Remember, sexuality in Japan is not as taboo as it is here in the States and in other countries. This game is not supposed to have us stay in our comfort zones, there's going to be moments that bring us out of that. We've got child soldiers, racism, sexual violence, amputees, POWs, torture, human medical experimentation, etc. If anything this is NOT the game that should be appropriate to everyone. Quiet's boobs being a nuisance to you? That's just the surface, and I wouldn't recommend getting any more involved with this game.

People really need to understand the difference between sexuality and sexual objectification.

Realistic sexuality is utterly taboo in Japan, at an inherent level. It's one of the most taboo in the world. The birth rate is dropping. Children's schools are closing. Marriage rates are through the floor. It's one of the most de-sexualised places on the planet and sexual objectification in art is making it worse

Blurd, I don't know how much you know about Japanese culture, but he is an expert etc etc etc.

I wonder whether Quiet is a sort of Siren?

When he brings her aboard Motherbase for the first time, Kaz wants her dead, but Big Boss seems protective of her. Why would he just bring a supernatural being aboard? It seems a tad, extreme and counter productive.
Sure he says when the time comes he will pull the trigger, which brings me to my second point.

In the new trailer Big Boss is seen carrying her to safety, desperate to save her from the skull unit.

In old tales, a Siren is supposed to posses a beautiful singing voice that puts ships captains under their spell, while the rest of the crew protests to the captain not to follow the voice, ultimately the Sirens singing is a trap and ends in the ship smashing into the rocks and killing everyone.

Maybe in the nuclear trailer when we see the Motherbase soldiers going crazy, protesting clearly towards Big Boss it could be because Big Boss is under Quiets influence?
Maybe she's indoctrinating Big Boss to destroy Motherbase from within.

It's a crazy idea but the leaked video of Quiets theme with her singing, is, well, just beautiful and got me thinking of the Siren idea.

Looks like the engine got a significant boost in the last few weeks. LOD, shadows, and draw distances are all much improved since even the last E3 demo.

This was one of the biggest issues I had with GZ and the MGS5 footage. Always felt like there was enough overhead to improve performance.

Assuming this was PS4 footage.

So badass. Game is gonna play so well.

Wonder if the big twist will be that Hayter is voicing Quiet's tits.

AF and draw distance are pretty bad, I'll wait for the PC version then, damn two weeks will be long for sure !!!

Will we have a PC vs PS4 video comparison soon like they did with GZ ?

Do you really think any of that is going to be handled any more deftly than in past games?

Not sure I follow your logic here.

Not sure I follow your logic here.

There are a couple of great documentaries about it. Women are objectified heavily in a huge amount of Japanese art and culture and this is a) making men more interested in fictional women than real women (who they find, quote, 'uninteresting' or 'scary') and b) is making women less interested in men who have different interests/priorities. There's a great BBC documentary about the birth rate crisis in Japan and it goes into this. It's called 'No Sex, Please' on the This World series.

I'm jumping the gun a little bit re MGSV, which, as far as we know, handles all this very well. Paz in GZ was on the knife-edge, though. She was pretty one-dimensional and only just redeemed imo by a couple of aspects.

There's definitely a chance The Phantom Pain will lose it. But Kojima really seems to be trying to think things through logically and thematically in this game, so I've got faith he'll treat the female characters well.

Fulton + Mother Base will be a make-or-break for a lot of people I think. I constantly toss up between Peace Walker and MGS4 as to which is my least favourite in the series, the aforementioned feature in the former title contributing somewhat. But Phantom Pain sounds like it's doing a better job, and despite my reservations I like you loved Ground Zeroes far more than I expected. So *shrug*, wait and see I guess.

For me I think what leads to concerns is a combination of how silly and out of place the fulton mechanic looks and operates, combined with the whole pseudo RPG Mother Base bullshit which in my opinion has no place in Metal Gear. It disappoints me that instead of integrating the entire gear/upgrade/equipment feature exclusively into this massive open world and open ended mission structure, you have this stupid fucking R&D grind on the side to explore your options. It's most a taste thing though, as despite my cynicism I don't actually think Peace Walker did it poorly, it's just not how I would build the games and I don't feel it fits the overall philosophy. It's a really modern thing to do; take a design formula and resort to growing it via an arbitrary grind/XP/unlock system.

The most exciting thing about Ground Zeroes how it well it plays like Metal Gear Solid yet evolves the formula to larger, open maps. It's a logical step for the franchise and after MGS4 kinda retread MGS/MGS2/MGS3 very refreshing and interesting. The Mother Base/R&D/fulton stuff is just all a bit eh for my taste.

I feel broadly the same, but personally, I think these videos are really clearly showing how much it'll work as a grass-roots stealth action game, the management stuff aside.

Did you play Peace Walker, yeah? I think TPP is going to implement the whole R&D thing more seamlessly than Peace Walker ever did. As far as we know, in TPP 90% of the Mother Base can be done from your iDroid in the field. So chances are you can avoid Mother Base altogether bar the few times the game really demands you go there. Otherwise you will hopefully just be an operative in the field, for loads of the game.

Also remember that, as ridiculous as Fulton is, it costs money to do each time (more than shown in these videos) and is limited a lot by your surroundings (eg will get you spotted, doesn't work in doors or in low visibility, etc). I don't think it's as usable as much as people worry. In PW it was limited to set uses per mission, and I imagine Kojima has tried to keep the balance similar in TPP. It would be ridiculous if you could fulton everyone in the game world.

i know your original post was responding more to the poster about the japanese society but as a westerner i don't find women less interesting because of some visual pandering in videogames(i.e, Quiet's uniform).

i do agree that some depictions border on tasteless whoever imho most are juvenile at the very worst. i guess it all depends on the mindset of the player and the type of game they think they are playing.

This.. is actually a wonderful theory. It makes sense, and it fits the Moby Dick theme with the captain and ship parts.

All of this guy's videos are awesome:

He even does that with no reflex:

I love high level game mechanic manipulation in these games

This seems to be the same guy who did the ridiculous MGS3 videos with the monkey mask and croc cap.

I'm not sure if it's all one person or if there's more of them.

Just got round to watching this now.

Looks amazing. But if Quiet is going to constantly try and sing over the radio then she will be left for dead and be replaced with Diamond Dogs. Her murmuring happens way too much in my opinion.

Other than that tiny nitpick. Looks ace!

This alternate E3 video was exponentially better at getting me excited!

Quiet humming is a really cute touch. I do hope mouse control will be good though. Aiming and walking looks so awkward. Not sure if it's the FOV, gamepad or player.

The blast arm part just incredible :D It kinda reminded me of the rocket scene in MGS1.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
IT'S FROSTBITE 3, BABY!

Oh you.

I think you can tell her to shut up, otherwise I have no other idea what her skill "Quiet" could mean.

Definitely the player, seems like Jackie purposefully sucks at aiming during action sequences
