New Final Fantasy XV screenshots

This would increase my hype if true. Open world is terrible.

It's confirmed not open world. There is a linear progression based on the story, they're not going to drop us right into a middle of nowhere and we can go anywhere and do whatever we want. In that sense, it'll likely be like Xenoblade Chronicles where the story takes us from one region to one another, each being massive in size, thus allowing for some player exploration and side tracking.

That Cuba designed on... It just adds so much character to the world, it seems so real!

Are you f---ken kidding me? -sigh-
Is that hard to ask for a very sandboxy Final Fantasy that's like Skyrim/Witcher 3 in terms of open world, quest system, and story progression.

Shit, even a short montage of clips from these places would have been great to release alongside the Dawn trailer.

Looks good, though. Oddly enough, the first screenshot is the most intriguing one to me.

It's still open world like RDR. You can go anywhere, explore, and do whatever you want just as long as it's not story related.

“In my plan book for Final Fantasy XV, I wrote it down as an ‘open-world-style Final Fantasy,” shares Tabata. “The world seamlessly expands, but unlike your common open-world RPGs, it’s not a game that lets you go anywhere and advance through the story like that.”

...Tabata adds that while the game will allow you to explore, “once you arrive at an area of interest and start advancing through the story, in a sense, it’s closer to Red Dead Redemption.”

So you actually get to drive the car? I wonder how the driving feels. Hopefully more GTA V and less Watch_Dawgz

You could drive in the past, but I don't know if they confirmed after all the changes
At least in all the videos and screenshots Noctis is never driving the car

I was referring to this line.

Sure you could go anywhere within that region, like how Shulk could go anywhere within Colony 9 or Gaur Plains when player reaches these places, but Shulk can't go from Colony 9 to say Eryth Sea straight away without progressing the linear story from the very beginning.

In the demo you had the option "Take the wheel", that was disabled however. Maybe it's still under development.

Tabata compared it to Red Dead Redemption, so I'm inclined to believe it'll be more like that than Xenoblade.

Lol, are you serious?

That sounds like the worst thing ever to me. The last thing Final Fantasy needs to be like is Skyrim.

Skyrim

Yeah, auto-scaling enemies, clunky stick-swinging combat and a final boss that's essentially a mob with slightly more HP after a cutscene where old (dead) people literally yell at clouds is what I look for in JRPGs.

FF8 was the first Final Fantasy where they really went for the realistic look and setting. I mean, before the madness that was Disc 2, you had everything from school, exams, a Greek-architecture port town, cars, trains, radio towers, TV stations, a salary (lol), social networking (lolol).

Not surprising that "A fantasy based on reality" gives very similar vibes.

I've never played Red Dead Redemption, so I'm not sure how it was like. Is it not like GTAV but in a wild west setting?

Yes and no. I mean, the overall structure of the game is similar, but in the end GTA is 90% city-based, while RDR has a much more open, frontier feel to it. In that sense it does feel like a very different game. It's hard to describe without playing it, really.

Time for SE to sue Facebook

The hotel picture gave me a strong FF8 vibe... <3

Same. More specifically Timber or Balamb. This is a very good thing.

Don't forget the multitude of fetch quests that send you off to roam about in one of the reused environments you've already seen over and over before, with the only difference being how the rooms and corridors are positioned. Yup, that's what I want to see in my FF.

Right, as it should be for FF I think. Character/story/world progression move together.

Also, unsurprisingly, these shots are great. I want to go wade in that river!

These aren't bullshots, right?

What's your definition? Is this achievable in Luminous Engine? Probably. Will the final game have this IQ on current console hardware? Who knows at this point.

Last thing they've said about reso/framerate/IQ/AA/etc. was that a lot of things were still not optimized, if you want to use Duscae 2.0 as a benchmark (which looks far inferior to those shots especially in the AA dept)

Reminder that the Dawn trailer was also mentioned to be all in-game in the ATR.

You have an open world to explore but you also have set a destination for story progression. Once you initialize that story mission it sets you off on a specific path to reach some place, sometimes with a time limit so you don't go wandering off. It's basically also like Witcher 3 from all this info.

Here's more on XV.

Tabata: My FFXV proposal was to write an open world style Final Fantasy. The word “style” is an important point. The world is spread out seamlessly, but it is unlike a typical open world RPG, it’s not the kind of game where no matter where you go, you progress. As this is a FF series title, you’ll be able to do things like level up your character and collect items while stepping into various regions in line with the story. The story has a flow where you’ll experience drama along the way and then finally reach a climax.

— So if you wanted to, could you walk to the next destination?

Tabata: Of course. But the world is extremely vast, so no matter how much time it takes walking, you won’t reach your destination. (Laughs) Because of that, the cars are driven on roads, and you walk in the places the car can’t go.

— After seeing that trailer and demo, we can’t wait 5 or 10 years. (Laughs) As for the game, is it fair to call FFXV an open world RPG?

Tabata: Assuming that means the world is seamlessly connected, then yes. The story is drawn on getting in a car and driving on an adventure.

The lighting part can be used in other things. See: FF14.
Was that added just recently with the new DX11 client in Heavensward? It's funny you mention it, because the lighting in regular XIV:ARR was actually one of my biggest gripes about that game, visually.

Really? I have some really amazing shots.
But remember Luminous lighting was also set for the original Versus engine as well.
