Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

They can go through all their PR speak, but they can't defend this shit. As a resident of Britain, I'm glad I went with the $ version to begin with, but they've been nickel and diming their customers since launch which pisses me off as I enjoy the game and would prefer if they didn't piss off their (potential) community with horrible pricing.

No, actually, that's not what they said. They are defending the price on the basis of the amount of content they are putting in.

The big problem is, they announced the price and did not announce much detail on the scope of the content. We have a sense that it's big, much bigger than the two prior expansions, but beyond that, we just don't know. I'd have either announced a general list to help provide some sense of the scope (X strikes, Y MP maps/modes, Z story missions, etc), or held off on announcing the price until they felt more comfortable doing so.

Right now we're in this odd place where we know the price, but not the package that price entails.

When it comes to the extras its most definitely a case of "Fuck you give me money. " He doesn't even hide that. It's shameful.

Wait. 40 pounds? That translates to roughly 500 sek (Swedish currency). There is no way in god damned hell they can charge that for an expansion. They have got to be kiddin'. I bought The Witcher 3 on launch for 550 sek. C'mon ...

Those responses from Luke were disgusting and basically a "fuck you" to anyone that owns the game already.

As much as I enjoy playing the game with my friends, I don't think I will purchase it.

£40 for a DLC pack is ridiculous. I'm sure plenty of people will still bite but damn... Theres too many good games coming out this year to be spending that much on DLC. I was personally done with the game after 20 hours or so.

I don't know, it sure sounds like that.

They're avoiding being clear and the thing is out in, three months? Do you really believe that they're going to have the content to justify the price after vanilla Destiny and how lacking the expansion pass ended up being?

The GOTY edition or whatever looks like a good value at $60, and I am tempted to play the game, but looking at all this from a distance I'm not sure that I want to get involved, knowing I could easily be screwed by them in the future.

We're really comfortable with the value we're giving to players

And that is the problem.

The value they've given players up until now has been complete shit, with the base game and especially the DLC. This new "expansion" looks to take the cake, though.

The arrogance of this damn company, man...

Those responses from Luke were disgusting and basically a "fuck you" to anyone that owns the game already.

That's pretty much been their whole attitude since launch and what completely turned me off on the game. They think they're on the right track and doing a good job. It really became apparent to me when they launched that first live event "Queen's Wrath" or whatever and it was just a couple of tweaked variable bounty missions. They talked it up as if it were something of worth that players should be excited about.

It's 40€, $40 and £40. They forgot to use exchange rates or something

Haha that's a good parody from a poster...

Legendary edition seems like a sweet deal if you have never bought Destiny before (i.e. myself). $54.99 means you're paying $15 for base game + all released DLC. Might jump on that.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Can you see that some fans are confused that you're asking them to buy stuff they already own?

"Yeah, I can totally empathise with those people. But the Collector's Edition is a pretty cool package for people who want to pursue that stuff. Otherwise, surely what you're saying is that you would want to buy them separately, right?"

Well, yeah. I would rather do that - pay a few pounds or dollars or whatever - than spend money on things I already own.

"Well, we have nothing more to talk about regarding your opportunity to spend extra money in Destiny, other than The Taken King and the three versions we've announced."
Jesus christ that tension. ._. That is some pretty bad PR. Actually, it's insanely bad, oh my god I can't believe he said this.

The sad part is tons of people will buy this and many will rebuy the entire game to get some new dance moves.

Seriously destiny is the prime example of the worst of the game industry.

"Yeah, I empathize with them, but too bad so sad, we're not changing anything."

Screw you guys too then, I'll pass on Destiny in all forms in the future. I don't even care about dance emotes, the principal of it all and their attitude towards dedicated players is gross.

I would say "lol Activision", but even they don't do crap like this with CoD.

Right now we're in this odd place where we know the price, but not the package that price entails, and so they have to defend it without being specific, which is rather awkward.

I think people are talking about the "You bought stuff already from us, so what? Either buy the more expensive copy that includes stuff you already bought or tough shit" response.

If you are just getting into Destiny it is a great value.

Existing players? Hell naw

Yeah I got that same feeling from reading it. I'll wait to see what they do against the incredibly unbalanced pvp and then I may buy the full game + DLC package for cheap somewhere.

