Any news about how upgrade will be done? I have Win10 and Win 8.1 on dual boot in here. I would be extremely happy if I could somehow merge Win10 and Win8.1 and have the new Win10 running on my PC, but I dont believe that will happen.

You definitely can't combine OS installs like that....no idea how that would even work hypothetically.

If you've done an upgrade to Windows 10 directly from 7 or 8.1 via Windows Update for the Insider program, you've seen something similar to what you'll see in the final version.

One option would be to wipe one of them and just expand the other's partition.

On another note, I've just installed the latest Windows 10 Preview (10163). First time using 10...loving it.

I installed on two older Dell desktops I got for free from work and just have hooked up to my TV while I set them up. I'm loving the new UI and everything has just worked so far, including my USB WiFi adapter. Installing some games via Steam now.

Well, it looks like Windows 10 hosed my PC. I installed Win 10 on a Dell Inspiron 20 3043, since it's not my main PC. Now, the PC boots, everything seems to load and it just freezes.

Searching the internet, it looks like the only way to roll back to Win 8, or even boot into safe mode is, available only after a good boot/login. Did they really disable the F8 key for options?

How can I get this PC back to original, I'm even willing to do a clean wipe.

Try inserting the disc with W10 again and see if a repair or clean install is possible?

So I guess I'll try asking here:

I made the reservation for the W10 upgrade on Windows 7.

Now I want to upgrade my SSD before Windows 10 hits by the end of the month. Dou I still get the upgrade when reinstalling W7? Do I have to cancel my reservation first, or will it just pop up again by itself?

Dont bother with reinstalling. Just get a hold of Clonezilla and take an image of your old HDD and load it up on your new SSD. Simples.

My W7 install is pretty old (like 1.5 to 2 years). Won't I just take all the garbage with me that way?

I'd like to do a clean install of Windows 10 on both my win7 machines. But my understanding is you have to upgrade first, then create a windows 10 DVD and do the clean install. Can anyone confirm this?

Everything I've seen says you have to do an in place upgrade initially.

Just installed the insider preview after reading about delayed rollouts. The RTM is rumored to be released today, so we'll see.

Just received NewEgg's new deals and again NewEgg has the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO on sale for $162 this time with free shipping.

Odd promo code that only takes a couple bucks off also that I'm guessing is meant to really be a discount for three day shipping or something.

Weird, since today I get a Windows 7 invalid product key. Few years ago I had bought a laptop and Windows key is on the laptop sticker. On next boot I got the verification message, typed the key and it failed to verify

First time it happens. It used to validate without issues.
Are Microsoft clearing genuine Windows 7 keys too? I was hoping for a normal upgrade to Windows 10

edit: it turns out it was a driver change or something that forced me to retype the key. Now it works fine. But I lost the wallpaper theme...

Looks very tempting. It would be the best way to experience Windows 10.

They are on 10166 now, old news.

I guess I should start leaving my computer on, downloading 10166 now, lol.

Edit: Also, should I just give up on Microsoft fixing the HD audio bug and get used to my headphones? I've not been able to use my speakers since 10130.

I've tried every work-around I could find online and nothing works.

I really can't wait to switch to Windows 10, my PC needs a format or something as Firefox keeps micro freezing when I'm typing which is extremely annoying! It's a shame Edge won't have addons in the beginning as I'm not a fan of surfing without a condom.

Since the new build seems to be RTM or very close to it, would now be a good time to wipe and reinstall? It's been a long time since I've started fresh, I just wonder if there's any advantage to waiting for the release build.

So I've got two issues so far on build 10162 and I'm wondering if its just me or not.

First issue is in relation to Microsoft Edge. Great browser and with add-on support it will be even more amazing, however right now I have an annoying issue of a blank blue tab when I shift it from the original tab bar that I open it on to its own. Basically when you drag it to a new screen or its own window. The weird thing is the page still seems to be rendering as I tested it with a YouTube video and while there was no picture sound was still playing.

Second issue is a strange one. My cursor has suddenly turned rather large when I try to select text/hover over text. Could that be an issue of my GTX 770 or Windows 10 itself?

