Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Gametrailers also echoes IGN and EGMNow in regards to the story:

"What the Phantom Pain is trying to achieve is not necessarily what fans expect, and that's probably a good thing. It has a lot to say about political and ideological issues, things that are worth hearing, and that few other games would touch. Unfortunately the quality of the writing doesn't always properly support these grand sentiments. There are moments when dialogue sounds forced, or things are hurriedly explained away. There are times when the script leaps too quickly making it difficult to relate to, or enjoy.

Far worse though is that huge story threads are left wide open. It's as if The Phantom Pain has more to say, but get's abruptly cut off.
"

So GT also didnt get to the true ending. lol wtf.

You have to collect all XOF patches, all cassette tapes, complete all bonus objectives, unlock all trials (requires playing each mission a minimum of four times), and get an S rank on every mission on all difficulties.

Doing that over the hundred-something missions in TPP would be madness

Challenge accepted!

Not really. Studies have shown that the human brain is literally incapable of multitasking. You can play the audio log in the background while playing the game, but really you're only focusing on one or the other.

Yeah, maybe if your a dude. Women can multitask just fine.

I just don't like his voice, it doesn't sound right. Not that it's a huge problem and it certainly wouldn't ever stop me from playing.
He's doing his Jack Bauer voice, which is pretty much just his normal voice. It's far too recognizable to not be immersion breaking.

Sounds fucking terrible. I've long been a proponent of keeping the story in the game itself, I've criticized Halo endlessly about this and I'll criticize Metal Gear now.

The scores are superb, but there is an awful lot that I am reading that I really don't like.

I'm with you here. I want to believe the game is as good as the scores make it seem, but I also can't discount the possibility that these reviewers are in full "GOTTA SECURE KOJIMA-SAN'S LEGACY HNNNGGGG..." mode either. I think it's going to be a long wait before anything approaching objectivity is applied to this one.

Why would metal gear fans complain about cassette Tapes? They're just replay able codecs. MGS always put most they're story in codecs for cost saving reasons. The difference is they're more optional. So that's good right?

I didn't like it. It's decent, about the best praise I could muster for it. If MGS1 and MGS3 are 10s, this is like an 8/10, which is obviously a huge disappointment. But one thing is for sure, I am glad Kojima is never making another MGS game. Just a decade of disappointment since the incredible MGS3. A weak "finale" that feels like an unnecessary entry. A little too long, a little too tedious at times, and poorly paced.

Kind of surprised with the very positive reviews, but then maybe I shouldn't be. Open world games are kind of the thing nowadays. I'm expecting it to be a love/hate kind of game.

Whatever happened to balance. Just go from one extreme to the other.

I still hate MGS4 more though.

RIP Metal Gear.

There it is.

In any case I'm fine with lots of cassette tapes since they basically replace lots of codec convos.

That's good. I just hope they aren't PW-tier bosses with no personality or interesting characteristics.

You took an actual technical fact and turned it into a myth. Yes some studies show that the brain can only process information one way at a time, but same studies show that it can switch between sources within milliseconds, effectively allowing multitasking.

Because its a lifeless exposition dump.

Gametrailers: "Phantom Pain expects the player to dig in to get the most out of the story. Dozen and dozen of cassette tapes slowly acquired throughout the game fill in vital gaps. They're so important that it's hard getting the full picture without them."

Ugh. Not happy about this simply because that means I have to fetch all these audio tapes. Hopefully, they're not hidden because if it's such an important piece of the story, it would suck to miss them because they're hidden.

Going all in with cutscenes is too expensive to be practical, which is why the codec exists in the first place. Besides, audio only means Kiefer Sutherland can record lines from a studio instead of having to use the full performance capture gear, which I suspect is the reason why most of his dialogue seems to be there.

Ironically the excuse Kojima used for hiring Kiefer is that they needed to mocap his facial movements because he's a "real" actor.

What in the world are you talking about? Audio tape storytelling isn't a new innovative way to tell stories in video games and it's certainly not the evolution of how we should tell stories in games. And with this new boom in technology, there is absolutely a lot to be impressed with when it comes to cutscenes in games. Audio logs haven't been favored at all.

Then what rock have you been sleeping under for the past decade? Many games copied Bioshock's tapes.

I guess no one needs a radio in their car, then.

I'm impressed...

I'll not be buying immediately at release, but after a price drop I might even look out for anyone selling the steelbook at a decent price...

Greg Miller very much let's you see how his train of thought was throughout the game without giving out a spoiler*. Really great review, and he has definitely grown into a good style of discussion than some of this earlier videos on IGN.

* If the mere mentioning that a story thread gets wrapped up, don't watch this or any other review.

Bullshit. I won't write what the spoiler is in here, but its there.

Settle down, bud.

There's a difference between avoiding spoilers and out and out media blackout, don't want to know anything.

If it's the latter, don't read anything honestly.

The true ending stuff is, as far as I can tell, speculation from Jason. I don't really think you should treat it as confirmed.

Because its a lifeless exposition dump.

Lifeless? Have you listened to all the tapes in GZ? That stuff is intense.

Also, in Peace Walker there are several hours of tapes to listen to. There's a lot of good stuff in there. I'd expect the same from Phantom Pain.

Sparse story is the best thing I've heard about this game. If I'm sitting down to play a video game then my plan for the evening is to play a game, not watch a bad movie.

I've read all of the spoilers anyway but I wanted to warn others about the spoilers in that review - there's a big one in there.

Greg Miller confirmed it.

Edit: he didn't call it a "true" ending but said there's many more story threads to explore after the credits roll. So there's definitely more story resolution to come after that.
