Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

NEVER FORGET

I'm still outraged at missing out on this amazing content.

I'm cautiously optimistic, actually, about both the quality and quantity of content in Taken King. Partly based on the trajectory on both between The Dark Below -> House of Wolves, and partly based on what they showed at E3, which looks uniformly excellent and very different from what is in the game today. But a more complete inventory would certainly be welcome, especially in the context of the asking price.

I have to agree. Theyve made strides listening to feedback nd well, taking it to heart. HoW had some hiccups but hopefully TTK wont fall into the same pitfalls...Im in cautiously optimistic mode. Granted being the consumer whore I am, I have the collectors pre-ordered.

Bungie has lost a lot of the prestige it once had in my eye because of Destiny, not really because of the gameplay itself but rather the way they have decided to release the game and how they talked about it when it was revealed, they went on and on about how it;s going to be a 10 year game and how it's going to be this big world that keeps getting more content in a way that's completely different to anything else out there. What do we end up with? Over priced dlc and already confirmed sequels that works like any other game out there, nothing revolutionary at all. It just means we can't believe what they say when introducing Destiny 2.

It's even shittier to see them give this kind of response back in defense of the pricing.

This is also the biggest problem. It's like they're still building it as they go, rather than truly expanding the core experience; as an early player, it's unacceptable that the game still isn't what it could and should've been from the jump, even with positive steps being made.

This I can agree with. And all those reddit posts about what happened to this game are more and more believable.

Oh, fuck you very much Bungie.

I'm not giving them a single fucking penny after reading that. It made me actually angry. Not just vaguely annoyed, but angry. I hope the expansion falls flat on its face.

I really don't understand the collectors edition complaints. The in-game bonuses are negligible junk that doesn't remotely affect the game in any meaningful way. The game already has a shitload of shaders and emblems, having a couple I can't access doesn't matter in the least.

As for the DLC costing $40, it also doesn't make sense to criticize it before we know what's actually included in it. I'm all for raising the pitchforks if it looks like a ripoff but right now we don't actually much anything about it.

$40 converting into £40 certainly is a ripoff though. That definitely needs to be corrected before launch.

That comet "leak" from January seems more and more true. And sad, considering it didn't show that much content for the expansion. If the Hive Ship really is the new area and not an actual planet... well, I can see why Bungie is hiding the details from us then haha

I was done with Destiny once I completed the main story, sold it that day. Too much grind and too much dlc.

This interview did nothing to draw me back in and has had the opposite effect.

He sounds like someone who regrets switching Microsoft out for Activision.
I honestly have no idea how anybody at Bungie thought this was a good idea in the first place. Were they the only publisher willing to foot the bill? And how was Microsoft not willing to keep these guys around to create a brand new IP that would've been exclusive to their console?

It just seems like really bad decisions all around by all three parties involved.

ehh. After buying the (first) collector's edition, I think I'll just wait until Destiny 5 (if that) before I buy anything else from them, in order to minimize any more screwage.

sarcasm? I can't tell.

That preorder "bonus" just let you buy weapons from the Vanguard quartermaster a little bit earlier in the game than you would have been able to otherwise. And they are all shit weapons anyway.

(However, when the game updated for the first DLC, they removed the best non-exotic rocket launcher from the game. The "Zombie Apocalypse" typically has a lowish firing rate and very high stability (mine is pretty much at max stability), allowing you to use it like an absurdly powerful scout rifle. I still use it and see others using it in PvP. Annoying that late-comers will never get to have it.)

Can we get David Jaffey to interview Luke Smith and grill Luke about this expansion in the fashion Luke grilled David back in the day with "resistance sent to die".

It would be sooo sweet to have the tables turned.

I'm a big Destiny fan and there's no way you can convince me to re-buy the stuff I already own, just to get some new dance moves.

I can also state matter of factly that I wouldn't spend a dime on new dance moves, that should definitely be a simple game content update, not paid DLC.

