Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

I feel like they're committed to their Destiny + Comet Expansion game and pricing model but Bungie as one studio just can't produce enough content to merit that cycle.

Destiny should have been a multiple studio endeavour.

I dont buy that this is an Activision decision. Didnt Bungie leave MS because they wanted more control? Well, this is them in control.

This is the other thing. Bungie is in control. If it was activision they wouldve never put the Dark Below pvp maps in royation(Activision has no precedent doing that, see CoD). I'd happily give Activisin shit but....its Bungie.

It was unwise for Bungie to skip the Weekly Update last week. It would have been a chance to get out there and defend this the right way before it spun out of control.

Now you have characters like Luke Smith, who is a nice guy and a good game designer, doing a poor job at PR and making this issue snowball out of control.

Bungie needs to fix this "dance move-gate" thing and get back on track hyping the actual content of this expansion.

We'll know how bad a spot Bungie is in if this thread is still on the front page by Friday afternoon, after Thursday's update either clarifies things or makes them even worse.

This is just like the whole thing in Dark Below with wiping out your exotic upgrade progress. You almost feel bad for clumsy ol' Bungie at this point. I know they just want to make awesome games.

Price tag is unjustifiable and indefensible. Bungie has been ripping people off since the first DLC. First off, each should've come with an entirely new planet/area. And "TTK" should come with two or more, not just one new area.

Embarassing really. The guy sounds like a complete tool.

It's Luke Smith. He's been this way since his 1UP days. I find him utterly insufferable. Grinding up to Bungie back in those days really worked out for him though.

Yup I feel as if the tech was final but the game, plot, meta and everything else was alpha at best. The rumours about a last minute gutting to ship just fit this game too well to accept that the core of that tale is true. What I find worse is this constant sense that Bungie are either unaware of the criticisms or regard them as being so irrelevant as to be unworthy of comment.

Agreed with this. It is rather telling at this point.

I really don't understand the collectors edition complaints. The in-game bonuses are negligible junk that doesn't remotely affect the game in any meaningful way. The game already has a shitload of shaders and emblems, having a couple I can't access doesn't matter in the least.

As for the DLC costing $40, it also doesn't make sense to criticize it before we know what's actually included in it. I'm all for raising the pitchforks if it looks like a ripoff but right now we don't actually much anything about it.

$40 converting into £40 certainly is a ripoff though. That definitely needs to be corrected before launch.

Late adopters are already getting rewarded by having a ton of content for a cheaper price than early adopters. But in a longevity and community game like Destiny, it's not a good idea to alienate your hardcore players who are buying all your content day one.

Why reward the budget shopper who waited, beyond the cheaper price they waited for?

Luke needs some PR training or something.

There's only so much PR training can do when the only answer you have to give is bad. He's really saying the only thing he can without outright dismissing the question.

It's really poor form how badly they're bungling this for existing players though.

I think he is totally wrong, people are jumping to conclusions here...Phobos is a new moon I think that is 1 new area, plus there is the dreadnaught (Which is supposed to be large), that's 2, plus there is rumoured to be new areas on existing planets? Maybe people should see what content it has before bringing the pitchforks.

I'm pretty up to date on all the rumors and likely content. I was more just calling him out, and possibly correcting some misinformation.

I think the problem is that they're telling people to rebuy the entire game to access the extra stuff.

It's the attitude behind it.

You don't have to buy it though? I don't get it, it's an extra perk to get the collectors, don't like it just buy the expansion? Am I missing something here?

You can buy a retail game with that price, gotta wait for a price drop later or Destiny 2

Also $60 if you want the buy the DLC alone.

If only Activision had access to more studios. =)

Do you ave anything constructive to say or just trolling? MAybe I mis-understood? Maybe you can point out where I am wrong instead of a LMAO.

I paid £40 for base Destiny

£35 for the Expansion Pass (which is priced at $35 in the US)

They want £40 for the Taken King (which is priced at $40 in the US)

UK owners are being majorly screwed over on pricing. I could buy a brand new game in place of the Taken King.

The first two expansions IMO were certainly not worth £35, so I'm very doubtful the Taken King is going to be worth £40 on its own.

Furthermore, brand new Destiny buyers will be able to spend £40-45 on a physical copy of the Taken King and get Destiny-The Dark Below-House of Wolves-The Taken King all in one package. They are screwing over the userbase who bought the original game and made it a success for them.

Jesus fucking christ. Everything about that exchange is insanity.

Holy shit... The hubris of these guys... They literally think their fucking emotes are hot shit and worth a premium price tag.

yep. it's actually pretty amazing

Kind of wish OP would have selected that part because it just sums up Bungie/Activision perfectly.

hahaha ffs wow. Yeah, I'm officially 'out' now. Nice attempt with something new Bungie, but you swapped the devil you knew for the devil you don't.

