you had one of those wireless receivers that is used for the PC?

No accessory based games since they're doing software based emulation.

Harmonix confirmed they'll be selling a dongle for the Xbox One to use 360 instruments for Rock Band 4. We don't know yet if this will be Rock Band specific or a generic one any game can use on the One.

I did ask them specifically if it was a rebadge of the Xbox 360 Windows Adapter and they said it wasn't. It's all new.

It's certainly a huge first step in getting more attention for the Xbox platform. There's still quite surprisingly a lot of people who haven't upgraded yet, so having the Xbox One play a majority of Xbox 360 games with the new features of the Xbox One BUT still emulating basic system features of the 360 like old party chat is huge. I'm sure Sony would love to do something similar, but the Cell architecture is really too complicated for the PS4 to emulate -- and it was most certainly a huge engineering accomplishment for the Xbox team to do what they have done. It also allows Microsoft to get exclusive deals that neither Sony or Nintendo can really match -- like Fallout 4 having Fallout 3 and Rainbox Six Siege having Vegas 1 and 2 for Xbox One.

ever heard of vmware ?

Phil Spencer talking about this right now on Giantbombs show.
Any word about more specifics on how new titles will be added?

I uploaded my cloud saves and am playing Mass Effect right now, this works so incredibly well. Still can't believe they did it.

He says there are very little tweaks for individual titles, pretty much except for multi disc games they just need to repackage it and the emulator will work. For 3rd party they just need permission to repackage and then test the game, no tweaks are made to the actual game code. The emulator is for the whole hardware layer, an actual 360 os runs on it and then games run on that. Mentioned wanting to see LO and BD work on it specifically.

Sweet. Seems like a simple process to get new games approved. And did he mention whether or not the holiday launch will have more games than are currently supported? I am guessing they will steadily roll more out to preview members over the coming months...

They announced 100+ once it rolls out to everyone later this year. We're just getting a little preview of first party titles which we'll hopefully see expand each week.
