LTTP: Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Spoilers inside)

danganronpa-trigger-happy-havoc.jpg

So when I bought myself a Vita a while back, one of the games that was on my radar was the Dangan Ronpa franchise. I didn't plan on getting it until later on but I decided to get it after finishing Persona 4 Golden.

Needless to say, I didn't look back. The game was a fun ride. While I was spoiled by some stuff before I even got a Vita,
notably case 1 and who the mastermind was (sort of),
the circumstances thereof as well the greater mystery behind Hope's Peak Academy and what occurred in cases after the first were left a mystery to me.

Character wise, The students are pretty well-rounded. The free time events really help give most of the students more depth and complexity beyond their ultimate title. Individually, there were quite a few characters I grew to really like. Kyoko, Kiyotaka, and Sakura I'd say are my top 3 favourite characters personally. Monokuma also makes for a good villain. A utter asshole yet he's such an enjoyable character to watch.
And then there's the mastermind. I won't go into detail but suffice to say, she isn't forgettable.

On the other hand there were characters I didn't really care for even after seeing their free time events like Sayaka or Toko. The former for
repaying your kindness with her trying to frame you for murder and the latter for being largely useless in investigations and trials. Even when she's genocide Jack I didn't find her to be endearing. It figures she survives to the end while Taka and Sakura don't.

Gameplay is pretty damn good, simply put. The investigations are similar to that of Ace Attorney but it's during the trial's where it really shines. Nonstop Debates, Epiphany Anagram, Machinegun Talk Battle, and Climax Logic all provide unique and different situations that make it stand out from it's contemporaries. My favourite case would be the final case (those who have played it will know why) while my least would be case 3
Taka is unceremoniously killed while it's easy to determine that Celeste is the killer.

Free-time however is a mixed bag. While yes they do give most of the students more depth and complexity, giving presents are a crapshoot if you don't have a guide and there isn't enough Free time in the game proper to complete more then 4 characters in my play through. Thank god for school mode allowing more free time.

The music is amazing. Standouts for me include the MTB themes, Box 16, and Mr Monakuma's tutoring.

And of course there's the executions. They are over the top, memorable and often ironic. Nothing more to it.

So I quite enjoyed Dangan Ronpa overall. The first and second games are on sale on PSN this week so if you haven't already give them a shot. The second game is already on my Vita ready to go.

Great games, and while I found
Celeste's murder to be obvious I think the motive behind it was the truly interesting point of the case. The Ultimates are always praised as the greatest in their fields, geniuses among geniuses, but this really showed how far they'd go in pursuit of their craft. It wasn't even a necessary action, it was more like a compulsion for Celeste. Can't fault her for that, though it was a really shitty thing to do.

Sakura and Aoi were the best characters, muscle head friendship was beautiful.

Danganronpa 1 and 2 are fantastic roller coasters, but I don't spend any effort on the free time stuff. Those bits are boring.

Glad you liked the game! Now start playing the second game to get ready for Another Episode. Also New World Order and Hope vs. Despair are GOAT tier tracks.

Mr. Monokuma's lesson is awesome. Want that as my ringtone.

Anyway I just finished this recently too and bought the second game while it was on sale. I liked it a lot, the characters were good and the trial bits were really fun, I'm really interested in the anime.

You picked a good time to pick it up! Some time left before the release of Despair Girls to play DR2 :)

I too am sad
Taka and Sakura didn't make it :(

Love this game and series in general glad you really enjoyed it I platinumed both games I love them so much and BTW get ready because 2 is even better.

Glad you liked it, OP. DR2 is almost necessary if you want any closure at all after the ridiculous cliffhanger at the end of DR1.

Kyoko is my favourite character. She's a lot like Naoto from P4G (the detective prince!) in that she's super smart at solving cases yet also a bit socially inhibited due to her background.

Sigh...

Yessss another Box 16 fan, that track is godly.

It sure is.

I love your outlook on this game OP compared to the last LTTP I read. I have to say though I'm confused as to why Free time gives some so much trouble. You just give the characters what matches their hobbies and interests. For instance : Aoi gets food, Sakura gets fighting stuff, etc.

Also did you play the mode where you build things for monokuma? Because that mode is so addicting.

I'm replaying it right now before Ultra Despair Girls comes out and can't say I really enjoy it as much as I did the first time through. This is also the first time playing it with English voices and can't say I'm a big fan of most of them. Goodbye Despair had way better V.A.

I really liked the premise and presentation of the series, but I strongly disliked the murder mysteries in it(the sequel fixed those). I especially disliked Case 4 in that regard.

Byakuya, you couldn't solve this mystery because you focused only on the evidence and ignored the human aspect of the case!

Wait no, actually you ignored physical evidence that proved that you got the wrong killer. So really the whole lesson you learn here about being less of an asshole, while appreciated, doesn't really follow from what happened back there. You should have learned not to ignore evidence.

It always bugs me when mystery fiction tries to go on super hard about how the human aspect of a case is more important than evidence, then despite what every character says if you think about it their explanation for what really happened still relies 100% on evidence and they could have arrived at it without any sort of human element. That kind of stuff really bugs me, like what they tried to do and what they ended up doing was complexly different. Like they knew what the theme they were going for was, but they didn't double-down on it enough to justify what the characters say and the lesson it tries to preach.

Love the game too though, and the sequel is a lot better at the whole murder mystery aspect of it, so there's that to look forward to about the sequel!