Triple H did this in 2002 and it worked out pretty well for him though..
just watched Vengeance 2002

I liked Luke back when he was on 1UP, but man, he is such a damn bullshitter. His response to not allowing for trading/implementing soulbound items.

"We've talked internally about stuff like soulbound before, and to do that right now feels like that would really be potentially disruptive for players. They've had this experience of passing weapons around between their different characters, and one day we're like, that weapon you used to use, Brad, you can't shift that to your other guy."

Yes, because no games have figured this problem out before! We've had "account-bound" stuff in MMORPGs for probably over a decade now. And this guy is one of their lead designers?

Yea, he only helped make the best thing in Destiny, take him off the design team!

Luke needs some PR training or something.

He used to be a games journalist. He shouldn't need any tips on this front.

Yea, he only helped make the best thing in Destiny, take him off the design team!

No, he did not. The best things in Destiny were its core mechanics and "feel of shooting," not to mention its incredible art direction and sound design.

Some ripoff of a circa-2007 WoW raid that only shined because Destiny is a fun game to play from moment-to-moment is absolutely not the best thing in the game, especially when only a minuscule amount of your players will get to experience it.

Besides, I'm not advocating to kick him off the team. It just baffled me that he could not even consider the idea of "account bound." Mind this was after he claimed to have "discussed it internally." It's a concept that's been around for a long time, but much like their content strategy, it does seem like Bungie likes to operate as if they are in a vacuum.

Someone who A) wants the extras but B) does not want to pay the incremental $40 is in a hard place. They either over pay, or miss out on some things they want.

OK UK looks bad, but I fail to see how anyone who has had destiny since day one and decides to get taken king for 39.99 is getting screwed? From the looks og it taken king is a big improvement, and it looks to have a lot of new content, 2 new areas, and more new areas on existing planets...level cap of 50....that is bigger then the other 2 combined. 12 story missions, 6 strikes, 1 raid thats a lot,

His response was bad though.

I guess but it's shaders and emblems? I really don't see it being a big issue but I guess people are into those things.

Hundreds of hours retreading the one new location back and forth for another year?

Fighting the one new remixed enemy faction?

At least the base game cam with Earth, the Moon, Venus and Mars and four enemy factions, for $60. A game that was content light at launch is now about to push much less for the second year.

I do hope they have some surprise announcements.

Jesus christ.

I love my Destiny but their expansion are the LAZIEST I've ever seen.

There is litteraly 0 cinematic or new narrative. The ghost isn't talking. There are BARELY any new rooms that are not accessible sicne Beta... It's 20$ for news guns and a new NPC to farm more stuff.

Oh yeah?

$40 extra dollars on top of the $40 you're charging for the expansion for some exclusive emotes and shaders? Why the hell would you do that? Shitting on your dedicated fans yet again, I see. Assholes.

I've been a diehard fan and player of this game since Day 1 on Xbox. 3 level 34's, every exotic, 30+ Etheric Light. On Xbox. I can deal with exclusive Playstation shit that you do, even though that pisses me off, too. $40 for this expansion even seems fair from what they've shown, in my opinion.

But this?

Fuck you Bungie. And double fuck you Activision.

1UP Yours-era Luke Smith would have eviscerated this bullshit cash grab that fucks over the most dedicated Destiny players instead of rewarding them.

That was my first thought too.
It's sad seeing him out there spouting this Kotick apprentice type shit.

If i wanted more monotonous crap then i would train agility in Runescape. But even that is better since i can actually chat in that game.

Almost booted uo Destiny to play HoW for the first time since i stopped back in January, but im not down for another 40$. Im officially out, that being said i have plenty of people i used to play with who are buying Taken King. I dont think Destiny is going away anytime soon. (Anecdotal)

What leak are you talking about?

Here.

The information was a while ago, so it's completely possible they could have added more content since then. They also changed a few things around over the months like pushing back a raid in HoW for a PvP mode.

The rumor at the time was 12 story missions, 3 strikes, one raid, new subclasses, the hive ship area, and a few minor gameplay additions.

I wonder how Jason Jones feels about all of the decisions around the Activision contract. I can't imagine he really thought it would end up like this or maybe he just has changed greatly since the early Bungie days. I still can't believe they signed a deal with the devil thinking things wouldn't have turned out like this.

It's literally infinite hours of potential entertainment. You can't even put a price on that.

Not much of a defense, honestly. Good interview, though, and this questions here:
I get that it is big but it is also the same price as the base game. That had four areas rather than one and more missions than the Taken King. Why is it the same price?
... is exactly the reason I will not be trying this out. $60 for the content on the actual disk felt like a ripoff,

Don't buy it?

Stop giving developers money if you don't want shit like this to continue. It's pretty simple.
