Japanese PlayStation blog goes through all of the Kojima directed games.

We are so going
to come full circle with a recreation of Outer Heaven and Solid Snake killing Big Boss.

Big Boss eventually transitions into the type of guy who would
turn on Solid Snake in MG1
, but then not really based on the epilogue of MGS4.

In terms of his character or plot of the overall world, there isn't any wiggle room for twists or unanswered questions unless Kojima retcons everything into taking place on the Boktai world.

Spoilers for a 28 year old game.

Same series-concluding schtick as around the release of MGS4.

Actually it felt more final back then, which is saying something because this time Kojima got the boot. I really thought it was the end of an era back then, but now I feel like it just goes on forever...

i know portable ops is not directed by Kojima by the story is penned by him and should be absolutely be in 'canon'. In fact, i would say the story of Portable ops is better and more important than Peace Walker. However, now that MGSV stars Paz, Chico, Kaz Miller and also motherbase...it would seems that The Phantom Pain is a 'remake' of Peace Walker with a bigger scope...just like MGS1 is 'literally' a remake of MG2.

"Finally the conclusion will be told"

"28 years of waiting will be rewarded"

Somehow I doubt it.

i thought it's already concluded in MGS4. MGS5 took place in the past. The only 'new' thing we will see is for Big Boss to finally establish Outer Heaven, Foxhound and maybe recruit a young solid snake into Foxhound.

Other than that, what new 'things' in terms of story can we expect?

Hype about BB decent to evil and what makes him and Kaz part ways.

Oh boy.. Canon wars.

Right.

If they don't go all the way and explain why Big Boss
loves the idea of child soldiers
Kojima is a confirmed hack.

We already know why.

He'd start conflicts, sweep up the orphans left in the wake of destruction, and because they were young, he could condition them to be loyal to him for life.

Pretty much like warlords in Africa do now.

Well, we know why. But why?

But he's an okay guy, because one becomes zero becomes a bloated economy of memes and he flushed Zero's catatonic wheelchair toilet and then politely died in a cemetery so they didn't even have to bother transporting his body.

Hype is through the roof, but in the grand scheme of story, Kojima perpetually paints himself into a corner by filling in his completed timelines.

This is a gaming event. 28 years... No other series can claim this.

True, there are other longer running franchises, but none have maintained the same constant storyline for so long without rebooting.

Probably for the better.

Look at Resident Evil and how quickly that all turned to shit.

It's their own fault, should've let us take down Umbrella ourselves rather than having the company be liquidated between 4 & 5 only to soft-reboot with a new 'Neo-Umbrella' ugh.

I don't really know why they're hyping this up as "the conclusion". MGS2 was the conclusion. MGS3 was the prequel, and MGS4 was an alternate conclusion for people who didn't understand that MGS2 was the conclusion.

MGSV isn't going to conclude anything. It's going to be a character story about a very important character, but the largest plot threads have all been wrapped up for years.

Except concluding Metal Gear Solid once and for all and Big Boss's fall to the dark side.

MGS3 gave big boss all the motivation he needed to fall to the dark side. Like MGS4 did for the modern day solid snake plotline, all the big boss games do is painstakingly spell out something that was already competently explained.

And take on child soldiers? Kill civilians? Plunge the world into total war?

Nah.

MGS3 just gave Big Boss motivation to go rogue and start his own mercenary unit.
MGS3 showed why Big Boss would idolize combat and why he would place value in his existence as a soldier. It showed why he would fanatically sacrifice everything to create a world of combat, free of other restrictions or politics.

He became the man that would create outer heaven when he passed on that handshake and saluted in that graveyard. The additional Big Boss games show the how, but we've known the why since 2004.

Bittersweet.

Can't believe were getting the last MG from Kojima in a couple weeks.

Still bitter about the lack of Hayter though.

Admittedly, it could've left us there to fill in the blanks as to how that all happens going forward.

But I've enjoyed seeing the creation and development of Outer Heaven, and I'm looking forward to seeing some key moments in the series actually take place.

Plus, y'know, the game looks bonkers awesome.

The only really unanswered question is why/how BIG BOSS AKA PUNISHED "VENOM" SNAKE rejoins the USA military as advisor to SOLID SNAKE at Foxhound while his side chick Outer Heaven thrives. And I mean, you could easily deduce how this pays out from the end of MGS3, which is all the series needed, but along came MGS4 and Peace Walker which fucked around with the whole Zero/Big Boss split, the Boss's will, and (for the time being) Big Boss essentially hounded by Zero from the USA with zero interest in returning.

Well, The Boss's AI is in this. I am a believer that this will be a huge part in the game.
