After the PS3 slim the next question is...when does MS redesign the X360?

It's really long overdue for one, a die shrink would really help with the overheating issues and a complete redesign/shrinking could really boost the systems image again. Do you think it's time for a X360 redesign?

That's hard to say... with the PS3, even though the shell stayed the same, there were pretty significant internal difference between the launch unit the current 80GB model (someone post the JPG). Even thought the 360's had different revisions, internally it hasn't changed that much at all. It's hard to say.

The don't.

At least, I don't see it happening. Sure, they'll probably shrink the die size again to cut costs but I don't think making a slimmed down version of the system would help cut costs much. The 360 hardware (in terms of the case design and cooling) is pretty simplistic to begin with.

The console will have to bring that power brick internally first and then they can start shrinking the overall chassis. Also they need to get rid of the tray. I don't see it all happening.

edit: With the PS3 system it was pretty apparent it would happen sometime in the future because a long time ahead (2007) we saw drastic improvement and restructuring. As far as I know there isn't a hint of this in todays X360 consoles.

We kinda need one. A tray-loading console in this day and age seems a little dated TBH...

Don't care what it looks like, but Microsoft needs to make a new 360 from scratch. Everyone I know that has a 360 is on at least their second console. I think I'm on #6.

That's true. There was a huge reduction in size and complexity of the 80gb/160gb ps3 board versus the launch units. It was basically begging to be redesigned.

Does anyone have comparison pics between the current 360 motherboards and the originals?

I don't expect them to, at least not in terms of changing size/shape of the exterior cabinet. I expect them to move right on to their next console.

The important parts of the 360 have been upgraded numerous times already.

Switching to slot-load wouldn't need a new 360, it would just need a custom slot-load dvd drive and a new faceplate.

as many problems are the big 360s have, i dont think i would trust a slim one. if MS does release a slim 360, i would wait awhile before buying one (if i didnt already have one)

Yeah, probably in time for the natal launch. But Sony could redesign the ps3 again like they do with psp.
A new edition each year? That would be awesome :o

They already had plans to redesign the 360 way before it launched.

The whole architecture was designed so that it could be redesigned again half-way through the current gen.

Source? It's been a while.

I'd buy one if it had a more acoustically sound design. They have the right idea with the duct but those two little fans on the rear exhaust have a bad (whiny) sound profile.

Coordinating a hardware overhaul with the Natal launch is probably the smartest thing to do at this point. They'll lose ground in the meantime, but by effectively launching a "new" console at a competitive price they could have a monstrous holiday 2010 and beyond.

I don't think console redesigns on their own (ie. w/o price drop or major new features) spur sales more than a very brief and small bump, so I'm not sure why they'd want to. Unless they want to rework their image with Natal next year, which is not entirely unlikely.

Totally possible, have u seen how much space there is in there? If they get the cooling right and somehow make a lush looking console better then it is already then they would totally be onto a winner.

Man if they do a slim 360 I would like to see a slim Ps2 sized one...and a $50 price drop? I would have to buy a 360 with my Ps3 then...

If they don't announce a redesign next year then we better get used to the models we have now. They won't bother to redesign a console 3 years before the next one.

Sony sends some of their hardware engineers over to MS, and MS sends some software guys over to Sony. Win-win.

The real question is.. can they? And is it even worth it for them at this point? MS isn't too great on hardware, so im not sure if they would devote so many resources to pump out a slim model, only to have another RROD event blow up in their faces. It's not worth it for them IMO, but who knows?

I'm all for a redesign and will buy another console if I can transfer over everything from my current 120GB HDD to a theoretical redesigned system. I have a feeling that my current 360's GPU is on it's last legs so the timing is a bit off but hopefully it'll last.

they might feel lucky (punk) with the GPU/CPU being combined deal we keep hearing about, and release THAT in the slimmed down model. who knows though.

Natal Launch + 360 redesign= Holiday of Awesome.
I love it when people nail this stuff in the first post. :lol

And they've been busy redesigning the innards to, how to put it, not break left and right. I suspect the RRoD issues derailed their plans a bit.

But Natal will be the first external revision.

On that note, I wonder if that means we won't see a price cut next year - instead, Natal will be added and the prices kept level.

While I won't get the PS3 slim as I like my PS3 fine the way it is. I would totally get a slimmer, slot loading 360 that has quieter fans.

That's my expectation as well.

While Natal is meant to bring in the casual market, taking the time to redesign the system (making it smaller, sexier, but most importantly undeniably reliable) could bring back a lot of goodwill from the hardcore segment. They could get the hold-outs fearing the RROD and a bunch of existing 360 owners to upgrade.

Really, if they joined forces they'd make the best damn console man has ever known.

it would make sense around the the launch of natal... repackage the system.

- Smaller Innards, Slimmer Model, Fixed Controllers, Multiple Colors*, Natal Bundled In, Demos*

I could also imagine a repackaged arcade model with hard drive standard.

in any case... next year definitely.

depending on the success of the ps3 slim...the "360 slim" could come before natal... like spring 2010 with a fall launch for the natal bundle.

I don't think there will be a re-design, I mean there is no precedent in Xbox history. All the work is going to go into the innards and the cooling system so that they 360 is finally able to have a failure rate lower than 50 percent. Also, there is the whole faceplate thing, they will not be able to sell over priced faceplates with a redesign (not to mention other expansions that require the shape of the Xbox 360 to remain the same). Sony doesn't sweat these details, they just don't care, but Microsoft, they want to maximize their profit from inexpensive plastic doo-daads.

The problem is everyone has a different vision and egos get into the way...like Sony and Nintendo with the SNES CD-ROM.

I like tray loading though.

If/when it RROD's you can get your disk out, and you don't have the dust/smoke issues the Wii has
