Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Too soon, they still are working on GTA 5 Story DLC.

Maybe next year.
Besides I'm still hoping they will port/remake RDR on XBO/PS4/PC, I can dream.

are they going to make story dlc? It's disappointing all they've done is put out stuff for their microtransaction online modes I never play.

if they do I honestly hope they just start over and do it virtual machine style like the 360 stuff instead of the bespoke per-game emulator that turned out to not scale very well.

that way you could show rich data and have all the screencap/vid functionality as well

If the xbox one has a faster hdd then the 360 stock one hopefully it fixes the sound popping, but what would annoy me the most is the most recent update broke cockpit real time shadows and we can't delete an update to fix it.
I don't think it was due to the HDD speed. At least, it being too slow. Wasn't it due to it being too fast? Anyway, I agree it would be great and it would actually sell me on picking up a One. That, and if Blur made it.

Probably not a big deal to most, and might not be something that would actually happen, but man it'd be sick if it did.

I really think the goal is to have everything under the Xbox platform to be playable in future iterations of that platform. For instance, Spencer has been adamant that he believes that you should never be unable to play your digital games which implies that he wants every version of the Xbox to be able to play those games from the previous generation. I would assume from now on that, so long as he is Head of Xbox, that future Xbox systems will feature backwards compatibility with all previous generations of the hardware. It's certainly an exciting direction, and if the Xbox One is eventually even able to play original Xbox games then that will certainly raise interest for many. It would be even more incredible if the entire original Xbox library (of what is playable assuming publisher approval would have to be made for it as well) was free to everyone digitally. This is really one way Microsoft can differentiate itself from the competition. It's also something I never expected out of them, but I am incredibly happy that it's happening.

Several original Xbox games were released as digital Xbox Originals on 360. Black and Ninja Gaiden Black being the only 2 I own. So I'd hope we'd at least get titles from that range running on Xbox One. Or course, it would be great if they would also support a range of discs in the same way they do for 360 games.

I use backwards compatibility all the time and play old games on original hardware when I can. Convenient and high quality backwards compatibility is a very important feature to me, so I hope Microsoft continues in this direction.

I think he's said before that he likes how all your PC games carry on with you through hardware or OS changes and even have benefits when upgrading and that's what he'd like consoles to become like, which was really interesting as it may hint at X1 games (exclusives, at least) seeing benefits on future generations of consoles.

I would hope the classic original Xbox games would be included (Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Splinter Cell, etc.) but I just hope that they run really well. I think the 360 backwards compatibility will be a test to see how well things will come later. Assuming Microsoft handles this backwards compatibility solution with the 360 really well, then I would safely assume that the original Xbox games will eventually be backwards compatible too. Backwards compatibility was never backwards like the previous head of Xbox tried to say; rather, it's more of an investment because people are going to want to know that the games they play now will not become obsolete when the next set of hardware becomes available.

This is a very intriguing idea because it would not only be really cool, but it would also greatly help sell the next iteration of hardware. For instance, and I should note that I realize this very likely won't happen at all, but what if the Xbox One is eventually able to play original Xbox games through an emulator similar to what it is doing with the 360 but now those original Xbox games have achievements added to them retroactively? That would be a pretty cool thing to see (unlikely though because developers would likely have to have input there).

Still, the idea of improving games beyond the original hardware through BC is something that will help push a lot of systems. Beyond that though, it would make consumers very happy. I would be one of them.

They would probably have to be patched but they could still add some achievements (Play on X day, play X hours and maybe even complete X level by reading the save file rather than have the game pop it?)

Another thing I'm thinking, could this be part of the reason why MS is pushing the dynamic resolution thing? With the xbox two the game might be 4k resolution but on xbox one it's only 900pish thanks to the dynamic scaler with the framerate being locked at 30 or 60? Not sure if that's possible but if anyone could do it, it'd be MS. Of course I don't think we'll ever get true enhancements like PC does since we don't have graphical options and probably never will.

So I have a quick question: I'm not sure how the remote play Xbone games on PC worked, but does this mean you could effectively play 360 games on PC if you have Windows 10?

Thinking of picking Red Dead Redemption up, in the hope it comes to BC soon.

Can't believe I've never picked it up or played it

What is the best version to buy? I'm thinking the Undead collection? Does this have everything on the disc, as I will be buying it pre-owned.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Well the game and collection of dlc are on sale this week.

I dont know if this has been asked before a quick search I didn't see anything but have you always been able to buy original Xbox games digitally on the 360 store? I was looking through the 360 store the other day and noticed a few original Xbox games on sale. Has this been there for awhile and I never noticed it before but do now because of the X1 bc or is this new?

Those were put up relatively early in the 360's lifetime. I don't remember exactly when, but I do know Halo CE was my first XBL purchase back in late 2008.

It was on the 360. They only had a few titles and seemed to give up on selling them digitally.

I wonder what performance is like for running a 360-compatible original Xbox game (e.g. James Bond 007: Nightfire) on the XB1's emulated 360. It might not even be necessary to make an original Xbox emulator.

If they do add support for original Xbox games, I hope they write a new emulator rather than re-use the 360 one. The games didn't run very well on the 360 as it is, I imagine adding an extra layer of emulation on top is going to make them even worse.

I don't think it would run noticeably worse than on 360, but given the X1's much more powerful hardware that's also much more similar in architecture, they could probably have a much, much better solution if they so desired.

If they do get original Xbox games running though, it would be super nice if they packaged every game with its last TU and all released DLC. Ya know, since the original XBL content servers are down.

If they do it ..

.. I hope they emulate the whole system als they are doing it with Xbox 360.

OG Xbox titles were emulated on a game by game basis and this of course runs better but introduces many new problems.

When they emulate the whole CPU / GPU and system, every game would run exactly as it did back then.

Given OG Xbox support was on a case by case basis, you'd imagine it would ultimately be easier for me MS to just circumvent the whole lot with an entirely new emulator.

I hope OG Xbox bc comes
and that Grabbed by Ghoulies is the first example of it (1080/60fps emu support please!)

Speaking for OG Xbox backwards compatibility, what if they used azure to prop back up the original xbox live service. I would love to play some pgr2 online again.

I think it will be great to have OG Xbox BC. Keep all of your games as the PC. More and more the Xbox becomes more and more like a PC and that's not a bad thing. It's great for the ecosystem and definitely a selling point for Xbox.

OG xbox emulation should be easy. The xbox one and og xbox share a similar architecture which is the x86. Xbox 360 emulation is the tougher nut to cracked as its using power pc and not x86. I did own a few xbox originals like Halo CE (which i dont need because of MCC). I believe also was Ninja Gaiden Black which was amazing.

Well the game and collection of dlc are on sale this week.

Decided to pick it up, last time I tried to use MS $10 card and it would only let me use a credit card so I didn't want to. This time I said screw it and used CC.

Is it normal for RDR to go on sale for cheap like this so often? Seems like it was just 3 maybe 4 weeks ago that it was sub $10.

I dont see the big deal over original xbox bc unless they gave me all my games digitally for free.

If they do add it I will have to buy some of the rarer games quick in case they go up in price
