This is the dumbest thing that ever happened in the NBA

Nah, remember when the Brooklyn Nets did anything throughout their entire existence? That was dumber.

Cuban, that you?

I agree it's dumb, but shame on the Mavericks for not making sure Jordan was absolutely signing with them. In the post-decision era, only a signed contract means you've guaranteed a player's on your team.

The Mavericks didn't have a choice, players can't sign contracts until midnight tonight. The decision isn't really related to this either since LeBron never told Gilbert that he'd come back.

Nobody can sign yet. There's a week between free agency opening and being able to sign contracts.

Right, they didn't have a choice to wait. But I'm saying that even the best reasons (Lebron's hometown/Jordan's max contract) mean nothing until that contract's been signed.

Before Lebron, I'd argue a player would rarely think about going back on a public commitment like that. But it's a players world now, and James is the King.

Wait a team and its players are doing everything they can to keep a good player on the team? And this is bad? Heck this makes me actually like them.

It's hilarious, but it's also pathetic that Jordan can't just tell the Mavs outright he's going back to LA.

Oh shit this is amazing! I was disappointed to hear that Jordan was leaving the Clippers. Hope he stays with them.

That Chris Broussard tweet is the most amazing thing I've ever read, and I just want to run that scenario through my head for days to come.

Wait, isn't this breaking a verbal contract? Can the Mavs sue DeAndre?

Not in this world. Verbal agreements mean nothing for athletes - no services have been rendered, and there have been nothing preliminary agreements. The CBA protects players from all agreements until the contract's been signed.

This is how I imagine Jordan reacts when his agent tells him to call the Mavs and tell them it's over.

A little pathetic, yeah. But freaking hilarious.

Could be wrong, but verbal agreement doesn't mean anything in terms of legality. Anyone who made a verbal agreement can back off, it's just not common for someone to do this.

Why would they do that? If they convince a court the verbal agreement is binding, then they admit they violated the CBA by signing a free agent before they could, and the contract is voided , anyways.

Unless you want something like this to happen to the mavs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Smith_(basketball)#Timberwolves_salary_cap_scandal

Anyways, it's not happening. Verbal agreements don't mean anything under the CBA

The problem is that you have this window where players can make verbal agreements but can't sign the actual contract, and since the Mavs assumed they had Jordan, they couldn't make other moves they needed.
I always like seeing Cuban getting taken down a peg, but they need to fix this shit.

p.s.
The Clippers are just dickheads though, people rightfully hate that flopping and whining team, I'll take any chance of taking shots at them, even if this is something I would hope my team would do.

Talk to Boozer about that and how he feels now in his career

Serious question. Does Jordan's agent hold power of attorney to sign contracts? Could he still sign with the Mavs right before the Clippers get Jordan to sign? I'm just trying to think up all scenarios.

If he did there would be a shitstorm the likes of which we've never seen.

I kinda want it to happen now.

I couldn't care less about the NBA, but I'm all for anything that displeases Mark Cuban.

I seriously doubt that, but even if it was possible, an agent that sign a contract against the explicit wishes of his client will never ever get another job, and rightfully so.

Edit: well, now I want it too.

Nope. But DJ also can't sign without his agent signing and notarizing a certification.

Wouldn't that mean DJ is mentally unstable?

Well I guess mavs may have a case after all.

I seriously doubt he can do that and if the rumors are true about how the agent was stringing DeAndre along to try and get him to sign with his buddy Cuban there's a good chance he won't be his agent for much longer.
