Absolutely amazing movie. My God, we all had smiles and wide eyes from start to finish. I don't know if it's considered cool to gripe about certain things in the movie, but everyone I was with just had such a wonderful time. Go see it NOW!!!

Pietro has much stronger ties to the X-Men side of Marvel, while Wanda is more connected to the Avengers. I'd imagine that's why he died- because he was only a vehicle to get Wanda on the team. Also why you probably won't see Wanda in more than a cameo in the X-Men movies
 
just saw the movie....man those cap and thor combo was sick everything was awesome i was thinking that ending credit them in statue form better be a collected-able with the Blu-ray

Weakest of the MCU movies.

Movie was all over the place and the Intro CGI was really bad...like really really bad.

Ultron was worthless

I guess Winter soldier spoiled me..ah well.
 
All this Spidy debate but it occurred to me that he's both a Street and ...Big(?) Hero. His powers are perfect for an urban setting but still capable of taking on the universe.

Squirrel Girl exists for that very reason.

Spider-Man took out Firelord-- a herald of Galactus. It was poor writing but thats my point.

And street level guys can't take out Venom nor Carnage. You need powers for these guys.
 
How hard is it to grasp that Spider-Man is both Street Level and top tier? It doesn't matter how amazing his abilities are, the truth is that Spider-Man regularly handles big and small threats to New York. Nothing is "above" him. I've been reading Spidey comics for a long time, and he's always done both. Even current comics will have him occasionally thwarting a bank robbery or mugging in between defeating the more powerful foes.

Not even close to an insult.

There is a LOT of crime going on in New York that supergroups like The Avengers and X-Men would scoff at. Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones can only do so much. Having someone like Spider-Man, who is a high level hero, helping out when he's able is a big plus to their cause.

The reason why Spider-Man will NEVER look past street level crimes is because a street level crime is what cost his uncle Ben his life. No matter that he outclasses every thug and mugger on the street, he will do everything he can to make sure that not a single New Yorker has to experience what he did when he lost his uncle. He's not "above" that.

Anyway, back on topic, I liked the movie designs of Ultron in the movie, but yeah, I would have loved to have seen number 1 and number 8 in the movie (from the above posted images, those are the ones I like the most).

He's also a guy with a knack for inventing things to help him defeat a certain foe, and has a ton of friends. Many of the times he relies on one of these two things to defeat a foe who may outclass him.

Other times he just outwits his enemies, like he did with Phoenix'd Colossus and Magik during AvX who are basically two cosmic-level threats.

The term is street LEVEL, meaning that that is where his usefulness lies.

Every superhero can and does fight at the street level. In fact, this is where 90% of comic book heroes start off. But if they are able to fight above that level, they themselves are NOT street level. It is a form of classification not an indicator of what they actually do.

Peter chooses to stop petty criminals because of how his Uncle dies. That has nothing to do with the fact that he clearly outmatches street level threats.

You can't be both street level and top tier. You're either or, and Pete is not street.

Yeah this makes sense if we're talking about where heroes cap off. Spider-Man seems to do well against guys that seemingly outclass him.
 
Spidey has his own entire rogues' gallery. he's a street level hero but he's a blockbuster character, marvel's iconic solo hero. So he frequently gets involved in galactic and critical events due to his popularity as a character.

The Punisher took on Electro. Batman takes on Clayface. Taking on superpowered foes isn't exclusive to the big leagues.

I already mentioned Batman. He's in a special place amongst comics in that because of his popularity, he's always depicted as punching above his weight-- even when it doesn't make any sense.

Punisher can take on Electro but he never took on Electro at his absolute best-- Parker has.

Peter is above Captain America. Cap is barely street level. Simple mathematics no?
 
Not sure if there are any fans of MovieBob here but he did a review of the second movie (he liked it) and also an episode of his new web show "Really That Good" on the first movie. If you got 40 minutes of your day to watch a really good analysis piece I recommend watching it. It's a show where he examines older movies that were incredibly highly regarded and where he tries to dissect why they still hold up to this day.

In the wake of said episode I just decided to rewatch the first Avengers... and really, I'm still amazed by how well it holds up. It's kind of amazing actually to behold still to this very day, it wasn't all just hype that led it to where it is. It's pretty clever how the central conceit of the movie, or really even the main point of the movie, always draws itself back to "is combining these characters really going to work?" You're going to assume that the good guys are obviously going to win but can they actually marry the concept? If you rewatch the movie and treat it as if it were analogous to the whole MCU experiment, it ends up being kind of mind blowing.

"Was that the whole idea behind this, some kind of statement?"
"A promise."

Man, I kind of love the first movie more than I realized.
 
