Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

A week early embargo generally implies a level of confidence from the publisher that the game is going to review very well.

I wonder if this is also to compensate for the lack of a big advertising campaign. If MGSV gets a lot of good reviews that might be enough to increase launch sales.

Do we know if reflex mode is turned off, do we still have time to respond if someone sees us (before they radio in)? Or is it just like GZ?

Hopefully someone from the review event can answer this. I'm not going to get my hopes up, because it's always seemed like KojiPro considers Reflex Mode the 'proper' way to play, but if they got rid of the instant, omniscient Alert from GZ when you turned it off it'd fix one of my big complaints about the game.

Honestly, they had it perfect fourteen years ago in MGS2; I don't know why they ever changed it. You get spotted, the enemy retreats and calls for backup on his radio. If you can't take him out in time you get the Alert. If you take him out while he's on the radio, CP gets suspicious and goes into Caution mode. If you take him out straight away, you're home free. In Ground Zeroes, you either use Reflex mode, which is essentially a QTE prompt that all but lines up a headshot for you, or you turn it off and the entire base is alerted to your presence immediately. Like, literally before the guy who spotted you even has a chance to shout out, CP's yelling out "ALL FIRE TEAMS".

Specifics about the ending, yes, but I wouldn't want to share that anyway. That said, I won't hold back on how the ending made me feel and how I feel it fits the MGS lore.

Please do! There's been a lot of talk about how this recons certain aspects of the lore, and we'd all like to hear how it worked out.

Can you (if you can) elaborate on how wide-spread the story-content-in-review restrictions are for MGSV's reviews?

Asking because I'm concerned that upon reading the reviews, we may be randomly spoiled of bits & pieces of stuff completely unknown to us/not mentioned to players in trailers/previous communication, etc.

I went ahead and got Ground Zeroes on PC. How do I do any modding on it? I downloaded the GzsTools mod, as it seems necessary, but there aren't any directions. I have no idea where to put the files.

I just hope reviewers take their time and think about EVERYTHING this game has to offer, for example blood and dirt sticks on you until you wash it off

or the AI will adapt to the player's actions and tries to conter them, for example if you do a lot of headshots in that mission and you replay said mission later they will now wear helmets.

Also that the game runs at rock solid 60 fps. According to that spanish review the game didn't drop a single frame, no matter if there were huge explosions, or many people on screen the framerate was always constant. And that is mighty impressive and defintely deserves praise.

Just take your time and don't rush it, i wouldn't mind if there were lots of "Work in progress" reviews on sunday.

I find this to be such a great damn detail

Would like to know this aswell.

Seems to ring a bell but can't find the source...

The closest I've found was that enemies isolated in the wild would call for backup, but when you're in a 'base' as soon as an enemy was alerted it would be instant alarm again.

Can't find a source though, just going by what the post said. I guess I can kinda see how that would work, if you're in a busy area with a lot of soldiers a single shout would easily cause a base wide alert pretty quickly.

I do agree that the instant alert was my main issue with Ground Zeroes. My theory is that this was not brought up by the loud minority since the perception was that it made the game more difficult, and reflex mode is there to balance it out. Thing is, reflex mode itself was not enough at times when my view of the enemy was obstructed, or when the enemy was too far to line up a shot in time.

My dream scenario:

- Current AI setup
- MGS 2 / style alert system
- Reflex mode

When you get spotted, can you dive into cover to avoid an alert, or do you have to take the guy out?

Well, it depends on if you play with Reflex off or on in GZ. When an enemy can 'see' you, you get the little white marker, which I call the marker of worry. It's just that they see something out of the ordinary.

It can cause an enemy to come and investigate the area, for example, but if you move and hide and they find nothing, there's no problem. When it comes to actually having your cover blown, without reflex it's an instant alert & alarm, but if you have reflex on you get a short window to take the enemy out.

Thats what I remember from the small bit of time I've played GZ with reflex on, I normally play with it off.

I dunno why people want a MGS2 style alert system. It would make the game too easy just shooting the radio

From all of the gameplay demos the alert system in TPP isn't any different than GZ. If you watch E32014's demo you can see that as soon as BB is spotted by one guard they all start closing in on his location.

Hopefully TPP's much larger play-space will ease some of the issues with this though, allowing us to draw alerted guards away from the goals etc.

pretty sure the spoiler thread is stuck with translated Italian guidebook.gif and not a ton more debating pointless chicanery. Not much point asking those guys.

Just wait 12 hours for the reviews sheesh

Guards that are away from outposts have to radio in but guards within them just shout contact.

That's the last thing I read in regards to the matter during the preview event.

So have them go into Caution mode when they feel a bullet slam into the radio, problem solved. Nothing could make the game easier than Reflex Mode does. You can quite literally get S-Ranks by just sprinting through the levels, relying on Reflex Mode to trigger for sick headshots like you're playing a bullet time shooter.

I mean, pretty much anything would be better. If Reflex Mode didn't instantly line up a headshot for you, if it only worked on enemies you'd already tagged, if you had a limited number of Reflex Mode activations, anything. Instead, it's basically an "I win" button, and if you decide to turn it off you have to deal with the ultimate cardinal sin for a stealth game: an instant alert.

I get that all it should take in a base like Camp Omega is one soldier to shout, but that's not how it works. If you're sneaking up behind a dude and you accidentally nudge him before you put him in a CQC hold, that sets off the alert. He doesn't shout, he doesn't even finish his surprised stumble animation; CP just shouts "ALL FIRE TEAMS WE HAVE AN INTRUDER" instantly, and every single soldier on the base comes running. If someone thinks they see someone, they have to radio CP to talk about it; if they actually spot you, CP just knows about it through hivemind telepathy or something.

I think they should have the MGS2 alert system.

Trained troops retire to cover and call in on the radio. Others perhaps fire their guns into the air.

But I prefer the idea of an alert propagating through a base rather than how it is in Ground Zeroes ("ALL FIRETEAMS!").

Ah, we'll see how it all shakes down now, anyway.

Dont think I'm gonna watch reviews.... Too many potential spoilers, especially at Gametrailers.

Yeah, watching a Gametrailers review is tantamount to saying "Please spoil the game for me" :P

I'm not even going to read any written reviews. After so many reviewers nonchalantly gave away a great early twist in Batman Arkham Knight, I just have no faith in them not to spoil things. I'll just look at the scores, enjoy the GAF hypegasms/meltdowns and continue waiting impatiently for September 1st.