I don't get this game's love in GAF. I thought it was utterly mediocre.

Digg the series, but i think 2 went too far in the wrong direction and some ofnthe minigames get somehow worse.

I beat this game only a week ago and it was really cool. My biggest complaints about it are the far too linear murder mysteries. Sometimes you cant even pick up evidence thats right before your eyes because the game wants you to pick up something else first. Super annoying. And the ending was a bit off
With all that apocalypse and hope despair hope despair hope DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR stuff.

I still really enjoyed the story and the characters most of the time tho.

Im also still mad about Sakura, Chihiro and Taka, :(

Starting Dangan 2 later this day.

LOVE this game and the sequel, they make the Vita worth owning. I'd probably give 2 the edge, but 1 has my favorite character in the series: Kyoko.

Plus, how can you not LOVE the psychotic Monokuma???! Like I know we're supposed to hate him, but I just enjoy every second he's on screen. Zero III from VLR and Monokuma <3 <3 <3

For people who has played this game, at what difficulty did you guys play the game?
Would the puzzles be different, or will they just give more hints at lower difficulty?

The game is super easy either way, you could play it on the highest difficulties and not have any trouble at all. There's separate settings for questions and minigames, they don't really change anything, they just give you fewer options and obstacles.

Wow, those statues are really nice! So close to buying the Junko statue. Soo close. Sssstop.

I'm loving what I've played of Danganronpa 2. It has by far even goofier characters. Though I've been sitting at the halfway point for months. I need to get on that before Despair Girls shows up or I end up getting spoiled.

Hmm my favorite character from the first game had to be Byakuya with Hiro coming in close second place since he was hilarious even though he was useless. I ended up enjoying the second game more, even though the setting wasn't as good as the original in my opinion the second game has a better cast of characters. Case 4 was the worst case since it was pretty obvious what happened and it ended making Byakuya look like an idiot even though anyone should have been able to tell what happened. <_<

My least favorite characters were Aoi, Sayaka, and Hifumi. They were either useless and/or they tried to screw you over.

if you do trophies, play on mean, then go back and play on kind.

this man speaks the truth.

I think Danganronpa 1 is the better of the two, just because of how the story on 2, especially the ending, doesn't really flow as well.

This thread just gave me major hype for this series. I need to look more into it. Which versions or whatever should I get?

Box 15 <3

First game is better as a whole imo. Second is all over the place, it is a bigger rollercoaster tho.

Would love it if they do Danganronpa Zero for 3.

Fantastic game, second one is also brilliant. I felt the atmosphere spot on for the first but differs a bit in the second. I felt the story of the second was slightly better.

So DR2 is supposed to get a good deal crazier than 1, right? I enjoyed the first, but it felt like the kind of story that had one more gear to shift up to but never quite hit it, and the ending was frustrating as all hell. (It probably doesn't help that I played it soon after discovering Zero Escape.) I've had 2 sitting on my shelf since the day it released and I've yet to dive in. Maybe I should burn through it before Metal Gear consumes my everything...

Edit: I got the platinum in 1 and I can't imagine doing the same in 2. School mode was such a punishingly boring grind after the first time through.

Start by not clicking on threads that say they have spoilers inside. :p
Tagged or not, spoilers for this series are very easy to come by and they really hurt the experience.
Just play the games in release order. DR - DR2 - DR: Another Episode

Yo here is a completely spoiler free glimpse of what you are in for with DR2 if you needed some incentive to start. Marked as spoiler because you really should meet these characters by yourself.

Playing through Chapter 6 right now and during the class trial,
they already determined the Mukuro is dead, "died" twice, has similar fatal wounds as Junko, why the fuck are they disputing the fact Junko is the mastermind? You would thing Byakuya, with all of his smarts could've seen it.

:_( I liked her. I was sad when she died. Hiyoko on the other hand, couldn't give two shits about.

Second favorite Character of the whole cast. She's just amazing.

Masafumi Takada's best work since No More Heroes, probably the best thing about these games(no easy feat).

The first game is better, but the second is worth it for the plot twist(s).

Watch your tongue, peasant.

I'm still annoyed that
Kiyotaka Ishimaru got the worst, most unnotable death in the damn game, and then Hagakure makes it out alive instead. The least they could have did was play up the Ishida persona more.

I want that figure... How much is it?

This thread just gave me major hype for this series. I need to look more into it. Which versions or whatever should I get?

Glad I could help convince you to buy it. All the games are for the vita in english and the first two games were on sale last week so I hope you did buy them.

Anyway I'm currently on Case 2 in Dangan Ronpa 2. So far so great right now, even if i'm not a fan of the revamped epiphany anagram or replacement for MTB. Currently around 2/3's of the way through the trial and at this point I'm thinking only one of two people who could have done it.
Either Peko killed her (I hope not, she's currently my favourite character so far) Or it's Sonia (considering she's the only one who knows what the mask exactly is, among other things)

Edit: Damn it all,
It is Peko...

The first game is better, but the second is worth it for the plot twist(s).

Yeah, the soundtrack is really something and fits in so well with the games' stylish presentations. The only strike I can mount against it is that some tracks are overused and/or placed poorly. Beautiful Dead is my go-to example - It's used everywhere. The second game doesn't really have this problem. Tons of new tracks and lots of returning tracks, and the music selection is generally more appropriate and less repetitive.