This wi-fi sense thing sounds fucking stupid. Why would anyone want to give everyone on their facebook, skype and other contacts full access to their home network?

On top of that you have to make sure that anyone you let onto your network doesn't have it enabled or else it shares your network with everyone on their contacts list.

The large cursor is a bug with Nvidia driver 353.50 you just downloaded.

Isn't the whole point of Wi-Fi sense to allow constant access to decent Internet quota on the go? I don't see that big of a deal considering you could just lock down a new Wi-Fi profile and share that.

Ah I see, cheers. Tad annoying but hopefully they can fix it up quickly.

You can turn it off but I can see many people just clicking through and not knowing that they are sharing all the networks they connect to with everyone on their facebook, skype and other contacts list. I certainly don't want some people on my contacts to have full access to my home network.

I'm not sure how wifi sense is supposed to work. But starting a new profile doesn't cut it since everyone on your network has to turn it off. The only way to truly opt out is to add _optout to your ssid. Which is obviously suboptimal.

How is Windows 10 these days? Is it close to being viable as a full time OS for gaming and general tasks?

I have been using it as my day-to-day for the past two weeks.

It seems fine.

Would you say there is a noticeable improvement over Windows 8.1? (or 7 if you're using that)

Still has the same issues as Windows 8.1 (i.e. not all old Vista machines can use fast boot due to old drivers).

I predict some people who haven't upgraded to Windows 8 / 8.1 will have a few surprising issues when they upgrade to 10.

If you're on Windows 8.1 now and have zero problems, then you will most likely be OK unless you use Soundblaster.

It doesn't feel much different. Faster. But I went from an HHD to an SSD so that is a factor as well.

I don't feel like this is a monumental upgrade. There is just a lot of UI changes.

It's stable.

I cant verify this is how it works, but in this faq:

https://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/How-to/wp8/connectivity/use-wi-fi-sense-to-get-connected

When you connect to a password-protected Wi-Fi network later on, select the Share network with my contacts check box if you want to share that network.

It makes it sound like it is an opt-in per password protected network.

Here is this as well:

https://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/How-to/wp8/connectivity/wi-fi-sense-faq

You share with your contacts, but not their contacts. The networks you share aren't shared with your contacts' contacts. If your contacts want to share one of your networks with their contacts, they'd need to know your actual password and type it in to share the network.

I use a Sound Blaster XFI Xtreme Gamer sound card, what's the issue?

Windows 10 feels like a reskin of 8.1. Build 10166. It's ok. Battery life (testing on Lenovo) has gone down from 7.

I want to kill Quick Access. Edit: Found out how to change it via right click menu.

Yeah this just an easy way to get friends and family on your home wifi when they are there without having to tell them the password or take their device and enter it yourself. Actually a pretty nice feature.

So I was stupid and reinstalled Windows 7 using an old disk, only to find out that the code was used. How can I reserve Windows 10 without the activation code?

Really? I picked up nearly half an hour of battery life when I upgraded to 10162, and it's been getting steadily better since then (also Lenovo, Y500).

For those of you using Windows 10 recently, how buggy is it? I recently heard about some issues.

I just bought a 250gig SSD and a have a 2 year old install of windows 7 on a 360gig HDD just screaming to be formatted.

I wont lie, I have VERY cold feet. If I buy home edition will I regret it? And no I don't want to do the upgrade, full formatted and fresh install with a W10 DVD or bust.

You can change Explorer to open on My Computer by default. At first Quick Access annoyed me, but I gave it a chance and found it to be very useful in some situations. Unlike the "Recent Places" from 7 and 8 it's very fast and shows actual recent places and files (instead of random folders I never actually accessed). It's great to grab a file I edited/saved/downloaded without having to navigate to its location.

For example, if you take a screen capture (Win+PrintScr) it will be the first item there, so I can quickly grab the file to upload or edit directly from the Open File window. Same when downloading files and loading them up in programs they are not associated with.

Using the RTM build (10240) right now that was released to people in the program and it feels pretty solid. Edge seems to have received a pretty big update and it doesn't seem to be using as much memory as it was.

ddoes it freeze if you click the "run" button on the download dialog? probably just my machine but the build before 10240 was causing me to end task all the time.