Finally got around to watching it, mini-review ahead:

+Hawkeye development (love the avenger quote)
+Black Widow backstory
+Vision is intriguing
+Thanos confirmed to be able to walk
+Ultron's intro
+Hulkbuster scene is cool and memorable, thought Hulk would win for sure

- Quick cuts, a lot of them. I hate to sound like Kyle's cousin from Southpark but god damn that irritated the shit out of me.
- Vision barely has any screen time
- Ultron developing into a quip throwing punching bag as the movie goes on
- A lot of things happen, but not necessarily important or it feels like there's nothing pushing the overall MCU story forward in big leaps
- Anticlimatic finale, essentially Ultron in his "indestructible" metal gets annihilated by the laser beams and scarlet witch rips apart his armor.
- It became avengers vs zerg which I was hoping it would avoid after seeing trailer 2.
- Quicksilver death scene was unintentionally funny? I didn't feel anything for him and ultimately the quip when he died didn't help that.
- Ironman not owning up to his fuck up with Ultron, in fact pushing forward with it and Cap/Tony seem cool with each other at the end just because Vision worked out.
+ I actually didn't think the quips were overbearing or too bad. I thought Thor had some pretty funny lines. Really just quicksilver's death and Ultron (which I can partially forgive since it's based on Tony).


Most of the other complaints I have are kind of petty (accents and such) that didn't really hamper my enjoyment of the movie. Right now I think TWS > Iron Man > GOTG > Avengers > CA > Avengers 2 = Thor > rest in whatever order.

Ultron wasn't made of the metal was he? Wasn't that the point of the other?
 
So I wanted to splurge and go for the full 3D IMAX experience for this movie, but the reception has been a bit more... lukewarm than I was expecting. It's a 75 on RT right now, compared to the 90+ for the first one.

Is this just a case of the second one being good, but not reaching the incredibly high expectations of the first? Sorry for not reading through the thread. Wanted to avoid spoilers.

IMO yes, it obviously doesn't have the high points of seeing these heroes on screen together for the first time but I think its a much better and more entertaining film. The choppy editing is the only real problem I have with it, other than that I think its worth the big imax screen (or if you have a nearby tjeayre with a huge 2D screen - the 3d conversion is nothing to write home about)
 
Spidey's been kind of more than Street Level for a long while now. He still fights on Street Level, but he's also an Avenger and was a member of the Fantastic Four.

What holds him back is his manner of engagement (altho in the current stories he knows Iron Fist kung fu, he's still pretty wild and instinctual), his lack of meticulousness -- preferring to think on the fly, his low durability, and his usual method of holding back. The guy can take anyone's face off with a single punch if he wants -- SpOck accidentally does it to Scorpion, even when trying to hold back.

But I think the movie wants a young kid and by that point he was very much solely Street Level.
 
I enjoyed it, the movie was about what I expected.

Hawkeye actually not being a cardboard cutout anymore is nice.

Visually the movie is better looking than the first Avengers though it was very dark during indoor scenes.

Stark's MARK suit in the finale part of the movie looked weird and unfinished.

Ultron is another expected Marvel villain.

The movie was kinda choppy and felt like they left a bunch of stuff on the cutting room floor at the last moment and didn't have to time to make the transitions from scene to scene in a few spots less jarring.

Pietro was a pointless death to me, would have had the same effect of him saving Clint if he didn't die.
 
So, this week's Agents of SHIELD pretty much summarizes the movie's main plot, as well as spoiling a pivotal moment right at the start. If you were watching the show, definitely wait to watch the movie before seeing this week's episode.
 
I just watched this movie. Pacing was uneven and transitions were often jarring, but it still was an entertaining movie. It seems pretty obvious that extensive cuts were done to the movie, so I hope for the BluRay release we get Whedon's original 3 hours cut.

So the
Mind Gem is pretty much Sauron's One Ring right? An object with a mind of its own that can mess with people's heads to achieve its objectives. That scene in the first Avengers movie were everybody is fighting each other while the camera centers on the scepter makes a lot more sense now.

Just to clear this up,
Tony and Bruce analyzed the AI contained inside the Mind Gem and used that information to complete the Ultron program right? They didn't actually turn the Mind Stone's AI into Ultron...?

Yeah, I nearly fell out of my chair at the suggestion Venom and Carnage are street level fodder. I can't possibly believe that anyone actually thinks that.

A good example is Venom (Flash incarnation?) clowning Captain America and very nearly killing him without breaking a sweat. Carnage is even more powerful. The only heroes that I can actually remember absolutely decimating Venom/Carnage were heavyweights like Hulk, Juggernaut and Ms. Marvel.

Saw the movie it was ok. It was too chaotic in places and things seemed to move to fast in the movie. I liked the focus on Hawkeye and the Vision was cool.
 
Fell asleep...

Maybe I am getting old but the camera cuts were just too quick for me to focus on and fully comprehend the action, I have the same issue with any transformer movie.

Disney set up new contracts for movies. X shows for y months.
I expect a release date earliest after Ant Mans release and I kind if doubt that it will be only a month to wait. At least two.
