Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

Smaller text, so more items can appear on screen, but not too small. And it just looks nicer in general IMO.

Installed Overgrowth ENB for New Vegas last night - looks fantastic, but it has a few issues with Nevada Skies, namely when it comes to drastic weather transitions. Can anyone recommend a better weather mod to use or a way to make Nevada Skies play nice with Overgrowth? Or should I just disable rain and storms?

I've been using Nexus MM and Fallout Mod Manager for my games, but I've heard of something called just Mod Manager is the better option.

Should I switch over to that? I've actually been meaning to do a clean install of my game to sort out the mods and such (I've re-DLed the mods to get all the up to date ones), so I can make my game more stable.

Does anyone use the Sprint Mod for Fallout 3? I have it installed and all, but when I try to run it's like I'm in sneaking mode and I actually move a lot slower.

If you have the same sprint mod that I have then your problem is that you're at max carrying capacity. You can't sprint if current carry weight is equal to your max carry weight.

Is there any way to increase draw distance indoors in FO3? I'm currently in the metro tunnels and the tunnel walls end some distance away and skybox (?) shows through. It is really annoying. :(

Help! I'm trying to install a couple visual mods before my first playthrough, but I'm confused. Is there a difference between using NMM or FOMM? Mods such as NMCs texture pack have several separate parts, and it seems using NMM would be the easiest way of installing them. There doesn't seem to be indications for using FOMM.

From what I can tell, it's not a big deal if you know how to use the manager that you're using.
I personally always use NMM since it works for all of the games I'm using it for and it's just convenient for me. Used it a ton for Skyrim and had no complaints so I'm using it for New Vegas now.

Also I wanted to ask: Having the Steam overlay enabled completely messes up my ENB and flora mods. Things become transparent and other major graphical issues are present. Turning off the overlay fixes these things.
Is there any way I can use Steam overlay while keeping these things? I googled around for a bit but I couldn't find any definite fixes. It's not a major issue but I get sick of alt-tabbing just to check messages or whatever.

Thanks! I downloaded and installed the first few. Texture pack, Nevada skies, and vurt's flora. They all worked without issue using NMM. I'll give ENB stuff a shot tonight.

Same thing happened to me with the ENB preset I used. I did what the nexus page recommended (turn off multisampling, AA and whatnot) and I still got fucked up things in textures that were only fixed by disabling Steam in-game overlay. Same thing happened to me when I played Morrowind with that MGO mod as well.

As an aside, I am loving the game. It looks great.

Started my first playthrough of New Vegas couple days ago and its been great. Wanted to keep mods to a minimum for the first playthrough, so just have a couple visual mods and MTUI.

I'm tempted to try a timescale adjuster though. The in-game day-night cycle seems way too fast. But i've read a couple comments online that messing with the timescale could screw up some quests/NPCs, any of you aware of such issues?

Also, I didn't choose the Wild Wasteland perk at the beginning and regret it now, looks like i'm missing out on some cool stuff. Can the perk be added through the console? Any issues with doing so?

Can't say enough how much I love the Mobile Truck Base. Functional, immersive, handy as hell to be able to move your base of operations from place to place to follow the action. My least favorite thing about player homes has always been how they tether you to a spot if you don't like to use fast travel, but MTB fixes both of those problems.

Anyone know if it can display energy weapons, or only normal guns in its rifle rack?

How exactly does it work? I mean, it appears automaticaly in those locations, or you have to enter it and choose your destination?

You enter your truck from the back, fuel it up with flamer fuel, and access a GPS menu in the cab to select from a series of locations you've visited before. You expend fuel to fast travel there, and the next time you exit your truck you're at the location you selected.

Interesting!

Thinking about starting a full pacifist run using the Stun mod:

I can still remember my very first Fallout experience from many years ago. I was on my first playthrough of Fallout 1, and I was fighting someone in Shady Sands (the first location I visited).

Through luck, I have managed to knock them unconscious near the obelisk. I also happened to have a rope in my inventory (the one you're supposed to use in Vault 15). My very first instinct was to approach the incapacitated opponent and use the rope on him for a non-lethal takedown. However, no matter how hard I tried, it was simply not possible to use rope on an unconscious person to tie the person up, and I was forced to kill him.

Four Fallout games later, we still have the means to render NPCs unconscious, and we still have the items to tie them up (no rope in New Vegas, but there is duct tape), but we still can't do it. I could no longer idly stand by and watch the injustice continue, so I have done what is only right - created a mod that allows to tie up unconscious NPCs. Non-lethal playthroughs have just been made a whole lot easier.

Anyone used it before?

I know I already quoted you but I'm curious, do you have to deal with stuttering when using this interface? Mainly when opening containers. There's a fix for the stutter on the Nexus but when I install it I just break the dialogue boxes, making them small and unable to fit the text.

I'm too lazy to boot up NV right now but there is usually a slight delay for me when opening up containers, but it's not too long and thus not a big deal breaker for me.

