Yes, but it won't be "genuine".

I think they want everyone on the new release, and they'll just continue nagging un-genuine users afterwards.

So, you still have to buy a legit version even if you upgrade to Windows 10 on a non-genuine version?

Is there currently a legit way to get this iso? What version number is it?

The ISOs out there are converted Windows Update files, but the direct link to them from MS has been blocked on browsers. The build you want is 10240.

Yes. I installed it on a seperate partition on my laptop for now until the N version is out, but I get a sexy watermark on my screen above everything telling me to activate it.

And you can use that ISO to update your existing Windows 7/8.1? Or do you need to install from scratch when using those?

My genuine copy of Windows 7 is unable to update, and all I get is 'Error 80072EFD' I once spent half a day trying to fix it, and unfortunately got nowhere.

Also the time before this, when I tried updating, it broke absolutely everything, and my machine was unusable. I had to use a System Restore to rollback every update.

I'm actually kind of afraid to use Windows Update, knowing that it just loves to break everything on my PC

What are my options?

Yeah, I just mounted it using Windows 8.1 built in tools and updated that way.

Clean install pretty much. Up to you if you clean install Windows 7 and do the upgrade, or Windows 10 straight away. Might run into issues on the latter, I can't get the installer to accept my Win 8 key, but it validates once inside Windows whereas my 8.1 N keys need the N version to be out.

The trick worked to get to 10240 from 10074 but I lost my activation on the way. Looks like I'll either have to reinstall W8.1 and upgrade after the 29th or wait for DreamSpark to hand out full W10 keys...

Bummer, I hate the Activate Windows overlay on the bottom right corner..

1) Wipe your drive clean
2) do a fresh install of 7
3) upgrade to 10
4) ???
5) profit

I like how there's built in game recording software in Win10 that pops up if you press the guide button on the 360 controller.

Does it? That's cool, didn't know that. Then again my Xbox One Controller has been bugged out since windows 10 access started.

That looks like disabling for every device, but that's what I would want anyway.

Is this manual disable option still possible with a Home Premium upgrade to 10, or is it an advanced feature? I seem to remember workgroups etc. being reserved for higher levels in older versions of Windows.
I'll let you know when I get home. My laptop has standard Home. I know it didn't have group policy.

Sweet on the recording stuff, didn't try pressing the guide button while playing last night. Once the wireless controller adapter is out and I upgrade this PC for the 4k TV, this is going to be brilliant.

Ugh...been stuck at "Making sure you're ready to install" for about 5 hours now upgrading from 8.1. My second attempt after I gave up yesterday. Tried killing start up services etc. with a clean boot, turning off real-time Defender protection, but hasn't helped :(

Mine did this, turned out for whatever reason the USB webcam held it up. Once unplugged, it was fine. Just rip out everything bar mouse and keyboard if you can.

Yeah tried that too. It's a laptop, so even unplugged the mouse and just used the track pad. I guess there's a bunch of other peripheral stuff that could be a bit harder to remove, given its form.

Install the RTM build and although it's mostly fine there is still a lot of bugs in Windows 10. SpecificallyI was unable to shutdown my pc using the shutdown button. It would just relaunch eecplorer. I had to shut off fastboot for the shutdown command to work.

Try disabling stuff in the device manager? It's as good as disconnecting stuff.

I've got my copy 'reserved' like many of you but I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger as soon as the option goes live. Will I be able to just sit back and wait until I feel I'm ready to actually do the upgrade?

8.1 runs perfectly for me right now and I'm in no hurry to see something break, etc. Also, is there any limitation or catch to the free offer beyond x amount of time?

Yep, just trying that now. No effect so far. Only things I have left alone are display adapters/mouse/keyboard/disk drives/network card etc.

My desktop hung at first, second time without the webcam it just popped up "Windows installation has failed", then hung again (HELPFUL!), so I did the following things. Not sure if any of them did anything, but good things to try:

Uninstalled Start8
Did the windows built in clean up for everything
Exited everything in the notification area
Chose "no" to the downloading updates before Windows 10 update

They're holding DX12 hostage, that's about it

Good suggestions, Another is to pop in your Windows disc/get an ISO and do a Refresh to make sure everything is at default. Though maybe the built in cleanup has the same overall effect :P

in outlook 2013 I no longer get the message "toast" pop out of the email. It actually doesn't even play a sound. Both settings are set in Outlook. Anyone else experience this?

As in some random generic key you found on the internet, or the generic key you get when upgrading Windows?

The former will likely be blocked from activating, the latter should be already activated.

There are often times when you need to install Windows 10 evaluation or testing in a virtual machine like VirtualBox for example. You may not want to activate it every time with your licensed product key that you use on a real machine. For that purpose, you can use generic keys for Windows 10 available from Microsoft, which will allow you to install the OS, but won't allow you to activate it. As long as you have an ISO image or any other bootable media containing Windows Setup files you can install the OS using a generic key
.

so if I was eligible for a free upgrade and used this generic key, provided by MS, how do I get a valid key after 29th, since I was qualified?