I liked Luke back when he was on 1UP, but man, he is such a damn bullshitter. His response to not allowing for trading/implementing soulbound items.

"We've talked internally about stuff like soulbound before, and to do that right now feels like that would really be potentially disruptive for players. They've had this experience of passing weapons around between their different characters, and one day we're like, that weapon you used to use, Brad, you can't shift that to your other guy."

Yes, because no games have figured this problem out before! We've had "account-bound" stuff in MMORPGs for probably over a decade now. And this guy is one of their lead designers?

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Luke Smith? As in 1up Luke Smith who went and worked for Bungie?

The LE version would be good value at £54.99, if I didn't have the game and both DLC. But 40 fucking quid for the digital expansion, I think I'm out at that, thanks Bungie, needed to save my money for all the other games.

I dont buy that this is an Activision decision. Didnt Bungie leave MS because they wanted more control? Well, this is them in control.

Wow Luke, stay away from interviews, you sound like a fucking idiot.

First off all : LOL at trying to sell us a sparrow, shader an eblem.. 3 fucking things who are useless.

I'm not even that mad about the price, though this explanation why it would make sense is kinda offending to any Destiny player.

Holy shit at the answer about the options to spend money on Destiny.

There was another interview from e3 with Bungie where they were saying that they would try to make things right for year 1 players so IDK.

I still can't believe they're actually charging £40 for the expansion, that's the price most next gen games go for these days. 40 fucking pounds....fuck my life....I can buy Arkham Knight or Metal Gear Solid V for that price.

Well, yeah. I would rather do that - pay a few pounds or dollars or whatever - than spend money on things I already own.

"Well, we have nothing more to talk about regarding your opportunity to spend extra money in Destiny, other than The Taken King and the three versions we've announced."

Other than this quote making him sound like a complete prick, I'm actually kind of surprised; surprised that they haven't, and seemingly won't, add microtransactions to Destiny. It's really the perfect game for it and has the perfect fervent fanbase that would easily buy into them as well. Seems like easy money, and with Activision being the publisher, that makes it all the more curious.

Maybe we'll see them in Destiny 2.

Ghaleon, I appreciate how much you enjoy Destiny but man the shit that is going down is downright anti-consumer and you defending it is really coming off hollow.

Feels like this is another instance where they should have just kept quiet. But then again, I'm not one of those Destiny people who are still constantly playing so maybe I'm not the target.

What leak are you talking about?

I think he is totally wrong, people are jumping to conclusions here...Phobos is a new moon I think that is 1 new area, plus there is the dreadnaught (Which is supposed to be large), that's 2, plus there is rumoured to be new areas on existing planets? Maybe people should see what content it has before bringing the pitchforks.

I am glad they think it's worth $40.. unfortunately, I have possession of said $40 and disagree. They are competing with new games coming out at that price, and I just can't justify this expansion over a whole new game.

That's right.. it's sad to see what happened.

Granted, I bought Destiny at launch knowing what a shallow game it would be content-wise. I never purchased a DLC for this game but I probably would buy the game or Destiny 2 on PC.

This exchange is appalling.

Yup I feel as if the tech was final but the game, plot, meta and everything else was alpha at best. The rumours about a last minute gutting to ship just fit this game too well to accept that the core of that tale is true. What I find worse is this constant sense that Bungie are either unaware of the criticisms or regard them as being so irrelevant as to be unworthy of comment.

I think the problem is that they're telling people to rebuy the entire game to access the extra stuff.

It's the attitude behind it.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
What a failure of a response. Luke has become what he used to mock.

Couldn't help but think this myself.

Destiny fans must have been on groan-alert reading that. Non-fans like myself, read nothing to draw us back in. The EU pricing is absolutely absurd and well worth taking to task.

The entire thread is now a "luke is an asshole" etc etc yet he's a gaffer....

Anyways, still think the interview is pretty funny considering how upset that dude got about something everyone will forget about a week after launch.