I previously had Fallout Mod Manager installed to run a couple of mods but switched to NMM

Do you need to mess around with loading order when installing a mod like YUP with NMM or is automatic? I now get a "This save relies on content that is no longer present" when trying to load, so I don't know if YUP is actually working or not

This message appears when a mod used in that save is no longer installed/activated. It can be a problem, or no. Depends on the mod.

Anyone know of the mod that allows you to change the values of almost anything in game? You could change stuff like the number of perks you gain per two levels, or make it so you get a perk every level. Other stuff was changing the base carry weight or the amount of XP gain.

My laptop is fairly recent, I'm interested in running some mods but I'm not sure how well it'll be able to run them. I'm more interested in weapon mods for both Fallout 3 and NV though, are there any good ones out there?

I forgot what an absolute headache modding these games can be. It's been over a year since I last played so I decided to install NV over this weekend. After probably 8 hours of meticulous care in installing mods I load it up just to find body textures are all busted. So I spent a couple hours trying to correct that issue only to end with a crashy mess. So it's back to square one next weekend assuming I'll have the time and desire to even attempt it again. I'd seriously consider paying someone to mod this game for me because I haven't the time for it myself.

Anyway, does anyone happen to have any role-play friendly mod lists that aren't full of things that have no business belonging in fallout? Seems half the guides I find use ridiculous body mods featuring impossibly beautiful supermodels, men chiseled like a Greek god, or weapons copy and pasted out of our timeline opposed to Fallout's alternate version.

I was in a similar spot you were in last month. Did you update the script extender and 4GB loader? I was about to DL all my mods from scratch, but then I learned that my files for the tech expansion were out of date. Once I downloaded those, I was able to play the game just fine without any crashes.

Also, be sure to check if there are any updates for the existing mods you have as well.

Keep the list small and simple if you aren't comfortable with spending hours and hours of your time tweaking, it's very easy to fall into the temptation of just downloading more and more mods. Less is more (of course, this is strictly a "Do what I say, not what I do" sort of advice since my load orders always end up humongous :P).

Don't have an up-to-date list to give you, but check these out, at least:

I think so. I made the mistake of following this so called 'lore friendly' guide:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aKHLNQUpK4qL6xxGDPj_KTbvzuG_7mYNu9_IF37bmLI/pubhtml

It was updated like a week and a half ago so I figured it'd be safe to follow along. Problems arose around part three though, when I began to notice some of the mods had ridiculous unrealistic models. Things like herculean bodies with tribal tattoos, and AA-12 shotguns that wreck the feeling of fallout for me. So I began to deviate from it and it all went south. I've completely deleted all files because I find it easier to start from scratch.

Last time I played New Vegas I had nearly 400 mods running. But that was when I wasn't working full time and had literally invested over a hundred hours just to modding and re-modding the thing. I had a few of the someguy series running back then. I remember the bounty ones anyway. Haven't heard of the other one you linked, must have been added after the last time I played. I'll check it out this week if I'm feeling up to another attempt. I just don't know if I have the time anymore.

When I remodded FNV a month ago I used that guide to remember stuff I had, but by middle of part 1 I went off on my own, vanilla FNV weapons are actually enough for me tbh. And there's not really any need for even WMX or WME.

Started playing FNV:Dust on the weekend and it's a pain in the ass, but it adds a different dimension to the game.

Main thing that pisses me off though is nobody has any food or water when you kill them, even decent groups in a certain area, like how are they even surviving? Let alone all the crack shots.

I decided to install this after watching a stream and prepare for FO4 but I forgot how much a pain in the ass it is to get it working on any Windows after 7. I'm on W10 x64 - what joy. Of course after just installing it Windows says it won't work without GFWL. Wasn't this upgraded to Steamworks? FalloutLauncher "works" but nothing happened when I pressed play. Then I downloaded the GFWL Disabler and now I can launch FO3, but it CTDs after the circle loads. So what now? Do I need to use compatibility mode in the EXE? Is the Steam GOTY edition completely Steamworks or not?

Fallout 3 doesn't have a Steamworks version at all. All versions of New Vegas are steamworks, though.

FO3 was basically forgotten and left to rot by bethesda. As a result the games a mess on modern hardware. It does not have steam works period.

You would need gfwl disabler, unoffical patch, maybe some kind of anticrash mod, anti stutter, and if all of that doesnt work you have to make some ini tweaks.

I think someone was working on a tool that fixes most of the shit without mods, but I forget the name of it.

Does anyone know if Fallout 3 works better in windows 10 than in windows 7?

Kind of a late reply, but I've been trying to get FO3 to work on Windows 10 for a few days now. Nothing I do works. It crashes every time with a "Fallout 3 has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution..." error after I hit play, not matter what solution I try.

I didn't even have to do anything to get the same game to work in Windows 7... it just worked for me.
