Dragon Quest 11 Announced! [PS4/3DS (simultaneous), NX (tentative)]

Already announcing NX support? Makes me wonder how far into development it is for them to be so bold to announce it. They steered clear from Nintendo home consoles for a while, this is interesting.
I wonder if this is something Iwata worked out before his passing.

It would be pretty sweet if they allowed you to play exclusively 3d or 2d sprite modes. Playing a top down 2d MMO seems sort of cool...

I know we wont get it but I kinda want a stupid in-game story reason for why we can see the world in both dimensions

whatever tho, no random battlessss

CELL was the problem. I feel like I'm repeating myself but it set back console development in Japan many years. It's only just recently that SCE created an easy to use, developer friendly ecosystem where large and small developers can put out all their content on multiple devices. Square-Enix had major White Engine/Crystal Tools issues on PS3 and couldn't even get UE3 up and running due to lack of native Japanese documentation.

Since then Epic Games set up a Japanese division to assist developers using UE, so what you're seeing now is companies like Square-Enix and Capcom using UE4 on developer friendly hardware and judging by the progress made with KH3, it's going to mean Japanese devs get up and running much more easily than they were able to on PS3.

DQXI looked very early judging by the footage shown but it's looking like a gorgeous game which I'm very much looking forward to experiencing. Hope to see more RPGs like this in the future too.

I don't think KH3 skipping an entire generation was Cell's fault. FFXIV 1.0 wasn't Cell's fault either. Making 3 (or more, I can't remember) console games exclusive to an American console was a stupid decision too. And from what I remember FFXIII had creative problems (lack of clear direction) even well into development. PS4 might be helping, but I think Wada did a lot of damage to SE.

Oh, man, that dual screen mechanic on the 3DS version has me grinning like an idiot.

But now there is another DQ Game I get to worry if it will come to the West or not. Greaaaaat!

Speaking of which, was there any news regarding DQ 7 and 8 heading West like I have heard in some rumors?

There was something about DQ8 in Europe I caught when I was skimming though the stream replay on YouTube. What was that all about? Had some Cosplay too!

This is clearly an exciting indicator that perhaps NX will finally have a decent 3rd Party ecosystem so developers can easily create and port their games to the console. Interesting times ahead for Nintendo and I hope it becomes big success because I'm sure Mr. Iwata worked extremely hard and literally until his last moment so this next console can become a success.

DQ7 goat hero design

I actually have a soft spot for this design. So unassuming.

I think DQ11's protagonist is the first to have purple, black, and green in his color scheme since DQ5.

The JRPG quantity was there last gen too. It was just that most of them ended up disappointing quality wise. We will see how the current lineup ends up.

I still want SE to make some interesting looking new IP JRPGs before saying "they are back". This is something where they are still lacking.

I'm just reading the news. I said W O W!! NX version as well!? A game officially kinda announced for an unnanounced console where the only thing that has been confirmed right now is it's codename. Has this ever happened before? The best thing is that this is a (big) 3rd Party game for a Nintendo console. Could this mean Nintendo will finally create a 3rd party friendly console so it can be easy to port and develop there? Ohhhh hope this is a good indicator of that!

Well, yes. Kinda. I can't remember specific games, but during the late days of the PS2/Xbox era (and even some at the start of this current generation) many games would market themselves "for next-gen consoles". They couldn't outright say "For Xbox One/PS4" before the consoles were officially announced/unveiled, even though it was a known fact that they were in production.

Actually, a lot of this was Cell's fault. KH3 skipped an entire generation because Nomura chose to make portable games for KH to fill the gap until they had the resources to make KH3. It was easier to find partners for development on portables than it was on PS3, especially in the first half of the entire generation.

FFXIV 1.0 was also a huge clusterfuck because the development team while experienced with PS2 level hardware from FFXI had difficulty scaling up, like many Japanese developers. They struggled to make the game work on PC, and couldn't make it run on PS3 at all.

FFXIII's also had as much technical struggles as it did creative struggles. Another casualty of the early PS3 generation which stonewalled a ton of valuable resources in a big Japanese developer.

I find it odd though, that while you can also attribute a lot of these issues to the teams responsible, you choose to specifically blame Wada for it. If these are creative and technical problems, it seems odd to put it all on the CEO, who is responsible for business decisions.

I wonder if this is something Iwata worked out before his passing.

I'd say that's a given

Wait, did Verendus leak all three platforms prior to the announcement or just the PS4 version of XI?

He kinda did. Said there was a playstation hd dq game but that Nintendo (or "another party", don't remember) is in talks to get the game as well. This long after saying it won't be exclusive, iirc. I think what he was implying was that there were negotiations in regards to the ue4 sku though someone can dig through his post history to find that stuff. I'm on mobile

I hope they bring both versions to the west, they're the same game but yet so different (in a good way).

Square is back!

I don't think you have to worry much about localization. Hell, the HD version is likely being made with the west in mind, since the ps4 isn't exactly lighting up Japan

So adding the up on the list Square-Enix has the following titles coming go PS4:

Star Ocean 5
Dragon Quest XI
Final Fantasy XV
Dragon Quest X
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Dragon Quest Heroes
Dragon Quest Builders
World of Final Fantasy
Kingdom Hearts 3
Nier 2
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Dragon Quest Heroes 2
Final Fantasy 7 (PC Port)
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Project Setsuna
Hitman
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Final Fantasy XIV Updates (An unidentified amount of content will continue to make it's way to the game).

I got to say I'm very impressed with the output they have coming to the PS4 so far.

Not to mention they already released FFXIV, FFtype0 HD and DQH on the thing. At this point during the PS3 era SE had released 0 games and only announced FFXIII, SO4 (maybe?) and The Last Remnant (lol) for it. I wonder what made them go all in like this.

p.s. Verendus is awesome.

And FFXHD

I don't mind having Verendus drop the "insider stuff" he usually does as it spices things up in boring times and gives something for people to talk about. But wrong information is wrong information and even though I know things can change a lot in this industry he should be careful with what he teases, the fact that he jokes a lot or can be very sarcastic doesn't really help :p. He's still pretty legit in my book as he's teased stuff which I would deem impossible but like lots of "insiders" he's also wrong on several occasions.

I can see how one could mistake those two.
I think he's talking about CBOAT confusing that first Halo 5 trailer for Prince of Persia or something like that. Master Chief was wearing some old cloth while walking through the desert. I could be wrong though.

No, it really wasn't.

I don't do that just for Square Enix though, whenever something is going wrong in a company I usually think the CEO/President/Whatever is responsible. If you use an unproved director for your biggest franchise, his failure is also yours (IMO).

I don't know, I'm just seeing so many things change in SE I cannot believe Wada was not the main issue here.

I just walked into this and what are some people angry about exactly? Everyone wins right?

Oh...graphics of the PS4 being held back or something. Good thing DQ isn't about graphics but, oh well what did I expect.

Parasite Eve 3 already exists on the PSP.

Damn I wish I woke up earlier to read more of duckroll's snark.
