Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

The YongYea video about the article talks about Mother Base development "becoming really important in later stages of the game due to special events that need to be dealt with". He also got stuck in certain missions because he hadn't unlocked the proper gear, due to underestimating how much the game expected him to be doing Mother Base stuff.

of course mother base is not optional, but they've also emphasized that you can be pretty hands-off about the whole process too. you capture soldiers/pows and you can just let the game decide where to put them and what to research. i don't think it's a very big deal tbh. as long as you bother to capture enough staff, you're fine.

I dont know guys I'm a fan of Metal Gear since Metal Gear Solid on PS1 and I have seen a lot of crazy things (and tech) in MGS and it all was a perfect match. It seemd crazy but I was able to accept it.

With MGS5 I just feel that everything is over the top. Everything Kojima does, he does it perfectly (even lil details) but when it comes to this I have my doubts. It just feels out of place, a lot of things. It just doesn't fit the time

Like I said before this Metal Gear doesn't feel like a MGS game, it has lost that feeling that MGS1, 2 and 3 had. It starts to remind me of Resident Evil where the series was completly changed and we got an Third Person Shoorter (5 and 6)

I still think this is Resident Evil 4 for the MGS universe but a lot of has changed and not for the best. Im hyped for it but nowhere near the level of hype like MGS 2,3 and 4 and that is sad because this is the last Metal Gear from mr. Kojima-San.

INB all the haters, this is my opinion

There really can't be a better praise than this.

That wasn't a build timer, it was an Outer Ops one. I could be wrong but all the build timers I've seen have only been between 18-35 minutes, which I imagine is about the length of one mission on the field.

Oh true, it wasn't a build timer. That's somewhat reassuring. Hopefully nothing reaches into that 1 hour + zone.

And really, at base, this timer nonsense is just that - nonsense. The entire rest of the game seems amazing except this one detail.

Sure is, but I'm hoping it'll be balanced well enough that I'll be too busy tranqing fools to notice.

it looks both fun and tedious. like i can see myself getting sick of the base management quickly and wanting to get on with the story. hopefully it doesn't feel like a grind.

Characters performing supernatural feats aren't like warping the fabric of reality, at least to me.

If a character turned Snake into a banana my reaction would be "What?". If someone froze and rewound time I would similarly think "What?". Teleportation via wormholes is sort of in that realm. It isn't humans doing something that humans don't usually do, but (for instance) electric eels or water striders might. Or spiritual weirdness. It's doing things that are physically impossible.

Teleportation is a pretty big McGuffin to have as just an aside.
Personally I always considered the endgame techs from peace walker to be effectively non-canon (IE the Stealth Gun). Same deal here.

Did you miss the first part or not play Peace Walker? It can be managed for you.

All you need to do if you want is capture new people + use your iDroid to create new bases + develop new weapons/gear once you've captured enough R&D / Intel / Mesh / Medic / etc levelled people.

This is all optional and allows you to do things like get best weapons and gear.

Wait....Children?

Wow that looked pretty damn fun/amazing. I've been intentionally keeping myself in the dark about this game but I ended up watching the whole video. I had no idea the base could be expanded so much. It's huge! I can't wait to raid my friends' base. :D

Off topic but the commentator (and game) saying each letter in FOB really annoyed me. It's pronounced as a word, just like most military acronyms.

Is that true? Damn that's cool. Maybe on my first playthrough I'll relax about this stuff and just see the story, then on my second I can go nuts.

Can I watch this video and not be spoiled on the story stuff?

So about the FOB stuff. Is it possible for a player to infiltrate and never be seen?

They say if you do, you won't ever be found out/retaliated against so: Possible. But is it gonna happen? That depends on base set-up/player ability and speed of mind-games. It's possible for people to get the objectives undetected in Spies vs Mercenaries for TC's Splinter Cell, but rarely happens.

Yes. It's just explaining FOB/Invasions and the Mother Base stuff. Unless you really care about OMG CHARACTERS (which have already been revealed and are known in the series canon already) and/or music, there isn't much there to spoil.

Also you REALLY don't want to let Miller manage if you want to get better gear.

Could you be more specific? You didn't actually identify anything

I stand corrected then. I thought the jeux video article was about him being pissed you couldnt unlock certain non lethal options. If you do have to use mother base to unlock certain necessary items to progress then I guess you can't finish the game without ever using it. I don't think it has to be big enough of a part of the game to warrant skipping the game due to it but that's just my opinion.

I can see why some might be turned off by it but from what I've seen this is still very much an MGS game and it looks like the "wackyness" can mostly be avoided and the game can be tackled as a straight up stealth/action game.

If anything the FOB missions remind me more of MGS1 and 2 than the SP portion of the game does.

Just clarifying what the other poster said about this stuff being optional. Some of it is, some of it isn't. I think if people gave some of this new stuff a chance they might find they actually quite enjoy it, but the fact remains that if all you're interested in is a traditional, MGS1-4 style of game and nothing else, this ain't it. You can't just not develop a Mother Base, y'know?

Oh true, it wasn't a build timer. That's somewhat reassuring. Hopefully nothing reaches into that 1 hour + zone.

Oh, dude, you should read up on what some of the unlock requirements in Peace Walker are, because a one-hour wait time is nothing compared to that game's bullshit. There's stuff in that game you can only get by grinding superbosses dozens of times to get the extremely rare item drops necessary to craft them. I think the Patriot (The Boss' gun) requires an R&D level of 99 and then takes fifty missions just to craft. The hoops that game expects you to jump through are insane. If they go full Peace Walker with MGSV I could easily see advanced weapons and items taking 24+ hours to craft.

