Fighting Games Weekly | July 20-26 | No Gods or Kings, Only Tears

Any news on a console release? I remember that UNIEL took a long time to release on console.

Nope.

Just pretend it doesn't exist. It's basically a rebalance with one new character.

Read the tweet again dudes. There's a #Kappa at the end.
lol

#Keppo

Oh, I have to click on the link to see it. I didn't bother to since I was on mobile.

So did Mr. Wizard even try to justify the ArcSys hate, or did he just realize there's no point since it's so obvious at this point.

Not just that, but Persona players not getting golden sticks, despite Smash (which doesn't use sticks) and Killer Instinct/Tekkem (which got fewer entrants) getting them (even ignoring the Friday slot vs the latter 2).

This is absolutely ridiculous for those players.

God damn, I didn't know about this. I would be livid if I won and that happened to me. "Where the fuck is my golden stick?!"

why robots tho
Why not?

We have games with furries, we have a hundred fighters with animu waifus, we have many fighters with regular looking dudes in gis, we have games with horror genre creatures etc.

Not many fighters with robot representation. I know there's Gundam but that's an established IP, it's cool to have a new robot IP to play around with.

I did the same

That game is trash and it died last year when Justin won
Are you serious here? There was a Captain America in top 8. You should be thrilled.

That new Rising Thunder game has no SRK/QCF motion for special moves...

MEGATON!

I made a post a while back about a fighter that can use something like this although I use one special button instead of having 3 (and you would do specials by doing one direction + special). Cool to see someone actually use it.
That's called "Smash Bros.".

No gods? But ogawa, sonicfox, armada and momochi won.
I don't think you can call someone a "god" of a game before their first win. That covers all 4 of those, right? Or has Momochi won before?

Ogawa is a Zato god, but I don't think you can hand out a title like "god" to someone on a game's first Evo. Marvel gods all died, Leffen and Mang0 died in Melee, and Infiltration died. That's significant turnover in the three major legacy titles. The title feels appropriate within that context.

With the backing of the Cannons and S-Kill, is Rising Thunder a shoe in for Evo 2016?

this is actually something i'm really worried about in the long run, haha
although i also don't think they're dumb enough to shove it into the spotlight that quickly given the potential hellstorm it could raise

Breh people play Smash and Marvel...

Sounds like someone is salty because they lost some bet.

"Oh noes Justin didn't win... kusoge/random game confirmed!!!!"
It's weird how some folks play Marvel for years, then quit and talk shit about how awful it is. Ditto for SFIV.

Rising Thunder 3rd last game before SFV and Marvel 3. Of course.

It's weird how some folks play Marvel for years, then quit and talk shit about how awful it is. Ditto for SFIV.
It's almost always related to some earth shattering experience they go through. Like they experience a super salty defeat and they swear the game off forever. And Marvel with the game it is, you run into that constantly.

It seems hard to imbue robots with character I think which is why most are often avatars and tools for other "real" characters. I'm interested to see what they do with it. Pocket Rumble is also another game in development that's using single direction + button for execution of specials.

When else can someone call a game shit?

If they barely play it = shut the fuck up scrub, you didn't even play enough to learn the game

If they play too long = shut the fuck up scrub, if you hated it that much you wouldn't be playing it

I think Marvel is really gonna drop off, even more so than this last year. As sad as it is, I feel like that was the last real Marvel major.

See above.

It all depends on how FChamp, JWong, and ChrisG take this year's results. JWong will probably ramp up his game for next year and study the Hulk matchup. He's grounded, and he loves Marvel too much to give it up. FChamp and ChrisG are more emotional and inconsistent.

I will say I heard the word esports more than a few times when talking about SFV :3

If SFV takes a leap in popularity over SFIV- as an e-sports title it will be on par with some of the bigger names.

I could easily see high six-figure amounts for EVO and Capcom Cup if that happens.

With the backing of the Cannons and S-Kill, is Rising Thunder a shoe in for Evo 2016?

PC + F2P means hella e-sports too.

I don't see any of the main events besides Persona falling off next year, only to be replaced by SF5. Unless one of the smash games falls off main event too, or the game itself blows up, I don't think it makes main event.

It'll definitely be a side tourney at least assuming it gets a release date before next EVO.

That said, the whole Momochi/Infiltration thing to me is why I think smaller casts in fighting games can be a good thing.

That said, not sure if it's commercially viable these days.

Why would a smaller roster prevent counterpicking? If anything, a larger roster delays that inevitable future.

You really trynna tell me ogawa isn't a gg god? Sonicfox is easily a modern day nether realm god. Armada is as much a smash god as chris g was a marvel god, or is chris not one since he never won evo? Then momochi us a no brainer, been the best sf4 player for a minute now

the special moves are on a cool-down timer.

what?

I feel like it's a pretty interesting idea. Might make for some very different balancing and decision making. Looking forward to see how that pans out.

(In before 1000 scrubs complaining about the cooldown on fireballs being too short <.< )

Yeah, but I am talking about folks that had hype and love for the game before, and then turned on it after quitting. Doesn't make sense to me. I'm the same as you - I'll talk all kinds of shit about the games I play, and how they could be so much better. I have a laundry list of improvements I want for Smash 4. But if you think the game is a total piece of shit, which is how I feel about USFIV, I don't see why you would keep playing it for so long.