Hope no one buys this in the UK, £40 is disgusting in itself let alone the conversion.

It was a hard swallow dropping £35 for the first two expansions which IMO weren't worth the price-tag.

£40 for one expansion, when I could by a brand new game is ridiculous.

Destiny has been one huge experience in nickel-and-diming.

Those subclasses should've been part of the base game. Or released for free later on. It was pretty blatantly incomplete. A lot of the changes made through the DLC should've been free, in fact.

well as long as people spend money on bungies games they keep making them.

I sold my copy after 2 weeks.
But i don't hate them for supporting their game and trying to suck all the money out off it.

Absolutely scandalous.

This part is my favourite:

And for existing players it also comes with the Founder's pack with a new Sparrow, shader and emblem."

There is no way he was making eye contact with the interviewer when he came out with this shit. It's laughable

That's a problem I face right now. On the one hand I love playing the co-op elements of the game with friends and strangers, and then on the other hand I find the company that makes it and the company that publishes it to be disgusting. Seeing Luke shamelessly defend that garbage is seriously turning my stomach.

I wonder how much of these DLC packs were actually part of the original game that they just decided to split off to make more money?

With the amount of games coming out this fall, they would have to do something really special to get me to care about Destiny again. $40 without giving any idea of what it is isn't helping.

$40 for the expansion isn't the problem. I'm fine with that.

It's the exclusive CE stuff that I have a problem with. There should be a way for day one players to get that content for cheaper than $80 (without having to buy the base game and season pass again).

Sad to see Luke Smith being a PR shill, and a pretty bad one at that.

I love the game but the price tag is ridiculous.

Was looking to get back into Destiny but the pricing around this has put me off entirely.

No point in getting back in now without buying the $40 expansion pass

The $40 price tag for the taken king is only for people who own the previous DLC's. Everyone else has to pay $60 to get the bundle with the other 2 DLC's.

It is a complete mess. Not to mention the doubts Taken King actually has enough content to justify that price tag.

My gut tells me to skip its release and wait for the price to drop because boy didnt the price for OG Destiny drop like a rock a month after release.

Considering most of this games "dlc" was made before release its even more fucked up

Im glad microsoft wiped there hands of this company they are shocking

"We don't have a way to go back in time and experience those things again. So the players who were there can say 'I was here when...' and 'I did it when it was new'.

I was there looping planets for hours for mats....
I was there grinding when the cryptarch toyed with our hearts...
I was there when the new DLC came with like fucking 5 new currencies....
I was there when the Raids were a glitchy mess...O wait hang on

Bungie there is no pride in having 'been there', fuck me this company is the definition of arrogance. So fucking tone deaf I'm considering giving EA/DiCE my money again after the shitshow that was BF4 just to get away from Bungie's never ending treadmill of bullshit

Luke Smith has me convinced however Luke if you're reading my post, please get Peter Dinklage to do Ghost VO work. Its too goddamn creepy going to DLC destinations without my ghost opining about the mission(s) other than crota lady and the awoken lady guiding me.

I don't mind 40 for the expansion. I paid it already (to take advantage of the 15 dollar rebate promotion this week). I mind what you pointed out. They're fucking over the fans that have been there since day one, and then Luke is essentially laughing at us with his answers. Seriously, fuck that guy.

Just announce in-game LFG first, and then more locations.

The one new destination, as they refer to it (the ship), might be cool for the duration of one expansion, but if The Dark Below and House of Wolves are anything to by, I'd expect that one destination to be stretched super thin in all directions until Destiny 2. Is there really enough new stuff here to form the foundation for another year?

Destiny is a great time, but its still got major problems with content and grouping and a very narrow end-game progression.

I feel like you should put some of these things that you are empathising with into practice.

Got dayum.

Between this and Gerstmann going in on Destiny during Giant Bomb's live show last week, Luke sure hasn't done a good job of defending their product or the value proposition it's presenting.

Which, in fairness, is pretty much impossible given what it is, and what they've been pricing every piece of content at.

In summary - "Were ripping you off. What of it?"

Whoever was representing Bungie here was awful. He/she needs to never be interviewed again. Just awful shitty stuff.