Super excited for Windows Hello! We're in a situation where we have 6 people using the same computer so switching profiles is a bit of a pain... facial recognition would go a long way to help that. Our Dell AIO is pretty recent so I checked the device manager and...

Yes! Turns out it's one of the 10 computers on the market with the hardware required. Never really knew what that fancy looking camera above the screen was used for.

Just followed the steps on my home installation and it worked fine!

You don't actually get a key so to speak, everyone who does the free upgrade has the same Windows 10 key. What you can do right now is enter your Windows 7/8 key as long as it's not an N or KN version (so Home, Pro or Ultimate) and it should activate. My Windows 8 home key from the BIOS on the laptop works fine entering it into Windows 10 (or at least it doesn't throw up an error, not activating as I want my Pro N on it), so try that now.

If the key doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall your old Windows and upgrade through it.

I decided to go for it and upgraded via the RTM iso - worked fine to start but now my Windows button has died. It doesn't respond to either left click or the Windows keyboard button.

Only recommended solutions I could find were to restart Explorer (didn't work) and switch to Tablet mode and back (nope). :(

Bugs like this one caused me to revert back to Windows 7. I'll wait until official release.

Upgraded from my legit windows 7 ultimate copy (activated) to windows 10 pro (activated). Good stuff and haven't encountered any problems yet.

I used to run windows 8.1 but my key stopped working for some reason but so far Windows 10 seems to be awesome.

So I'm reading some posts here and from the other threads

Those converted Windows Update ISO files, for example, that certain one posted in the "Windows 10 is out will DX12 games follow?" thread. Will that one still work? I've been sitting on that one for a while now.

Also I'd be upgrading from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10.

And I bought a nice new 500GB SSD just for Windows 10. 2 SSD's and 2 HDD party time

this happened to me on my Surface Pro 3. Have you tried updating? Either updating or a restart fixed it for me.

Should do, depends if it's the standard OEM or one of those custom ones. If it asks for a CD key when you try upgrading, back out as it's not going to work.

I'm fairly certain I have a standard OEM key. I bought it from Canada Computers like 4 years ago.

From what I've read it sounds like if it lets me go through I'd have to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 first, and then do a reset from Windows 10 if I want to keep my genuine key and do a clean install

At the same time it sounds like there'll be some Windows Store app that upgrades Windows 7/8.1 keys? Not sure about that one but it sounds like something that would makes sense.

I guess I'll install my new SSD first, backup my stuff to my external, then start the upgrade process

Not heard about the app store thing, but using your Windows 7 key on a clean install after upgrade should work. That key gets tied to your activation.

Did you do this recently? I was going to install windows 10 but i can't seem to get the insider page anymore. I am an insider but never installed any preview.

Is there any chance they'll bring Win10 to RT devices? I'm eyeing a 2nd hand 2520.

In January 2015, Microsoft unveiled Windows 10 Mobile which is the successor to Windows Phone 8.1 that is designed for both smartphones and tablets with displays smaller than 8-inches in size, supports ARM system-on-chips, and emphasizes a unified platform and application ecosystem with its PC counterpart. Although this new OS is a de facto successor to Windows RT,[not in citation given] Microsoft has explicitly deemed Windows RT devices to be incompatible with Windows 10, and stated that Windows RT devices would receive a separate update featuring "some" of its changes.[6]

So, you still have to buy a legit version even if you upgrade to Windows 10 on a non-genuine version?

Yup.

There was a whole lot of confusion earlier this year when the official Microsoft tech blog either a) didn't understand what was going on with the upgrade promotion, b) badly phrased the upgrade promotion, or c) sent the accounting department into cardiac arrest with an unexpected promise.

I've been wondering, if it says my Windows 10 is activated in System Information, am I good to go once it rolls out officially? I didn't use any generic keys to install it, just did the update option or whatever option lets you keep your files and settings.

Edit: Regarding transferring keys, wouldn't it just make more sense (and be easier) for Microsoft to just whitelist all Windows 7 and 8.1 keys for Windows 10 activation?

I would really advise against using any of the leaked ISO's that have been linked; The 29th is just a few more days away.

I'm sorry if this was asked before, but if I'm on Windows 7 right now, is there any way to do a clean install to 10? Or do I have to do an upgrade?

Any particular reason? About to upgrade my Win8.1 --> Win10 via this method after seeing fairly stable performance on a separate partition.

Upgrade and then reset/refresh using Win10 (essentially a 'clean' install).

May I ask why you would really advise against it? Is it not the final version perhaps? I've already upgraded/activated it, but I'm curious to learn what you seem to know. :-)
