Upgrade to Windows 10?

I can't get Cortana to play specific songs or artists. It just brings up the web page with links to Youtube videos instead of playing the music on my pc. She will play it if I say shuffle music or play random music, but that just queues everything up.

I can't get her to do anything she just says her and the internet are not talking. weird.

Get Windows 10 app has appeared on my Win 8.1, can I anywhere see if the download of the ISO is started [or is stopped with some error]?

Can I simply upgrade via USB, or must I wait for this process to finish.

I'd love to install Win10 but all the ridiculous amounts of data harvesting is just not cool with me. The biggest worry I have is that data harvesting, when turned off, turns on automatically after a while. Stuff like keystrokes being sent to Microsoft is just mad.

Anyone found a way to permanently gut that stuff or am I gonna have to wait for 6 months for a block?

Do you use Google search or any Google service? Have a smart phone? They already got you.

You can turn a lot of that "botnet" stuff off anyway.

Search for it or right click on the desktop.
Doesn't appear. Seems like I will have to uninstal and install again?

Edit: Ok, seems like W10 downloaded just the drivers, nothing more. I had to uninstall, not allow W10 to update the drivers, then install from nvidia site.

I have read that the quiet hours feature is missing in this RTM version of Windows 10. apparently under settings--> notifications you can configure the times when you dont want to see notifications but i cant see this option. it was there in earlier builds which is odd. can anyone confirm this?

I thought I read a while back that the insider previews will be able to upgrade to the release version for free. Is this true? Mine still says its an insider preview, how do i upgrade it?

Check my post here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=173607660&postcount=6764

Worked for me in limited testing, but I make no guarantees

You already have the release version but if that is the path you're taking you need to stay on the preview builds to remain activated

The current preview build is the same as the RTM version

You do realize that they use that data to determine how much a function is used/not used. EX: The new task view button is to make snapping easier and "alt-tab view" more in the eye of users. They've been doing this for ages.

No.
You have to update first so your keys will convert to Win 10 then use the toolkit again to create a bootable OS before you can install fresh.
Ok, I'm pretty confused about this process. I just bought a Win 8.1 OEM key, how can i best go about turning this into a Win 10 key for future fresh installs?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I have to install Win 8.1 fresh, then upgrade to Win 10 (not fresh install) then somehow my key turns into a Win 10 key, which then I can use to do a fresh Win 10 install??

So confusing

Device encryption key is backed up to OneDrive
Windows 10 generates a unique advertising ID for each user on each device
Microsoft will collect information “from you and your devices, including for example ‘app use data for apps that run on Windows’ and ‘data about the networks you connect to.'
Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device.
Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.”

Microsoft account and the operating system immediately syncs settings and data to the company’s servers. That includes your browser history, favorites and the websites you currently have open as well as saved app, website and mobile hotspot passwords and Wi-Fi network names and passwords.

Yeah, thanks but I will skip Windows 10.

follow these steps.

1. Install win 8.1 and fully update
2. run the win 10 upgrade either by reserved download or media creation tool. This will convert your exsisting win 8.1 key into a generic win 10 key for the upgrade. At the same time a hardware ID for your setup will be generated and sent to microsoft. This is now your 'system key' but you dont see it. Your software key is still good for win 8.1.

3. Now finally clean install windows 10. At no point enter any key when/if it asks. There is a skip or do this later option presented, choose that. When the clean install is done, connect to the internet and you will automatically activate. This works fine for me and many others.

Pretty sure, it's upgrade or fresh install to 8.1 > upgrade 10 and should link key on your account / hardware > fresh install 10

Will I continue to receive all updates if i leave it this way?

Anyone else having a hard time getting the wireless Xbox 360 controller to work on win 10? I plug in the dongle and it doesn't seem to be recognized.

Did the upgrade first to make sure it all activated fine and then I did a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.

Both times worked flawlessly and everything is running well.

Really positive impressions thus far!

Oh crap.. Yet to try this though. Gonna be bummed out if the adapter does not work.

For people who have their Windows 10 upgrade notification icon that disappeared, it happened to me, I went into System and realized my Windows wasn't activated anymore and needed to do it again, after I did and restarted, the upgrade notification reappeared.