Yeah, nothing really about the story except the first 2 characters introduced in the beginning of the game.
Ocelot and Miller

And yeah, what this will be about is really 2 things:

1) There will be difficult EXTRA OPS or SIDE OPS that won't be needed to beat the game (maybe a secret ending, who knows?) that will require better weapons to beat them, which will require you to manage mother base more.

2) Online gameplay. Build out your mother base, invade others mother bases, basically clash of clans.

But it's so easy. You go on a mission, you fulton some soldiers, you click iDroid when you go motherbase, select to develop new platforms, select to upgrade some gear. Repeat process. That takes like no time at all. It's menu based. Everything else shown is optional and will allow you to do those difficult extra ops / etc.

You guys really need to play Peace Walker. This is the exact same stuff in Peace Walker, minus the interactivity of the Mother Base (going to visit soldiers, etc) and the online element.

I'm sort of surprised that Kojima didn't use a Terminator entrance for invaders.

Probably because it just lets the defender line up to headshot/"backstab" the player a la D. Souls summon/entrance.

I really do. Its the only one I haven't.

I am really looking forward to building my mother base to be an enormous fortress of death FYI. I just thought the whole mother base thing was optional.

Yeah I remember, and i hated it. Terrible design choices.

I have the exact opposite feeling I had when RE4, 5 and 6 were announced and released. RE4 had me doubting but made me a beleiver once I played it, RE5 was less RE and more TPS than ever, it lacked RE spirit for me and 6 was just WTF!?

Progressively it felt less RE with each new release.

MGSV, on the other hand gives me a feeling of care, polish and attention to detail that it even overwhelms me, in a good way.. Even Ground Zeroes felt like traditional MGS with icing on the cake, that being the Open World as a playground in which to exercise all the crazy stealth and awesomeness Big Boss is capable of. But it still feels pure MGS to me. Just with bigger maps and more possibilities of course.

The only thing I feel is over the top with this game is the scale of it and thats awesome to me.

I understand your concern though, just rent it before buying if you are not sure you will like it.

Yup, and Kojima has said this exact thing. But Konami put their footdown on numbering a handheld title.

Which is funny considering the state of Konami's console game development now.

There's so much people are going to miss out by not playing PW. Sure Ground Zeroes provides a small write up and Phantom Pain will do the same kind of deal, as it'll need to explain not just the basics like Miller, Hal, Outer Heaven, CYPHER, Zero, etc but also the specifics like ZEKE.

You know, it's kind of amazing that MGSV is the same game it was when it was announced 3 years ago. Usually games get downgraded or things get taken out, but it seems like pretty much everything we've seen so far in trailers will be in the actual game. If anything, it looks better and better the more we see of it. Of course, the game hasn't come out yet, so that claim hasn't been proven, but the MGSV looks like it provides everything Kojima promised, and then some.

I hate to do it but since I won't play it before TPP releases. I'm going to watch it on YouTube. I felt lost enough playing GZ. I can't justify buying the collection just for PW right now. I need to get caught up.

The management and customization of the Diamond Dogs and Mother Base HQ looks great.

Forward Operating Bases are an awesome addition. I like the management stuff: real-time construction, activity logs of every small or minor action or event, the general expansion and player raid element, etc.

Why not? MGS HD collection is cheap on PS3.

Ehhhh. I'll think about it. The collection is $40 here in Canada and that seems pretty steep just for PW right now. Is it that good?

I'm also poor right now

I wouldn't bother with MGSV so close. Peace Walker's worth playing (I don't really like it at all, but enough people do that it's worth trying for yourself), but MGSV's going to do everything it did but better. Best to just watch an LP (or just the cutscenes) to get caught up with the story so you're all ready to go.

God, this is almost like classic Deus Ex-lite in terms of freeform sandbox mechanics and delivery. And it's in multiplayer of all things! Going to invade at a stormy night in pure stealth, Jesus please help me!

**Also, wormhole fultons???????

As much as I want to replay the previous games..I think if I start now I'll end up going through all of them and being too burnt out on the series to get the most out of 5. Played them all as they came out and had a MGS marathon 2-3 years ago, so looks like I'll be going through the youtube MGS movies too.

So if New Order and Joy Division are in this...what are the chances The Smiths are in it too? I can kind of see Kojima being a morrissey fan

Man... this game looks really huge. I didn't play any Metal Gear Solid game other than the first (shame on me) but I have V preordered. What are the chances that I will be completely lost when it comes to the story?

Just watch a Let's Play or one of the "Movie versions" on YouTube that compiles all the story stuff. I'm doing the same as I don't have a PS3 and I don't think I'm not too keen on playing the PSP version on the Vita.

Hahahaha.

Some of the stuff to unlock in Peace Walker is basically the equivalent of grinding for 10 hours.

I expect all of the most game breaking equipments to be absurdly difficult and long in their build time.

The chances are pretty damn good.

If you have a spare 23 hours you can watch the movies ;p Judging from a few spoilers from 5 you might want to watch the non big boss ones too or some things may go over your head.

I advise people not to play Peace Walker because it sucks ass and instead to read a recap and enjoy MGSV which seems like a much more realised vision of Peace Walker's ideas.

Disagree with your advise.

Give PW a chance. Let people form their own opinion.

If they don't like it, watch a story playthrough of PW.