Maybe because your pals play it and they're too lazy to try new/other stuff at all? Or it's easy to find matches because it's so popular? There's reasons like that.

lotta folks went into it expecting as much tbh, this is marvel's last "real" evo showing which is another reason why there was such a huge grind for folks to push themselves to that top skill level too

i get the feeling this was a huge factor in top8 too as the play from everyone was significantly worse than the previous day. there's always the hangover + lack of sleep aspect too but it sure looked like the nerves were super real too
rayray looked like 2011/2012 "that's my bnb i don't ever fuck it up" rayray for his first two matches

That's what I'm thinking. I feel like the gods won't be hungry for it anyway, I feel like their reaction will be more of a fuck this game it's dead anyway. Additional the gods were defeated handily. Will that tier under the gods still be hungry for it? I don't think so either unfortunately.

I feel like either one of two things are going to happen:

1) America gets enraged at the results and vow to never let that happen again, get hungry again and start grinding for next year's EVO. Then next year EVO it's back to business as usual with US domination in top 8.

2) What you said happens where Marvel drops off in the US but continues to hold strong internationally and EVO mirrors what happened this year with Americans having less representation.

I feel like #2 is going to happen mostly because America always say they are going to do #1 for USF4 and they still get bodied in the end. If anything this year's EVO for Marvel is going to light up a fire in the international community and there's already talk of some Japanese players wanting to step their game up. They drew the blood and now they are hungry for more.

No matter what happens, no way that Marvel doesn't return next year for EVO especially after what happened this year. I feel like if Justin had won then Mr Wizard might have retired the game but now it's like... nah he can't let US ride dirty like that!

Kind of agreed except for Ogawa. If there was ever any god of any fighting game series, Ogawa is definitely the god of Guilty Gear.

I feel like it's gonna be #1. It was too late for most Marvel players to get in on that Street Fighter money, but with Street Fighter V? I fully expect the Pro Tour money to double next year, too.

I just feel a total focus shift coming in the FGC.

Ogawa is a GG god in general, but you usually don't talk about "gods" at a game's first Evo. It's a legacy title that gets built over a few years of participation.

The "god" title also means that you are so far above the competition that you are nigh untouchable. ChrisG, FChamp, and JWong were so far above the rest of the Marvel competition that they made it look like a different game. Ditto for Infiltration and the 20XX Melee players. The point of the title isn't that no one is amazing at the game now, but that competition has ramped up to such a degree that there are no clear "gods" in the games anymore. Who the hell would have thought we would have Hungrybox in Melee grand finals? He took down Leffen AND Mang0.

If you take the title to mean "no one who was amazing at these games before won", then yeah, I agree it makes no sense. If you take the title to mean "everyone else has caught up to the gods, making them mortal (defeatable)", the title makes a ton of sense.

Maybe because your pals play it and they're too lazy to try new/other stuff at all? Or it's easy to find matches because it's so popular? There's reasons like that.
I think reasons like this just make you a loser. Play what you like.

That's what I'm thinking. I feel like the gods won't be hungry for it anyway, I feel like their reaction will be more of a fuck this game it's dead anyway. Additional the gods were defeated handily. Will that tier under the gods still be hungry for it? I don't think so either unfortunately.

Kind of agreed except for Ogawa. If there was ever any god of any fighting game series, Ogawa is definitely the god of Guilty Gear.
I think there are two ways the title "god" gets used - in reference to a generic player skill (Tokido, ChrisG, JWong - all amazing at multiple games), and as a reference to a player's skill in a particular game. I feel like in the west, we tend to use it more in the latter sense, and that's what is applied here. Ogawa is incredible, and I am a huge Ogawa fanboy, but this is Xrd's first Evo.

Like I said, it's more about the legacy games than the new titles.

Not many fighters with robot representation. I know there's Gundam but that's an established IP, it's cool to have a new robot IP to play around with.

If they had creative designs like Gundam, it would be fine, but the two robot designs showed off look extremely plain and generic.

(In before 1000 scrubs complaining about the cooldown on fireballs being too short <.< )

i mean, i get how recovery frames essentially do the same thing in other fighters, but wouldn't a cool-down timer just be a way for the oppenent to know whether or not you could perform a specific move? (example: opponent sees you can't use your dp for 5 seconds, proceeds to jump in with reckless abandon).

And now for the question folks ask themselves once a year...
Coqlmnn.jpg

For me, I'm gonna try to play more anime in general and Skullgirls. They had the hypest top 8.

EDIT: Also I really wish the title was Fighting Games Weekly|Frauds Among U.S.
lol
At present it would be TTT2, Yatagarasu and still learning Skullgirls.
Looking forward to SFV and Tekken 7.

the special moves are on a cool-down timer.

what?

First raised my eyebrow but then got curious to see how it would work.
Game looks real cool and some faces are behind it so im putting it on my radar.

That makes me think of an interesting what if scenario.

If Nintendo was supporting Smash 4 like Capcom is with Street Fighter, would that take the wind out of the Melee scene?

It depends on how the game is balanced, but this is how Marvel games work. Assists all have different cooldowns based on how strong they are. Morrigan's meter assist, for example, has like half a second cooldown. You can go nuts with it. Vajra has a much longer cooldown period, as does Plasma Beam.

That makes me think of an interesting what if scenario.

It needs gameplay changes for Smash Melee to die. Smash 4 is too defensive and slow to replace what people love about Melee.

Justin concentrating on USF4 for the rest of the year.

@JWonggg: EVO is over. What's next? Get situated with Norcal and only practice ultra until Capcom Cup is over. See you guys soon. #WongNation

I think reasons like this just make you a loser. Play what you like.

That may be true. But if i hardline on only playing the game i like best i'll mostly be playing randoms online. I think there's value in offline in person play even if it's in a game i don't like. At worst i can learn some stuff to take to my main game.

Yeah, that's what i'm worried about too. "Oh, his fireball ran out, time to do three forward dashes in a row!" So it will be interesting to see how it pans out, right?

Yeah, when you put it in that context that's fair. Well said