In case this can help.
Oh and using W7.

plugged in 360 wireless controller, installed automatically and works perfect. so chill :)

Fresh install worked, but can't fully activate with my W 8.1 OEM key...

No one ever said you could, as mentioned lots of times the upgrade system uses your MS account and pulls the license from there. If you didn't upgrade an activated and registered system before clean installing you're unfortunately out of luck and have to do that first.

I did this last night and it was really fast and pain free. Just had to reboot to get sound working from my video card and reinstall my Thrustmaster TX drivers. Other than that it's fantastic. I really like 10 holy shit.

Hey, everyone just came from Windows 10 subreddit and AMDs support forums, and it seems that there is a problem with the current drivers on Windows 10 for some users (seems to be dynamic graphics users mostly). The problem causes the machine to hang with a black screen for a minute after the bootup logo, again (sans black screen) right after the desktop loads up and during shutdown/restart.

I've tested by uninstalling AMD drivers with DDU. Reverting to the Intel integrated alone allows the machine to boot/shutdown/restart just fine without hangs.

Just wanted to put this out there for AMD users experiencing this problem, so you don't waste your time trying to reinstall the entire OS/drivers.
I had this problem and I heard it was a crossfire problem so my 290x cf setup might have been guilty but this was totally fixed for me after going to 15.7.1 driver

You are truly kings among men, I'll try this when I get home from work. This was better customer service than the Microsoft agent whom I asked the same exact question to. Thanks!

Please update if yours works. There isn't much online about it being busted.

Shit, this is very worrying. Hope I can cancel it when the install is ready

You can turn a lot of stuff off during the installation or from settings > privacy. Also turn both of the options HERE off.

It's hard to say how much or little stuff the PC will still collect, but this should bring you at least some peace of mind. I'm going to stay optimistic and believe that with everything turned off, 10 won't collect any more information than 8.1 would have.

Anyone else having cortana problems? the "hey cortana" is not working for me. I had it working for a few minutes but the few times it did work it was very inconsistent. She will respond to me one time and then go completely silent. She works PERFECTLY when I click the button on the task bar and click the mic button and talk to her. I wish she worked that good for me when I simply used "hey cortana".

I still am using a 2008-era first-gen i7 920 processor. Will an upgrade cause issues performance-wise? 9gb RAM, GTX 970 otherwise. Just haven't invested in a new mobo/CPU yet.

Everything was fine up until yesterday at about 7pm centeral US time. I was playing a game with no problem, then suddenly that game started to stutter when I moved the character, a bad stutter too. I thought it must have loaded a zone badly so I restarted the game and it was still the same. Then I tried other games like Crysis 2 which runs like nothing on my machine but it too stuttered badly when I turn the camera. Dragon Age Inquisition also but it's not as bad.

Games are unplayable now and I may try going back to windows 7. I shouldn't have upgraded but hopefully it'll end up going back to normal the way that it suddenly started.

No temperatures are out of normal.

Opened the case and nothing looked like it had a lot of dust on them or was moved/had something spilled on it.

Tried installing new drivers, installing old drivers (old Nvidia drivers don't seem to work on W10 at all).

I put everything to normal clocks, very low settings, still stutter.

Man I'm so happy right now.

I'm having some issues with the Realtek Audio Drivers, when I set the audio to 5.1 there's no sound from the rear speakers, I need to change it to 7.1 in order to make them work, I uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled, does anyone knows what do I need to do to fix this issue?

Thanks

Bootcamp here, and I'm having some big issues with my drivers (upgrading from Win 7).
I lost my trackpad rightclick and it doesn't detect my thunderbolt display monitor.

It seems all drivers for my laptop are generic, and my Bootcamp Control doesn't open.

So did I and had no troubles save for having to reboot the PC to get my video card drivers to be recognized. I started up the Xbox app and clicked on "Stream" and it worked right out the gate. The quality while streaming wasn't up to snuff as my network is pretty poor. However, I got a glimpse of the future and know that when I get myself a better router things should work flawlessly! Good stuff, and I wasn't even sure that I cared to bother with it on my dinosaur, 4 year old PC!
